View Full Version : What are you preparing for?

I'm fairly new to this site, so forgive me if this is on here alright.
I was curious as to what things or events are you preparing for?
My concerns where I live and work are:
1. Power Outage
2. Heavy snowfall
3. Flooding - (not my home but nearby where stores and services are located)
4. Civil Unrest due to economic situations

Natural disasters effecting food, electricity. Got those covered. OK on water, home defense. Should be OK on most anything.

For me it started with preparations for natural disasters. While in the Navy I helped clean up after Typhoon Pamela hit Guam, saw the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, and had the eruption of Mt. St. Helens totally mess up an outing to Spirit Lake. Since I live in an area that is prone to weather extremes I prepared for two scenarios. Bug In (preferred) and Bug Out. The potential level of devastation will be the determining factor in what I do. Plans include securing the homestead, immediate needs and long term needs. As you point out, depending on someone or something for your survival may be disastrous.
Since I live near 3 military bases, NFL venue and large tourist destination I also plan for human initiated disasters. Food and supplies to last for a minimum of 3 to 6 months. The ability to defend my family.
My plan is constantly evolving. One of the reasons I’m here.

We're always planning for winter...which means getting absolutely everything we need in by the end of summer. Enough of everything to last us until the following June, in case the lakes don't freeze safely. And we did a bad job of it this summer: there is only about 3 tablespoon full of dried onions left and not enough pasta either, it looks like :-( the pasta can be stretched but the onions...?

We're always planning for winter...
I know what you mean. I'm going to have to break out the long pants in another month or so.
Winnie
10-17-2009, 05:18 PM
I originally planned for extremes of weather, but since being here I've adjusted my original plan and it's now more flexible. I could cope with about 3 months of bugging in due to pretty much anything. Bug out is not my preferred plan but I do have a BOB and that could see me and Winnie jnr through 3 days.
When funds permit I add to my preps little by little. This does have advantages, because it really focuses your mind on what you need rather than want. Essentials first.

We try to prep for lots of things. The main hazards here are like last winter storms that cause power outages, chemical disasters ( GE chemical plant 15 miles away). Flooding ohio river less than 1 mile away. Economic collapse. ( were lossing another 1200 jobs due to whirlpool plant closing in area, plus about another 1000 in support jobs as well).
After that playing it by ear, because for all the preps we've made and all the gear we own.( and we have a bunch) There's no way to prep for every situation.
Natural or man made disasters
1. War, and after getting our buts kicked, armed resistance, staying hidden. (army reserve speaking here)
2. Injuring myself when hunting/working in forest, how to keep myself alive and out of trouble.
3. Attack of brain eating zombies. (I think this is going to happen next.)

Preparing? Who's preparing? I guess I didn't get that memo. I am preparing for the toughest situation ever.....having my mother in law coming to stay with me for a week. Having never met her before and having a very pregnant wife to top it off. Now that is a scary situation. :(
Oh and I suppose I am preparing for war, famine, drought, all natural disasters....all the normal stuff. Not zombies though....that's just rediculous but if it were to happen I have many guns and lots of ammo.

economic collapse
governmental collapse / martial law
any other reason for me to bug out, like war
I'm preparing for supper and a good night's sleep right now because I just put in three and a half extra hours at work.
but in my life, I think I'm pretty much prepared for the things I might have to worry about.
If I have to bug out, I have the necessary gear and the truck ready to go
Winter storms are a biggy here, but I'm insulated against them and have a pretty good stockpile in the house if I couldn't get out for an extended time
If the economy collapses it's ok because I'm already broke
Martial law wouldn't make Canada much different than it already is, but if they ever go full blown with it again and I think I have to worry about being on someone's roundup list, that's a bugging out scenario (see above!)

All of us, no matter where we live in the world have to contend with natures fury at one time of the year or another. Some of us live where nature isnn't on a time table (earthquakes). So we have to be ready year round for that inevitability along with seasonal climate disasters or a combination of these. Of course then there are the man-made disaster scenarios which can happen at any time as well. So what am I preparing for???? everything that could happen to me here and then some!

My Hero! Sarge, you're the man!!
Prepare for work every morning, dealing with the thugs and idiots of Cincinnati, as a cop I stay prepared when at work. Off duty I don't really prepare because I try to be ready for whatever comes at me and the family, got a Bug out bag, emergency kit in the cars, food storage for disasters, ammo for the guns, clothing, all that kit I may need. But I don't live where it floods or where earthquakes hit, we get tornado's every once in great while but how do prepare for that, basement is full of my kit already so I guess I am prepared for that.
Keeping up on my woodsmen skills is being prepared, so I guess I'm good.
Your mind is the best defense against anything that is thrown in your path, stay calm and think your situation thru and all will be okay.
Never really thought about it, civil unrest means I get called into work to help quell the problem soooooo, hmmm I dunno.

You know what, that is absolutely right. T minus 24 days and counting until the disaster is here. Might have to just head out into the wilderness and see if I can make it. All I need is a metal cup, good knife and fire starters right....how hard could it be?

LOL Doug, You can get through any situation as long as you know when it will end.
We prep mostly for economic collase and natural disasters. We had an ice strom last year that left many without power for nearly a month.
The economy is always fragile. Doesn't take much to crash it. If nothing bad ever happens we at least saved money by buying in bulk and taking advantage of sales. Food never gets cheaper...

Born2Late - I understand that this is a big problem. I also understand that it does not get the attention it deserves in the media (just as many other outrages against humanity receive little attention). I think however, that for you to use a whiite supremist and former grand wizard of the kkk to illustrate your point does nothing more than cause many to continue to ignore the problem.

AHHHHHHH!!!! Zombies!!!!:jango:
I'm preparing for food prices to go WAY too high...and the already hungry getting hungrier. I'm also preparing for the inevitable panic/desperation to set in...and crime going up because of it. :(
If OIL goes up...and I'm certain it will skyrocket because of the issue in the gulf...I know I'm screwed. I almost went broke the year before last with that oil hike. Heating my house was impossible on my budget. Add in food costs and we are going to enter into a very bad winter in my area.
