This will hopefully be a tool for those wanting to know which piece of gear they should consider. This may help someone with their time and resources instead of the trial and error method. One thing though with statistics be aware that the amount of data is very important, I think a few would change with more data. Even given the relatively small sample size I think you got the right info on alot of these.

I thought it might help the new person in putting together some equipment. For example, if I were new to survival I might start with a manual and from looking at this list I would probably go with the Army survival manual. For fire starting I would want a fire steel, lighter and matches. For water treatment: A Katadyn or MSR with chemical back-up. Boiling may be an option.

That's not a bad idea. Models will become obsolete. The Mora 780 for example is no longer made. Who knows, by next year Glock may no longer be made.

Not even close. I suggest you try things out for yourself because a good percentage of internet info and common perception is developed by people with no experience. Don't bet your life on internet info. Trying it out for yourself is the only way to know you can count on it when the time comes and to what extent you can rely on it. I'm still amazed that Native Dude was able to con so many on this forum.

Absolutely, and not just those starting out. I think most of us are always looking for something new or a better way but you have to use trial and error. I wish it was just trial and not error but I have been suckered by new products and info too many times. Trial and error is a part of your life if you are serious about survival. Sharing those experiences is what a forum should be about but like all forums you have to sift through a lot of crap to find it. It does provide you with options you may not have thought of just don't be surprized if it does not work out. There is a big difference between knowing something and believing something.

Iodine falls under chemical. Those listed are examples. Remember, too, that many are allergic to iodine and it makes the water taste like crap whereas filters do not.

Guys, i just came across this thread being new to the site. I know it is an old discussion.
However, in reviewing the list, and the discussion, I see that water purification has been discussed and boiling was talked about. But since "boiling" is not a piece of equipment, but a method, are there any thoughts as to equipment for that purpose. Obviously being at home and able to boil water in a pot would be the primary prospect. However, in a survival situation what choices are there for boiling water in the field? Assuming you have at least a fanny pack with survival gear, what would you want to have that would be small enough to fit within as well as light enough, but large enough to be worthwhile?

Hmmm. Good point. I'm not sure how that was overlooked. Since I carry a canteen and cup the cup would be first on my list. I suppose your question as to worthwhile is subjective but I could make that work pretty easily.

Also we should remember that the proposed "List" is also accompanied by many diuscussions of the "top three items", which often include the canteen/canteen cup along with some fire starting tool.

I have also noted as the years pass that we often refer to a "favorite method" or item and then wedo not actually use that item unless pressed to do so. Case in point, the ferro rod. Most of us have them and carry them in our gear but really start most of our fires with the trusty Bic lighter. The onbly time I use mine is when showing someone how it works.

As for boiling water, it is really seldom done unless in a disaster. Most of our woods work is planned and our filters and pills work very well for those purposes, espically in the volumes we need. One would be stopping to boil water at every creek crossing if they have only one bottle or canteen. It is much easier to pump the filter a few minutes or pop in a pill and keep moving.



And, as was stated, our opinions change over the course of a couple of years.

Interestingly. My filter clogged up so bad on a trip, posted here somewhere, but I never mentioned it in the AAR.

We boiled drinking water after that. We had taken with us a 5 gallon pot to boil crab in and stow gear in. We used it as a cistern off the shelter and to boil in afterwards.

Drank alot of coffee as the water tasted like the wood we were burning.


ETA- my point, lol.

Rat is dead on in his assessment that boiling is a genuine survival method now and not what most campers/hikers do regularly. We didn't actually boil it, just made it hot enough for long enough to not worry about it.

The "Billy" can is a pint to liter sized metal can type deal that, when packed with your foodstuffs, doesn't take much room at all and is useful as all heck. Tent cistern, cooking, transporting fire, bailing, etc.

After a couple days in the cold and wet, a bowl of hot water to wash your hands and face in is absolutely wonderful.

There are needle and threads in the metal container.
There are toilet paper and a rain cover at the left side. The stuff in the middle of the picture is clear. At the right side you can see my Hungarian military compass \o/, it has a great signalling mirror part, and there is my first aid kit. That's very simple kit for my daily needs. And I have some safety matches as well.

I also added a multi-use item to my pack.

P.S. I have always used my own priority list (which turns out to be very similar to "The Rule Of Threes") to determine what I have with me at all times. I always have

1. A rudimentary first aid kit (generally smaller than my wallet, btw, though capable of handling more than a simple cut/abrasion)

2. A cutting edge and some form of firestarter (lighter, etc.)

3. A means of collecting, purifying, holding and drinking water.

I am new to the forum I am really enjoying it so far lots of great stuff. I would add to this topic .I recently renewed my concealed to carry here in the great state of texas and someone asked which gun is the best to carry for self defense. the instructor answered the gun you feel the most confident and comfortable with. The equipmeant you carry. I do a lot of carpentry work and I swing a 22oz. hammer all day lots of people that would be to much hammer. they might want to drop down to a 16oz. I guess i am just saying wht someone else has allready said but you need to try severl things compare there differences and acces your proficincie with different items

Just curious, but would it be feasible to assemble a "suit" like a hazmat suit using emergency blanket for interior lining and rain poncho material on the external, to serve in cooler climates? I've been somewhat thoughtful towards it and might even try to make something like that. obviously not using solely a sewing kit heh..

You can purchase tyvek coveralls for $6 bucks each. All white so it blends in with snow. You could slip it on over your clothes. I don't know how rugged they are however.

Just keep in mind that if you do use Tyvek suits (I use them a lot for work) that they do not breath at all. Be mindful of sweating.

