Let me first say that I was raised in rural America, where any violence between people is generally provoked. When I moved into the heart of Wichita (obviously not an extremely large city itself) I became intensely paranoid, especially when traveling the less-than-appealing parts of town. I always expected that any unprovoked aggression towards myself would occur in the "hood". This was not what happened approximately 1 hour ago.
This all started when I went back home after work today to visit the family about 30 miles from where I now reside in Wichita. I was on my way back on an open stretch of highway between two small towns right before you get to the city. Suddenly a beat-up Geo Prizm races up next to me in the other lane with three rough looking characters hanging out the window flipping me the bird and yelling obscenities. At first I assumed it was a bunch of high school students being obnoxious and, being able to relate to that not so distant past, I chose to ignore it. That was until they came close to me again and repeated the action. This time a can of something came flying at my car. At this point I am angry. They then receive a bird from me and I drop my slightly less crappy cavalier all the way to 3rd and speed away. This is when they follow me. Then we hit a stoplight. Two guys jump out of the car. This is when I realize that my own hard headedness doesn't always benefit me. These aren't wimpy little kids. They are grown. One is quite muscular. More importantly there is more than one. I rolled down the window and asked them "What the *choose a strong obscenity* are you doing!??" The only response I get is "You are *obscenity*ed now." I then simply drive off. I thought they had stopped and at this point I am scrambling to get ahold of someone and ask if they know anything. Then suddenly, like a sign from God I see one of my good friends from high school at an intersection (I am in town by this point). I pull into one of the lanes of a double turn lane next to him and tell him to follow me to the grocery store. While waiting for that light to change, I look in my mirror and once again the crappy geo is sitting behind me. A cup of what I assume is tobacco spit then showers my car. Now my buddy realizes that something is up. We both speed to the store parking lot, the geo not far behind. We both get out and my friend produces an axe handle from under his seat. I dug a jack handle out of my trunk. Then these thugs pull up about 50 yards from us, get out, and pull their shirts off in a grand show of pure moron. At this point I am beyond nervous. I am very enraged and running on pure adrenaline. I am ready to whack that muscular swine right across the dome. Two of them approached us and talked down to us for using a weapon (does chivalry matter when you are attacked for no reason?) Then the one that was targeting me says "You better be ready to use that." My friend, being the talker he is, tried to be diplomatic. It wasn't working but it did distract them long enough for some ambulance sirens to start. They of course thought they were police sirens and fled the scene, telling me to "watch my ***". These guys were clearly wannabe skinheads bent on proving something. They were all shaved and wearing the typical skinhead garb. I am 5'8" and 175 and definitely not a pushover myself but I think it was my enormously built 6'1" buddy who made them slow down a little bit. If I hadn't been lucky enough to come across him, I probably would have been the next lunchmeat for Hitler's Youth.
I have a suspicion that this may have been some sort of gang initiation. I don't know much about skinhead activity in the Wichita area, but I want to investigate now.
I am now going to be packing heat all the time instead of my usual 95% of the time.

Wow! I'm glad you managed to get out of the situation unscathed. I worry about safety for myself and my son all the time, though we also live in a smallish town. Gang activity (and violence in general) is on the rise everywhere, and they start younger and younger...

Glad things worked out for you. I woudl recommend dialing 911 on your cell. Don't stop until you get to a crowded area. If you know where a fire station is, or the police station - drive there. I would still file a police report. Threats, insults and bravado aside, throwing objects at moving vehicles is a felony in many places. Like you said - carrying for protection is a good idea - avoiding it is best - make sure you are confident in your training.

Avoidance is always the best defense. Second best is being able to extricate yourself from the situation. At the moment the stupid stuff started you should have just called 911 and reported it. Escalating the situation by retaliating generally only makes the situation worse. You're very lucky that when you produced the axe handle and tire iron that they didn't produce handguns. Things could have gone a lot differently.

How will "packing iron" remedy the situation? Once you produce a handgun you escalate the situation, sometimes out of control. I agree you have the right to protect yourself when all else fails but there are other things you can do in advance of drawing your weapon. I agree with Crash. I would still report the incident. They may have done similar to other drivers.

