so a knock on the door this afternoon brought one of the members of the naturalist society asking me to do a presentation on edible plants, says he heard i know a bit about them.
heres the problem, i know a bit about plants no problem, have no problem taking you out in the bush and showing a few things, but a presentation to a group of old timers who know alot about the bush and do it in a library setting, we all know i don't know crap about computers so a power point is out of the question
also will be doing this in february or march since i am commited to the survival course at the college every tuesday for the next 3 months.
so how do i do a presentation about plants in the middle of winter at a library to a group who knows nature

what say ye.

Well I know you may be a little computer slow, but a powerpoint is very simple. I'm sure you have or can obtain pictures so that would be your best bet. I could even make a powerpoint for you if you can compile all the plant species you want to include. I have done this for weed control and insect identification for the military.

I could send you a powerpoint presentation that you could modify. Might help you navigate it? It won't have anything to do with plants it really isn't that hard I just learned by trial and error and it goes along pretty easy.

Thought you said naturist at first(note to self read more carefully)

How about a slide show, followed by a discussion on the various uses of each plant?
You could also add in pictures of lookee likee's that aren't edible.

...what the others said. I would also bring some dried stuff along and maybe if you have a favourite tea mix or whatever, brew some up during the presentation for the folks there. Ask them what they collect and make it maybe more interactive. Also if you have any other plant stuff you use for firestarting or making rope or whatever, bring it along. Say that's what you do with it and how you do it and again ask for their input.
Talk about what animals eat which plants and what other plants can be expected in the neighbourhood of plant x.
I like interactive stuff. Just sitting there and looking at slides and listening to you drone on and on about plants wouldn't be so much fun, I think. Unless you're really good to look at of course!

(And CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is so totally awesome that you're really getting into it!! I'm really happy for you :-) )

Maybe you could do as I did. Find some young whipper snapper to show you what you need to know. Then you only need learn right away what is needed for this presentation, then work on learning all that is available in power point later. quick easy way for us more "seasoned" folks to break the technology barrier.

And always keep a copy of what you do some where safe (on a CD etc). You may need it in the future and you are building your own library

Well I am totally surprised that absolutely no one suggested the old school approach!!! Forget the Computer stuff, and get busy...Real busy!! Get out and collect some specimens and press them until they are dry. Then take some CLEAR contact paper and perhaps a pic of the plant as it is alive in it's natural surrounding environment.Use whatever background paper that shows off the specimen the best!! tape paste or glue the pic in place, position the specimen to it's best advantage and very carefully cover with contact paper!! Make sure to seal the dry plant on both sides with contact paper to totally preserve it. Once you have this done you have something that is better than any computer presentation as it can be done anywhere!! Even a thousand miles from any electrical source. It also helps to see an actual specimen so you understand the proportion of it all. You can use it over and over and even pass them around the class so it makes it more personal for every one attending!! Good LUCK WE!! I'm Rooting for ya' brother!!

Something I just remembered is to include a data card with each specimen. All the usual info. Name: Common and Scientific, habitat, uses, cautions etc. You get the idea. Even if you go with a more modern approach I would still suggest using some of these, and you might even be getting a jump on those college classes, as they used to require students to do this when I was in school - back in the dark ages.

If you are doing it at the library you may ask if they have an aide that can assist you. Here at our local library we do have. They assist in getting meeting rooms set up, make sure that any materials needed are there. That kind of thing. Just another idea.........?

tell them about the plants as you know them, trust that they know what to make of it, and maybe be open to the possibility that they can give you some academic insight to add to your own knowledge while you are at it.

power-point is easy, though a photo slide-show would work just as well. just have the photos ready in one directory and when you're ready, click preview on the first one. when you're ready to move on to the next, just press the right arrow key to advance to the next photo.

if you know somebody else who knows how to put together a presntation, you could ask them to put it together for you. it wouldn't take long, and they might not mind.

hopefully i don't look good to a bunch of old timers

Maybe you could do as I did. Find some young whipper snapper to show you what you need to know.

i do have a good freind that has done a presentation on global warming there already and he is computer savy, soo.

power point do you need a laptop for that?i do really like the idea of bring some bush tea, had kind of mulled that over also maybe something that is fresh available in the late winter.

i like mixing the two worlds hands on and computer. maybe work up some handouts of what i will be covering, same as i would if i was teaching out in the bush. good ideas folks thatnks

The laptop makes it easier, if the library has some sort of projector that you can plug into. If they don't just print your presentation and hand it out. A the mixture of presentations, probably will keep everyones attention on your subject. Good luck

WE - First, if you don't have the time or are not comfortable with it, then don't do it. It's okay to say no once in a while. If you do agree to the presentation then...