I am new here to this forum, but not to forums in general or these types of topics. I perused this list and the thread and I'd like to offer some alternative items that I think all should have in their BOB/backpack:
- The book 'Where There is no Doctor'.
- The book 'Where There is no Dentist'.
- 'Hawke's Green Beret Survival Manual' and/or 'Hawke's Special Forces Survival Handbook'.

and in my opinion, two largest overlooked 'kits':

- a dental/oral hygiene daily care and first aid kit for the mouth. This is by far one of the most overlooked preps. Look at how many people you know that do not take care of their mouth and teeth now. Few understand the host of fatal events that can occur because of a simple impacted tooth and/or cavity.
- Laxatives and diarrhea management items. Long term hiking, bushcrafting, survival scenarios has the potential to wreak havoc on the digestive system. We all
know this. Build a kit that contains fiber gummies, Exlax, mineral oil, Ducolax, and the like. A severe bout of constipation can cause a fatality in many ways. The same for a bout of diarrhea. Diarrhea in the wild can cause dehydration, not to mention deplete your stores of fresh/available of H2O. In your kit throw in anti-diarrhea agents such as Kaopectate Multi Symptom Relief Tablets, available at any Rx store OTC.

To me, I view the books not so much for myself, but for someone that may stumble across me & find me weak and possibly dying. I can guide them to certain chapters that I think are applicable for the condition they find me in.

The Dental & Digestive Health kit is as important to me as my water purification/gathering methods and shelter skills. I don't know about you, but when I'm 'bound' up, I'm miserable and unproductive. The same when I am suffering the 'runs'. At home we're relatively safe with available resources, in the wild tho', either condition can be fatal.

#2: I agree 100%! In my opinion, taking very good care of your mouth and eyes are extremely important. Your eyes are kind of obvious, but your mouth is so crucial when surviving in the wilderness. Imagine you are taking a bite out of this mornings game and you crack a tooth on the bone... WHAT NOW? You are basically screwed unless you are traveling with a dentist or know a lot about oral/tooth reconstruction haha.

I appreciate the reply. I don't want to be argumentative; I'm here to learn. But of the ones I have access to to weigh:

Ruger Single Six, .22, 5 ½” – 33 oz, 6 rounds
Ruger Mark I, .22 4" – 34 oz, 9+1 rounds
Ruger Blackhawk .357 Mag, 4 5”8” – 40 oz, 6 rounds
AVERAGE - 35.7 oz
1911A1 45ACP, 5” – 38.4 oz, 7+1 rounds

That's with magazine but no ammo. I'm using the Mark I to stand in for the Mark III and the SA Blackhawk to stand in for the DA Redhawk in the survey.

Either .22 LR beats either of the heavier calibers by 4 or 5 ounces. Blackhark is marginally heavier than the 1911.

I would understand arguments that the revolver is simpler with less to break or need adjustment than a semi. Likewise one can argue that there is a version of the Ruger revolvers that comes with two cylinders for ammo versatility - .22LR and .22Mag and for 9mm/.38/.357.

I'm curious what reason the people that rejected the 1911 had for that choice.

My go to are similar to the list as well....but I don't consider the 1911 .45 an ideal foraging and woods self protection firearm.
My main reason for the list.......
If strictly for self protection, 2 legged.... a auto loader pistol could be .9mm, 40 mm, .45 but would opted for a double stack.

I gonna say my choices are not all weight related....but more to versatility.
Your mileage may vary, and your choices are arrived at, for your reasons....no problem with that.

The is no wrong answer, and this is a discussion, not an argument...so your opinion is as good as any one else's.

I carry a double stack .45 when in the woods. It's an XD 45 Service model. It's protection only. If I had to carry something for foraging it would be my Single Six with the WMR cylinder. Everyone has their own comfort level.

Sometimes what applies is the fact that a small person can wield a small sword as effectively as a big person wielding a heavier sword...or...a big person can maneuver a big sword as fast and effectively as the small person wields his lighter sword.

But this is only a fancy metaphor, and carries only so far when discussing firearms. When it comes to handguns...even a small person might want a heavy one with a big punch, it's weight keeping it steady and reducing the kick, but the small person still needing to learn how to handle the big thing, and you get a big punch which won't ricochet off of windshields and will take care of business. To an extent, it's the big person who can make a lighter handgun that still punches hard, work.

Disclosure: I have some, but little personal experience with firearms and knowledge of particular models. So I'm sure that I'm talking out of my rear a little. (Hehe, but I can teach you how to sword fight very effectively.)

For one thing that list is a couple of years old and some of us have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century since our votes were taken.

The firearms list is like the knife list, just because something did not show up does not mean it was not there.

On any given day or month the average age of the members, their personal preferences and what they could afford at the moment might have influenced the count. The younger the member average the more 9mm shooters are going to be in the mix, and the more newbies there are the more .22s.

I am an old coot, and I have a rash of 1911 pistols, couple of 45acp revolvers that are older than anyone on this forum, but in 2013 I made the mistake of asking to be introduced to a Taurus 24/7 OSS .45 acp and realized that the designers of that pistol had cured every gripe I had ever had with the 1911 design and had given me as much magazine capacity as a Browning HP. It came home with me and the 1911 pistols are only fired as match and range toys now and seldom ever carried.

That being said I normally carry a 38/357 revolver as my woods/foraging gun, but I have been known to tote a .44 magnum on occasion and my daily carry gun is a 380 in summer and a 9mm in winter, if I am not carrying a .38 snub-nose at that moment.

That should clear things up but if not the fact remains that we don't hold your favorite carry gun against you no matter what it is. Randy T might show up with a .455 bulldog and we don't want to hurt his feelings, he's a good guy and all.
