What's the best advice you've ever gotten and how has it served you well?
The best advice IMO is the one you follow and try to pass on.
I've gotten a lot of good advice through the years but the one that influenced who I became as a person is the one I consider the most valuable.
How about you?

If thereis one single bit of good advice, it came from and NCO 30 or so years. He said, "act calm and panic later". Sounds simple, but has served me well for many years

When I was a little boy, my mom told me "You're going to learn how to take care of yourself, because one day, there may not be anyone else to do it."

"take the path of least risistance" had always stuck with me.
most times i remember it when im NOT doing it but it helps me to rethink things and move forward.
This is shinola. This is .....
I still have trouble with that on occasion.
Actually......Take the time to do the right thing right the first time. It will save you time in the long run.

My boss told me one time "never argue with an idiot, after a while people will get you mixed up". It worked really well once when he and I were discussing something, and I told him I couldn't discuss it with him any more, because of what he said about arguing with an idiot. He gave me dirty looks until the day he retired.

One advice that I've gotten as a kid and don't practice nearly as much as I should is, "Count to 10 before you respond."
So many times I wish I had, and so many times I was glad I did.
The forum brings it back to mind.

there's several others, but they escape me at the moment. anyway, those are the ones I keep at the front of my mind.

Best bits of advice?
Only rely on yourself, others will let you down.
Neither a borrower or lender be.(I've ignored this one a couple of times and "lost" some good stuff)
I you don't know it, learn it.

The second most useful piece of advise I've ever been given goes like this, "When Momma is happy, everybody is happy....When momma ain't happy, nobody is happy". How true :).

I don't know where you heard that, but my 8 years old son made the observation many years ago, and I have repeated it often, seems very astute and true for a young child.
My father told me the "Experience is the best teacher", usually after I did something really dumb, and it still echoes in my head when I'm gonna do something new/questionable.
The other piece of advice was from my mother, "Trust your instincts" (the little guy inside will know what to do.) Saved my behind many times.........

PLF's count as landings!! That's milspeak for Parachute Landing Fall. It's just on a DZ instead of an airfield!! Although there was this one time... ah never mind that's too long,and no one wants to hear about ALMOST getting run over by a Jet.
Nah, we dont' want to hear about close calls. Now, if it actually hit you and there was blood and stuff then we'll pull up a chair.
Yeah and one time at band camp...

Nope. Not going to tell any "war stories". I may allude to them, but ain't going to tell any. Too often even when they are true, people think you are BS-ing them so I ain't gonna' tell it. I will say that I know what a C-141B's wing looks like, as it passes over your head while laying on top of your parachute on the ground. No war story embellishments there.

I got that one too, well pretty close, my dad's version was a bit more "dirty" for a family forum. I didn't listen either. Now my little brother is in the same situation but I'm the one giving the advice. He isn't listening either.
Also my dad always said "don't let your meat loaf." :)

How about take-offs and landings? I have about 575 more of one than the other.
Sounds like me a time or three. One take off, Jumped, high wind came up. Landing # 1 top of a tree, OUCH!! Landing#2 barn roof, road rash!! landing#3 tall bushes, landings# 4,5,6. BOUNCE,BOUNCE, Drag.
Next day my bruises had bruises. :wheelchair::triage::censored:

OK now I'll reveal my best advice. "Advice is usually worth what you pay for it, and since most of it is Free......" I will listen to suggestions much more often than advice. Though many would consider them the same,to me they are different. A "suggestion" is something someone is telling you - "do with it what you will" Advice sometimes is a "sly" way of trying to tell you what to do
I will ask someone what they would do if they were in my situation. In this case I feel I am asking for an opinion.

I too make a distinction between suggestion and advice with a slightly different take from yours. It's all based on who it comes from, their motivation for offering it and under what circumstances.
For example, when my mother drummed into me that "it's better to work for free than sit around for free" she wasn't offering a suggestion but an advice on how to lead my life in general. It made a huge difference.
A suggestion seldom has that impact, at least for me.

This is the way I have lived my life for the last few years. Since I am retired twice and am working now as a consultant in a relatively small nitche, I no longer subscribe to the quote that TACMed shared,although I do recognize that folks at early parts of their career may have to:
"The toes you step on today, may be attached to the a** you have to kiss tomorrow".
If you do not go by this, you have to be willing to take the bumps :)
I've heard a few:
If you don't have anything good to say, keep your mouth shut.
Sometimes the smartest thing is to say nothing.
Don't show all your cards.
Whatever you do, don't go and join the US Marine Corps.
Needless to say..............I just don't follow directions.

Was sad and sick all week, but dragged myself to work. Barely. No exercise, no socializing. Sloth city.

Actually I'm bs'ing a bit but my grandmother on my mothers side married a fella named Dominic that was from sicily. I had lost my grandfather on my moms side when I was a toddler and Dominic was the only grandfather from that side I knew. Pay no attention to the quote though, Dominic was a natural born grandfather and was as gentle and kind as they come.