Only happened to me once, driving home from work. Don't think I was going fast enough for a guy on a rural road so I got the high beams & bumper ride for around 15 miles. Didn't want the idiot to follow me home so I pulled in front of a carry out where I knew the owner and knew he always was armed. Man stopped, got out and with his lug wrench came toward me. I just rolled down the window and told him I had worked 14hrs, tired and if he came closer I would kill him. We looked at each other, I won and he drove away. In large cities or rural areas awareness is #1. LEOs are few and far between. Most rural areas around me, no cell service. If you know someone or not pull into a driveway and lay on the horn. If all else fails I carry a 45, knife & walking stick. A cane or stick is overlooked and I could probably still take out a couple, no problem but if necessary guess I would shoot one or two. Crash is more "politically correct", where you live, who you know, age etc all are a factor and you're the only one that can save your rear end, never depend on anyone but yourself.

A High School classmate of mine (yes 35 plus years ago)shared a similiar story with me at our last reunion. He is a New York State Trooper, Zone Sgt. He was driving a rural road in upstate NY in uniform, in a marked State Police vehicle around dusk. He was tailgated and "high beamed" by a vehicle for 10 or so miles. Finally the Trooper pulled over on a wide stretch of road. The trailing vehicle driver pulled up behind him, got out of his vehicle with a tire iron (now mind you this is a fully marked police vehicle) and a he approached the police vehicle, my classmate got out fully resplendent in his NYSP finery and a fist full of 12 guage shotgun. At that point it dawned on the miscreant that he had made an error in judgement. The arrest sheet went on for several pages, including a pencil note to the justice of the Peace that this guy was guilty of stupidity in the first degree

PS : It should be noted that there has been a spate of this type of Police Baiting by gang members. SO even they are not immune. Be careful all

Make a Police report. If this happens again, call 911 on your cell if you can. Do not get out of your car and drive straight to a police station. Packing "HIGH CAPACITY" felon repellant will definately NOT hurt anything except the bad guy. I of course recommend a Glock. It has been saving a$$es around the world in 37 plus countries for nearly three decades. No other pistol can come close to that claim. It has NEVER needed "upgrades" or "enhancements". Very hard to argue with that record. IMO nothing is even in it's league for out the box reliability, durability, low weight, high capacity, ease of maintainance, corrosion resistance, simplicity of parts, and ease of training. Get good training for whatever weapon you choose. I cannot stress this enough. Use it only as a last resort in preservation of life and limb. It is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. This goes for ammo capacity too. I have run into past felony arrestees before while in the street with my family and sometimes it is not a joyful reunion. Remember, bad guys and wolves run in packs so high capacity is a good thing any day. "You won't need all those bullets" is a nice novelty of a thought. Don't believe it for a second. Think about the "need and not have" scenario. "Most firearm conflicts are over in under 3 shots fired". Well, I don't see anyone carrying only 3 bullets in their weapons because "chances are that is all you will need", right? I carry 24/7 and it has gotten my a$$ out of a pinch a time or two (Way too much to go into here). All resulted in a lengthened rap sheets for the sh*t bags. I applaud and encourage you to take advantage of the 2nd Ammendment. Be safe, Brother.

But I do agree with your basic premise. I say get good at what you carry (even if you insist on a Glock:)). No one has ever been hurt by a loud noise (a miss). It is always better to hit with a .22 than miss with a howitzer (no, I am not advocating a .22 as a carry weapon). and if you do choose to "carry" be a responsible citizen.

I realize now that I should have gone directly to the police station. However, at the time I was running on adrenaline and it got to a fight or flight situation. My own instinctive tendency is to take a Dirty Harry type stance towards threats from thugs and miscreants. This will probably cause my downfall some day.