How long is the presentation supposed to be? That will go a long way in determining what you need to present in terms of number of plants and/or how long you can talk on each one.

How many will be present? Or, what's the maximum capacity of the room. That can impact any handouts that you might take to the preso and how personal you can get with your audience. Obviously, the smaller the better.

Stick with what you know. You can do an intro about YOU and how you became interested in wild edibles. Talk about who you trained with and about your library collection. Talk about your ongoing training - if you still train with Allen, the class you are taking, the work you do with the injured animals - you can even talk BRIEFLY about Norm and your new kid. That establishes your credibility with the audience. Otherwise, you're just another guy.

Talk about drawing plants and how that helped you. Pass out some drawings so folks can see what you did and what you focused on. It doesn't have to be purdy but it will let them understand how you have to focus on all aspects of the plant.

Talk a bit about the pro's and con's of using reference books. You KNOW that stuff hands down. Remind them to read through the abbreviations, for example. Then offer up some examples of books you think are good and have them on hand to show and let folks flip through them if you like.

Then, move into the actual plants. Whether you use some preso or pressed plants really doesn't matter. Do what you know, other wise Murphy will give you a visit and then you'll be stuck. If you don't know Powerpoint, don't use it. Keep It Simple. Do you have a 35mm slide projector. Old school but it works. How about an overhead projector? I'll bet the library has one you can use. You can print photos on transparent printer paper then just show them on the overhead. If you can't find transparent printer paper then you can print your pictures to photo paper and copy them to transparencies using a copy machine. I'm sure the library has a copy machine but you'll have to supply the transparencies. Talk to the folks at the office supply store, tell them what you want to do and I'm sure they can fix you up. Either way will work on the overheads.

Remember that your audience will be composed of visual learners, auditory learners and kinetic learners so you will want to touch all three. Then everyone will be interested in your preso. Here's a post about the types of learners. Go to post #14.

http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1208&highlight=auditory+learners

Go to the library a couple of times and do the presentation to yourself and or your wife. You need to practice it at least once in the room where you will be presenting so you get the mechanics of the room, like lighting and voice, etc. You can even film your presentation and view it to see how you come across and where you can do better.

Above all, be yourself. Be comfortable with your audience. Be honest with them. Folks can spot a phony a mile away and if you try to be something you aren't they will know it.

Good luck and if you need more info....we'll keep the light on.

all great ideas rick thanks.
i think its a confidence thing, having not done this before, i know why i was asked, some of the folks that go to these meetings have been out in the bush with me an have seen me in action, but like i said the bush is alot different than an indoors setting, this is not the first time i have been approached, several others want me to do this also, its just when i think i know something then i spend a day in the bush with allen and realize i don't know crap-see my thread on wanna feel dumb-but everyone who has tuaght had to do the first one eh? good learning time and also will help reinforce some of my skills, i was going thru some of my notes last night and i have got around 40 plants that i know really well and have eaten, so i think i will draw on the easier ones that don't take a whole lot to learn
alot of them know about what i do with moose and bear as i do not fit the visual norm of what a rehabber looks like, i always love the surprised looks when people se the big sacary guy with all the ink talking about the orpahns and wildflowers.
thanks again for the ideas

Go easy on the number of plants you cover. Again, let the amount of time you have guide you but don't overwhelm your audience. Better to do a few well than try to present a whole lot. 40 is a lot unless you have all day. Plan on the 10 you like the best then take 20 with you. That way you have more if you need it. You can also let the preso guide how many plants you cover. Folks will probably have questions. More question, fewer plants. You get the idea. Just don't try to cram a lot at them.

