do you think that quitting addictions is a good form of being prepared?

or do you think that there will be bigger things to worry about when the time comes?

i saw this same questioned posted on another site and was shocked at the answers.

i myself, quit smoking, drinking, caffeine, soda and changed my diet quite a bit.
i did all of it on the same day 24 days ago.

i gotta say, it was very hard.
i also have to say, its not so bad anymore and im starting to feel pretty darn good.

alot of the reason i did it was because i dont want to be a fat drunk that cant catch his breath if the world decides to go all road warrior on me.

id love to hear what you all think.

I think you have bigger fish to fry in a real disaster situation where everything goes to sh*t. At the time I smoked but in the miserable aftermath of rain and blood soaked Hurricaine Katrina I still managed to find dry smokes. Best.

I think being physically prepared is very important. My worst addiction is cigarettes and coffee. I drink on the weekends if someone brings liquor, but not at all during the week. Cigarettes... well, 12 hours without one and my wife won't even speak to me for fear that I will decapitate her with my teeth. Draggin a deer 3/4 mile out of the woods let me know that I REALLY need to quit smoking. It's hard for me to get going in the mornings without coffee, unless I have plenty of time to wake up. It's just my favorite way to start the day, but I could live without it. Sweet tea is another favorite thing of mine, but I could live without it. when the stinky stuff goes flying, I'll have no choice but to quit smoking.

I think when the time comes there will be more important things to worry about than cigarettes and coffee and though I'd rather not wait till last minute, I just can't seem to put them down.

congratulation on quitting smoking. very hard to do. You're a better man than I am ;)
I'm glad someone has the strength to change their lifestyle for whatever reason. It seems silly to destroy my health for the sake of something so unimportant, and I really must commend you for taking the very important steps. Now just work a little exercise into your routine and when the SHTF we'll be asking you to join our villages ;)

Well, if everyone is going to be looting walmart, I'm heading for the nearest hotel house cleaning cart and grabbing boxes of those coffee packets, lol... they pack well and will probably trade well.

It stands to reason that the fewer needs (addictions) that you have, the less you will need to store up on. This will give you more money and space for the essentials.

I think it's imperative you start there.

Yeah, you'll have bigger fish to fry WTSHTF so the last thing you want is to be distracted by sht that's not gonna do you any good and in fact can hurt you at a time you can least afford not to be in top condition.
And if nothing hits the fan, the worst that can happen is you'll be healthier and have more money in your pocket.

I enjoy drinking coffee, and my body will let me know when I don't have any. However, the times when I have given up coffee, I keep the headaches away by drinking plenty of water. If it ever came to it, I would drink my coffee stores until they were gone, and then do without. I'm glad I'm not a smoker.

Once upon a time, a young upstart rucksack toter used to line his ruck with Marlboro packs; that's how addicted he was. Quit when I retired (and gained 100 pounds). OK, maybe stopping running 3-5 miles daily may have contributed.

If you contemplate having to quit an addiction during a crisis, do it before. That is not the time to add to your burden. I'll save you the "you should quit now" lecture.

I use tobacco (pipe smoker) and drink coffee. Maintain a pretty good pace for 3 miles while jogging. Have had occassion to have to quit both (while in the boonies) for up to 30 days with almost no problems (just a bit more ornery than usual). If I notice a change in fitness, will probably quite. Until then will continue. I doubt that a permanent loss of both would have a significant impact.

Ah, smoking, I started that when I was in the army... Not quitting now. Though I should. Smokes are darn expensive. 4,20e per 20 smoke pack. L&M...

I don't smoke, drink alcohol, or coffee. But, man, sugar is hard to give up. I have given it up many times, so I am a pro at giving it up. At least I don't have any cravings when it isn't around, the problem is when it is.

But, yes, getting rid of any addiction will help in a survival situation or just life in general.

sahti is ancient finnish beer. Very treacherous stuff. Doesn't go in the head, but in the feet! And tastes like divine piss!

Nope, Pearl of the North ie. Finland. When you turn eighteen you are an adult (according the law) so, you can drink in bars and such and buy mild alcohol products and tobacco. At age of 21 you can also buy spirits.

Bladen i think you have made a realy good point here...i do sometimes enjoy a beer or two...or three...but a few months ago i quit smoking and i have to admit i do feel alot better and my wallet seems to be fatter..

in a real disaster situation. id stockpile ciggretts. Not only for myself, But ciggys will be worth there weight in gold once the tobacco factorys stop producing them

I smoked three packs of reds a day when i quit back in 2001. I had been smoking since I was 12 and finally just had it.

Now, I drink more than most do and any should. So, in a pinch I am going with my gewd Scottish blood and making my own. LOL

Actually, though, I think I have more mental addictions than physical addictions. I definitely did not have the problem quitting that so many others do.

Though in a pinch, what would be natural tobacco alternatives?

I know there are coffee replacements and obviously we can ferment, jack and distill our booze. But, what about smokes where there is no tobacco seed?

To be honest... If you're a true addict you just start preparing by growing your own tobacco, learning to make your own beer or wine, grow your own caffeine containing plants... and so on. Quit? What addict would EVER consider that option?!

If nothing else quitting some addictions will improve your health,which IMHO might make it easier to survive in a shtf situation. I quit smoking several months ago. It feels better. I'm not much of a coffee drinker except when camping. As a matter of fact i haven't had over 3-4 cups of coffee since jamboree last fall. My biggest vice is soft drinks then only a couple a day.

Of course quitting your addictions can help you prepare for a SHTF scenario by increasing your health and endurance. A healthy person will survive better than an unhealthy one (all other aspects being equal).
Here is something that clinched it for me.
One morning my wife and I were reading the paper during breakfast. She pointed out how damned expensive a carton of cigarettes had become even on sale (we quit over a decade ago). We joked about how much it must cost to be a smoker today. I grabbed a calculator, and used the sale price from the paper to run the figures. At today's prices, taking into account how much we used to smoke I totaled up how much money we didn't smoke (conservatively).

thats a good idea bladen. i think its always good to have health on your side in a survival situation even if its just being lost in the woods for a day or 2. im trying to chang some things too. some of which are things i always battle with like eating healthy, the fact that MSG can be labeled "natural flavors" dosnt help.

When I went to Airborne school at Benning one of the first things they told us (and one of the things I remember most) was: "Winners Never Quit, and Quitters Never Win!!". That is something that just makes it really really hard to try and quit smoking(The only vice I have left,and I'm keeping it for a bit longer). I could probably do without coffee and sugar after a short while... I have before.
For those that think it is as simple as "Growing your own", boy are you in for a rude awakening!! Having worked in Tobacco I can promise you this, There is a HUGE difference between the "Cured" product that is sent to the Tobacco Factories, and the stuff they actually sell. If you smoke 2 packs a day you will drop to 2 cigarettes a day, And then only when you absolutely have screwed your courage back up for another try!! I have tried it straight out of the barn,rolled and in a pipe. It is so much stronger, you wouldn't believe it!! All I can say is - Be prepared to cough!!

I am getting on the wagon....There is something in my cigarettes that just doesn't agree with me anymore...The no fire chemicals and well who knows what they are feeding us, the 30% tax to support our failing economy. I'll be rolling my own as needed...no patch or support group. I am just plum fed up with the tax....
