View Full Version : Thoughts on pocket knives

This may have been covered before but It amazes me how few people carry pocket knives nowadays. I realize that many employers and security measures are to blame. Since I was 6 or 7 years old I have had one constantly in my pocket with the exception of being in bed for the night. Even in school I carried a Case pocket knife (Stockman) but did nothing to draw attention to it. It was unfortunately very much more acceptable back then. For the last few years I have carried a Victorinox Farmer every waking minute and as of recently it had been supplemented with a Spyderco Tenacious at work. I use the Vic more than the Spydie though. My Vic Farmer has a place of honor in my outdoor gear. The Spyderco is really there as a last ditch ground fighting tool to defend my pistol. I would feel naked w/o my Farmer. Who else carries a pocket knife religiously and what is it. Do yall prefer the classic slip joint type (Case / Swiss army) or the Modern one hand openers (Spyderco type). In the city or in the woods modern man IMO still needs a good handy knife.

I have a #8 Opinel folding knife with my gear but can't remember ever using it for anything else other than cutting food items.

I have had constantly in my pocket a two blade Barlow pocket knife since before I went into the military in 1972 (no wise cracks :)) It is in fact to this day the same knife. All battered and banged up. People look shocked when I am the only one that has a cutting impliment at times. It is a hassle to travel with on a plane, have to put it in checked bags. I feel uneasy when I don't have it with me. Any other blade I carry (depending on circumstance) , I consider as secondary to it.

Wildwoman, that is an oldie but a goodie. Good choice. Pal, your a man after my own heart. That Barlow is a classic design that few can argue with. I sometimes miss carying my carbon steel Case Stockman but I sweat on it and you know what happens. That Vic Farmer has solved my rust problem and given me some essential camp tools to boot. All in all great choices yall. Best.

I have carried a knife in one shape, form,or fashion for about 40 years, and for the last 30-35 of those years most often it was a "Slip-joint" however in the last 10 it has been mostly the newer locking type Tactical folder(supplemented with the traditional "slip-joint" of course). I've carried most of the older companies knives-Gerber, Buck,Case, Kershaw, Schrade, and Old-Timer. No offense but I have never liked the Spyderco's Even though everyone tells me they are really good knives. But the Brand that I have really come to like is CRKT. Case has gotten outrageous in price. Victorinox about the same way. I've had too many stolen or lost to put that much money in something that I may not have in a years time. For that very reason I usually have at least 3 on me at all times now. A slipjoint and 2 folders. Sometimes 3 folders. I have had to "lend" people a knife and still need mine as well. Another reason is if one gets dull and I need a really sharp blade but don't have time to sharpen it. Nowadays the slipjoint is mostly relegated to finer, more intricate tasks, and rarely used. I even own one Specialized knife, an Equestrian pocketknife, it has 2 "blades" hoof pick and a hoof knife. The hoof knife is also good for carving in spots you can't reach with a normal straight blade... like the bowl of a spoon.
Boy did you get me on the wrong topic!! I just realized how long I've been rambling!! Time for me to hush now, or I could go on for pages!!!

I usually have at least 3 knives on me at any given time. My leatherman, a gerber gator, and 1 or 2 small cheap folders. I use the cheap folders the most, saving my good stuff for the times when they are needed. Also, I learned long ago, NEVER USE YOUR GOOD KNIFE WHILE FISHING!!!! (If only someone had told me that before I had lost 3 or 4 good knives to the sea).:thumbup1:

Hey, no offense taken. Pocket knives are as much a personal preference as shoes, maybe more so. The Spyderco's are nice but like you said, they are not for everyone. the Swiss army knives are still a great deal for the $$ though, especially for the tools, quality, fit , and finish IMO. Case knives are still close to my heart after carying one for so many years but you are correct on their priceyness. I don't mind reading a good long "rant" on an interesting topic. Keep it commin yall.

Not real sure, but it may stand for "Tool Steel". Does it rust? If so that may be it. The reason I say this is I had a gerber once that had the "T" in the model # the only difference in the two is that the one without the "T" was stainless steel. The one with the "T" was tool steel.

Mine has been through jungle (SEA), swimming (not intentional :) and everything in between. One "grip" is gone, he other chipped. I love the glim of the sharp edge edge on this warrior. Beware, old and rusty doesn't mean it does not work (sort of like me)

I carried the Case stockman for many years, I probably carried one before I was 6 or 7. Times have changed, never saw anyone use a knife all the years and after in school. Now I find I use the SAK more than any. I carry 2, the SAK and a SOG FlashII. The SOG is more
on the always being armed habit, never been used to cut anything. I do use the SAK every
day for everything and it's nice to know if I lose or break it I can pick up another for $30.

It is getting kinda grey as to what is legal. I hesitate to carry my fixed blade when I am off work and hesitate to carry my folder when I am at work. Blade length and whether or not it is considered a tactical knife is very grey to me. I still do but hesitate in some situations. It all started when a Leo made me throw one under a door at the courthouse when I went to get a marriage certificate. I love carrying my Mora with a homebuilt sheath at home in my pocket but wonder if it is legal to carry a fixed blade concealed. I really don't think any are problem here that would get you arrested unless there was an altercation involving the knife. I'd still reach for my right hand first before a knife for self defense.

Like CS said, there is a lot of grey area, concerning knives, over here. (And keep in mind, that there is federal law....and then there is state law, and all the states don't have the same laws.) There are the laws kind of like yours, about how big, and if you have a reason to have it, on you, if the knife is concealed.