And don't try to compare yourself with Allen. His him and you're you so just be you.

I did like the winter tea thing. Unfortunately, you have to be concerned with things like allergies. So keep the legal stuff in mind, too.

Poc,, Geeeesh, even I don't remember doing it that way :). You are actually advocating hands on learning? I am chagrined that I completely overlooked it.

Well I did go to school BEFORE they had Air conditioning in the classroom, if that tells you anything. In FFA in my school,Timber was the biggest Ag subject. So all the students had to do this with leaves, needles etc. The one who had the most complete/best collection actually received something for their efforts from the Ag teacher, FFA jacket or something I just don't recall. when they did this though they really learned these trees. I remember these being passed around and seeing some specimens that I had never seen before! I lived there all my life so they had to really look and look hard! It is a good way to show off a plant so you can Identify it yourself later. This will work really well as they can be used over and over again, and can be put in a binder to keep them together. You could even put together a binder for each type of terrain/habitat.

OK WE this is a good start for you. I remember when I started giving wildlife lectures In the Okefenokee Swamp Park. I was scared and nervous before my first few times. But stick with what you know and prepare for the questions you might/will be asked. Some will be so simple you could answer them in your sleep. Some questions you may not be able to answer, just be prepared for that eventuality with this response - " Sir/Ma'am I don't have that information right now, But I WILL find out and get back with you." No matter how well you know a subject, someone always comes up with a question you may not immediately know the answer to. You may know the answer, just not right at that moment. It happens. Relax, be yourself,be honest and straightforward and you will do well. Under no circumstances try to BS your way through a question.
The following is a true story: Someone was giving lectures in the Park on the wildlife. They had a very interested group and answered a lot of well informed questions. The lecture ended and everyone left. A short time later a man and woman came back and asked for the presenter. They gave him a wooden box with a brass plaque inscribed with "presented to Dr.Leaky"(SP?) it turns out that THE Dr. Leaky was in the audience and was so impressed with this S Ga.swamp rat's presentation that he gave him a Brass Microscope (That was what was in the box) as a token for a job well done!! And yes it was THAT Dr. Leaky!! You can do it man I know you can!!

two things, would never compare myself to allen, not even in the same catagory as he is..
also 40 plants was just my quick reference, i will then pick as you suggested about 20 with plans of hitting 10 of then, i am assuming this is an hour and half to maybe two hours on a tuesday evening, but yup thinking of maybe some chicory coffee and sweet fern tea, then maybe some muffins made from acorn flour, or something along those lines

Hey WE, it just popped into my mind that you could go out and still harvest some stuff now and just throw it in the freezer. Then you'd have some plants they could also learn to identify by the smell and of course see what they actually taste like.

And one other thing, regarding the other thread about forgetting plant names - if it tends to be the same ones that elude you, it might help if you put the name and picture or dried plant on some pieces of paper and stick those up on the wall in a few places. Without even noticing it so much, you look at it a few times a day and eventually, when you see the plant out in the woods, the old brain cells pull up that piece of paper on the wall, including the name. That really works for me.

Hey brother, I'm guessing you'd know better than anyone if you're "out of your element" but I'm guessing the people that asked you to present didn't think so, my bet is you're presenting to a group of people who talk about things that you live. There's a perspective to take on the presentation ( I do quite a few presentations through work, so your approach can be everything) You'll do well, don't underestimate yourself.

well thanks for all the input and encouragement, i guess its time for me to ramp(no pun intended) my quest up another notch, i think, and i have felt this for a while that my learning is disorganized, i need to document alot more than i do, then seperate and isolate, unfortunatly it is often a scarifice of my other studies when you focus so intently on one subject, but it is a subject that i feel vey pasioate about
thanks again for all your ideas

I agree with Wildwoman, collect and save. Since you have some time, and if you decide to go through with it, create an herbarium. You know, like Luca Ghini in the 15th century. You can choose a handful of them, dig em up, dry them, roots and all, pop them on some gum paper with a nice view of roots, leaves, stem and such.
