Yea, I questioned the sales clerk if the total amount was correct. I was assured it was and since I have been known to be wrong a time or two I left with my goods. Well, I returned home and after looking over the receipt I was right. An item was not paid for. My initial reaction was "lucky day"! I returned to the store and showed the clerk the item and sales slip. I made my purchase with a "God bless". So, If ya see me heaven, I finally got one right...

If it was worth less than the cost of the gas it took to return it, I would have waited until the next time I returned to the store.

Ya' know, I really believe that Wal Mart plays this game in reverse.

The Wal Mart closest to me uses those "turnstile" rotary bagging counters. Got home once recently, and I realized I was missing several items. I called the store, got a managers name, and was told I could return to the store to retrieve my bag of items. I told him I wouldn't have time to return for a couple of days, and he said that would be okay.

When I returned two days later and went to the service desk, I was told that all items were returned to the shelves after the store closed the following day, because they have SO MANY bags left at the register turnstiles that there's not enough room at the service desk to hold them there longer than 1 business day.

I imagine that the turnstile bagging system is quite a nice profit center for Wal Mart. :sneaky2:

Kudos to you for doing the right thing.

I was in a casino last year, I put a one hundred dollar bill in a change maker, got back 6 twenty dollar bills. I brought it to the attention of a floor manager and had to argue with him to get him to understand the mistake. After 15-20 minutes explaining the issue to increasingly higher level managers, they checked the machine and some how figured out that the machine had been doing the miscount for several hours, to the tune of at least $1,000 over payments and possibly more. Incredibly for my time and patience, not to mention saving them further lose, they gave me a $10 (ten) dollar credit voucher. I just ripped it up and gave it back to the manager. I did not really want anything other than a thank you, but I was insulted by their gesture. As you said, the reward really is knowing that you did the right thing.

When you live 100 miles from town, and only go to town every 60 days or so, you are very careful. You count the items, you check all the bags on the turnstile. I even take the empty bags on the turnstile and tell them I live 100 miles away, and I have to haul everything in by snow machine. I get everything double bagged. And then grab a hand full of paper bags.

This is the real crack-up......The grocery store always says, "Would you like help with that out to your car"......SIR..???? As loud as I can say it I say, "What are you saying???????? Are you saying I am NOT man enough to pack these groceries".....??? I say it so loud that the whole store stops. All the checkers stop, everybody looks, and laughs. (It really is insane......here is this 14 year old bagger that weighs 84 pounds wet. And this indignant 197 pound 63 year old cowboy).:clap:

Several years back, my paralegal went to the local (4 branch) bank for me one morning to make deposits. I also asked him to cash one of my own checks for me.

He returned with my deposit slips and an envelope of cash. I took the cash out, and it seemed to be a bit more than I had written the check for. It was. It was about $3,000 more than I should have received.

I called the bank and they actually argued with me. The manager told me that I would have to call back a special number after 4:00 because they closed out the day at 3:00 and wouldn't verify my "claim" until at least 4:00.

I asked to be transferred to the president's office. Tim, the president, was a friend of mine. Amazing how quickly things changed after I spoke with him.

About 10 minutes later, the manager AND a vice president were in my office thanking me. It seems that the teller cashed my check AND the checks she had accepted from the previous customer, and put all the cash in my envelope. Thing that really made me laugh was that they accepted the cash from me in my office and then counted it twice in my presence. Like I was gonna' rip 'em off. :sneaky2:

Well I have to admit that back in the day I would not have returned it. But then again I was not the best person back then either. I have had that happen twice here recently and both times returned to the store to pay for the items. I even found 1k in a truck while test driving it a few years ago. I thought about keeping it but showed it to the dealer who contacted the previous owner. I ended up getting $200 out of the deal. I never really thought that doing the right thing would pay off but it has in many ways.

If it was walwart I'd a kept it and counted my blessings. If it were an individual or ma and pop store I'd do my best to get it back to em.

Good for you, Rebel. Karma is a wonderful thing and it does pay dividends.

Years ago, one of the guys I worked with had a repair call on a payphone. When he got to the booth there was an envelope with $300+ in it. He turned it in the police department. Later that day, an older lady stopped in at the PD to inquire if anyone had turned it in. She had made a phone call and inadvertently left the money in the phone booth. It was her entire social security money for the month.