Pal, Here we go again. This is not to argue but to state the facts. The 1911 has had constant upgrades and enhancements since it's inception. The last thirty years it has udergone everything from lowered and flared ejection ports, enlarged mag wells, tightend bushings, "match grade barrels" (whatever the hell that is supposed to be), Lightened triggers, external safety changes, mag release changes, internal and external extractors, fireing pin safety changes, fixed and swing links, even a polymer frame job or two and they are still "working" on it. The 1911 is hardly the same pistol you went through Basic Training with and for good reason. It needed changes to keep up. It has been being screwed around with and "enhanced" (aka redesigned) because let's face it... It needed to be enhanced and upgraded to get to a level of usability that is seen in today's 1911's and other more modern pistols. If it was so good 30 yrs ago or 100 yrs ago for that matter why has it been "changed up" so much. Glock, my friend, has never needed those changes. Glock's level of out the box performance has been recognized by 37 plus countries. Way more acceptance than we can say for our beloved 1911 which has been a constant perversion of it's original form. It is a great gun in it's own right but time has not been good to it's initial design and alot of changes had to be put in place for it to keep up with other designs. Lay a G.I. model out next to an upscale Kimber or Bauer and the changes are obvious. IMO Glocks do everything 1911's do and do it better my friend. Glock is the pistol 1911's try in vein to keep up with. Name just one thing a 1911 can do that a Glock can't do. Hmmm....short list huh? Hmmmm.....non existant list huh? Glock is flat out better in every category of combat performance. The 1911 can in no way endure the torture tests and military trials given to the Glock. Want proof. In truth the XD is a fine weapon and I do Like it, but Glock does not need to be flattered by immitation. The XD has not earned it's stripes in combat yet. Can't speak for the other countries, but the U.S.A. military choice was and is the 1911, the political choice to replace it was the Berreta. I was at the trials, witnessed and documented the political games. Professionals in the military test unts chose the 1911 . That is an absolute fact, take it to the bank and gather interest. Wrong debate. You said that the 1911 has not been enhanced or upgraded in 30 yrs. or was it 100 years. No matter. Sorry, Brother but that is FALSE! The 1911 was used as a performance baseline in the military trials. I guess "politics" made the SIG beat out the 1911 too in the trials. I don't think so....Just flat out better designs. If you were there, which I do not doubt, I'm sure you saw how well the Sig did over the 1911's recorded stats. Glocks were not tested in the trials so that point is moot. It does not have an external safety/decock or exposed hammer as required by the powers that be. "Politics" has never had any bearing on the Glocks superior performance. Politics did come into play between the two winners over the 1911's recorded stats...the Sig and Beretta. A last minute price drop caused the DOD's choice to swing to Beretta even though the Sig did slightly better. The numbers can not lie and at least two other pistols did better than the 1911's recorded stats in the trials. That is the facts no matter what the upper military brass may have wanted to happen. Just straightening out the confusion of the original debate without side stepping and clouding. 1911's have been constantly changed over the years and Glocks have not. Had the Glock been allowed in the trials I am sure our soldiers would be carrying polymer due to performance stats and price, IMO. Stay safe.

Back on the original topic I have been fairly lucky. Never had any road rage or gang stuff get that out of hand before. I did have three "kids" well they were 18 and 19 come to my house wanting to kick my a$$. Never did find out what that was all about. But I walked out with my 9mm Beretta, in my boxers, and said "I'm gonna shoot the two of you in the knees then kick your little a$$," pointing to the third one. They left, and needless to say after that most everyone in my small town thought I was a crazy SOB. I heard that about a month ago those three got busted for making Meth and are now serving time. Man isn't life great, couldn't have happened to a better trio. :)

Once years ago when I was a private investigatpr in New York I was looking for a witness in a sleasy bar and someone told me that the bartender had just paid a black gang to beat me up. I went outside to my car and they followed me. I don't like to carry gun in a bar but I had a Smith and Wesson 9 mm under the seat. I get to the car and they were almost up on me and they didn't know I knew they were there. I reached under the seat and pulled out the weapon and pointed it at them and I said, "Did any of you guys ever hear of Bernard Goetz?" They went back inside the bar and later I heard they gave bartender hisa money back and said forget it. I never heard any more from these guys.
Seriously I do not think this was a gang initiation. Just some half-wits with nothing better to do. Like people say try to avoid them but if this is a small town that may be hard to do. So me personally I would carry the weapon and make sure I knew how to use it. Eventually the morons will get the idea you are not an easy mark or get bored and find someone else to bother.