You just never know who is on the other end or what impact not turning something like that in will have.

Not correcting a mistake costs us all in the long run. Not only do businesses lose to employee and customer theft but they have losses from mistakes as well. That all gets passed along in the price we pay for products.

As much as the walwarts around here overcharge folks thru scanner errors it more than makes up for their loss. Do they cut prices when at the end of the day their register slips show in the positive? NO!

Are they selling away American jobs to overseas? YES!

I don't think the largest corporation in the world needs our help, especially one that is selling out america, killing ma and pop shops, and ruining our economy.

I think rebel did the right thing, but if it was to a large corporation then it was done so in vain. Just my opinion.

I had the same mindset as you did not long ago. But saying it's ok to cheat because they cheat doesn't make it right. I was a thief, and Wal-Mart was my target. For 3 years I stole over 5K worth of crap from there and finally got caught. I got lucky and didn't serve time just had community service and probation. That incident almost kept me out of the Military. You can't be an honest person only part of the time. It's either all or nothing, you either have integrity all the time or not at all. Not picking on you and not talking down to you just stating my opinion. I haven't stole anything in 10 years now.... I have integrity and I thank the AF for that.

Well done Rebel! I don't know what all the fuss is with your supermarkets though, I've found the perfect method of food shopping. I do it online, if there are any missing items I just ring a freephone number and it's taken off my bill. Conversely if there was more than I ordered but was not charged I phone them. In all the time I've been doing this there have only been two mistakes, one in their favour, refunded, one in mine and they said I could keep the item FOC! Winners all round. I also get a free decent bottle of vino collapso every birthday!

Doug just to clarify, if I haven't already, I didn't say it was OK to steal or cheat. i don't steal or cheat. The fact of the matter is if a store didn't charge me for something I wouldn't even notice. When I go shopping I buy a lot of stuff and I go shopping rarely. I'm not going to look over every item and make sure I did or didn't get charged for it. If I notice something totally out of whack then I would look closer.

But, if Walwart didn't charge me for an item I would not go back and ask them to charge me. That is not cheating or stealing. It is a mistake on their part, not mine. I did not deceive them nor did I take an item from them. they gave the item to me. Honestly, if it is considered stealing I would still do it. I hate walfart and hope they undercharge every customer and eventually go belly up. NOT LIKELY!

If Hitler lost his memoirs would you return them? If Satan lost his pitchfork or golden fiddle would you return it? Think about it. Lets say you were in a survival situation and you knew that the people next to you were stealing from your garden. Stealing to the point that you could no longer feed your family. If you saw them returning from a hunt and they dropped some items on their way would you return them? I would not! I think that returning the item would be stupid and naive, not honest. There is a fine line between honesty and stupidity. IMO! If you knew someone would shoot you and take everything you have if they got the chance would you return their bullets if they lost em?

If a guy dropped his wallet i'd return it, money included and I have. If I find a wedding band I don't pawn it. I try to find the owner. I have a very expensive wedding band that a service guy left here when he did work. I contacted the owner and the service guy is AWOL. I'm not pawning the ring. But, I sure ain't giving it to the owner of the service shop. It ain't his. I'm on the verge of homelessness, but I ain't gonna sell this guy's ring. I could seriously use the cash, but it ain't right. I'm hopeful the guy will eventually turn up and claim it.

I just flat out hate Walwart. Plain and simple. i can't stand companies or people that make all their profit by robbing and stealing from babies mouths. I can't in good conscious buy from a company that makes it's living off the USA and contributes very little back. You are selling away your country if you buy from walfart. that's not an opinion. it's a fact.

Maybe evereyone here is holier than though, but I don't know one person in all my years that would go back and ask they be charged for the item. Not one person I know!

I'll also go on to say that a store is gonna charge the same price whether they get stole from or not. The problem is if they get stole from too much they will eventually go out of business from competition. Stores charge the most they can for a product based on the area they sell. It has nothing to do with the costs they incur. Some stores make more profit than others, but they all have to compete and that keeps them from raising their prices because of theft or any other expenses.

Maybe some folks haven't seen the damage these corporations do. There are zero mom and pop shops around here anymore. They've all went belly up and now work as cashiers and stockboys.

Bottom line is:

I shoulda just kept my opinions to myself. What the OP did was a good thing and I applaude you all for being so honest.:clap::innocent: All joking aside!