The funny thing, is that where I live, (North Carolina) our "concealed carry permits" are actually a "concealed handgun permit".

That's right. Technically....it is legal for me to carry a high power handgun, concealed (I have a permit)....but I could go to jail if I had a knife in my pocket, that is too big! How's that for crazy?:innocent:

Winnie, it would appear that a standard pocket knife would be legal to carry
"knives where the blade folds into the handle, like a Swiss Army Knife, aren't illegal as long as the blade is shorter than three inches (7.62 cms)"
That is approximately the same length as the pocket knife I have always carried.
But then you do know how they are interpreting the law much better than I would

Good old Va. There are some knives that can't be concealed (Dirk, Dagger< bowie Knife, Switchblade, etc) but you can carry anything openly and that includes handgun, rifle and shotguns....WITHOUT a permit.

Nearly any pocket knife can be carried in your pocket.

Now for something really odd. Va ha full preemption. No locality can pass an ordnance regulating the sale or carry of a firearm. Knives are not included in that.

I can and have, gone into a Board Of Supervisors meeting, wearing a 4" 44 magnum, but had to leave my Stockman folder in the car.

I carried a Barlow knife since I was very young, but moved to a SAK.
Enjoy all the different tools, and still use it everyday for something.
Actually my SAK money clip also has a blade on it.

Also been carrying a cheap lock blade folder "clip" knife, mostly for work, when I was working, the "Hey anyone have a knife? knife.
So I guess you could say three, minimum, as well as a small version of a leather-man.

I like this one as it also has a small flashlight in one handle, so I can leave my Mini Mag on the shelf, unless I go back to work.

For years I wore a Gerber Touche' Belt buckle knife, until I lost the blade for a couple of weeks. After I found the knife part, I retired it.
Bought a cheap belt buckle knife but the blade was up-side down to the way I wear my belt, so retired also.

Then of course all hunting coats have a knife that stays there, and I do carry a belt knife, when hunting.

BOB's all have a fixed blade and folder, already packed.

Knives are like any other tool, firearm, truck, boat, trailer, you can never have enough, just keep them deployed in different spots, so no one knows how many you really have.

So I guess you could say I have a couple........

I have been carrying a Swiss Army Knife of some kind since I was in grade school. Funny thing was that all my teachers knew I had the knife and none of them ever cared. In fact, they would often ask to borrow it from me when they needed to cut something. I still have one in my pocket at all times.

I've had quite a few, but I have finally settled on the Victorinox Fieldmaster as the (for me) best all-around configuration. I have never cared much for the Wenger SAKs. Not sure why. The only thing I can think of is that their scissors had a sort of serrated-ish blade that didn't cut paper with a nice clean, even line. I know, I know, I'm too anal about such things...

What I really wish Victorinox would do is create a "make-your-own" SAK service. You could select the size of the knife and then choose the implements that you wanted and they would put it together for you. I would willingly pay a premium to be able to specify exactly what I wanted like that.

I also usually have a Gerber Multiplier on my belt. It is pretty old, has been treated rough and is now really showing it. It is probably time to retire that tool and get an upgrade.

I have always carried a pocketknife of some sort since I was a kid. I have had a Spyderco Endura clipped to my pocket for the past eight years and use it every day for something.

I keep a SAK Farmer in my coat pocket fall through Spring but don't tolerate it well in summer in a pocket unless I'm wearing cargo shorts.

I've tried all sorts of replacements for the Endura but can't seem to get rid of it. I have started carrying a Benchmade Ritter RSK whenever I go off the pavement. It is a very capable knife but doesn't ride as light in the pocket as the Endura.

Always carry a knife, that's basic.

Your last sentance are words to live by. Correct you are, Sir. IMO the Benchmade Ritter is a great choice for off the beaten path carry. Very strong design. It's also nice to know others who have similar tastes in their sharps. I just can't shelf my Farmer even though I have lots of other "Tacticool" blades and slip joints. I'm a pretty big guy so a thickish pocket knife does not get in my way too much. Normally in the woods my RC-3 accompanies my Farmer. If I want to go light my cord wrapped Becker BK11 (Kabar version, carbon steel) replaces my Rat RC-3. You sure can get that carbon steel super sharp, can't you? It is very interesting to me to hear what everbody prefers for their pocket carry blade. Stay safe.

That's the trouble Pal, interpretation
It is generally an offence to carry a knife in public without good reason or lawful authority (for example, a good reason is a chef on the way to work carrying their own knives)
This is the bit that causes the problems.

There have been cases where a small pocket knife has got a person into trouble. Personally, much as I don't like it, I'd rather not carry one than get into trouble. Although the liklihood of me getting stopped and searched is remote, Murphy's law states.......

Winnie, find one that's inside the law. The Swiss Army knife would be a good example. Discuss the legality of it with a local constable if it would make you feel better. You just never know when something is going to happen and, as Pict said, a knife is the most basic tool you can have. In the extreme, a knife alone can save your life. In the moderate, they are just darned handy.

because of my un-ending crusade! In the last 6 months, I've given away 8 pocket knives because of exactly the situations you folks have been discussing. I'm always the only one around with a knife in my pocket so I usually wind up giving the knife to the person who needed it and going home to my little private stock of pocket knives and dropping another one in my pocket. Suddenly! last week I found myself out of pocket knives! Blasphemy says I, but there is a hunting and fishing store right across the street from the office, so I'm going to nip over and pick something up this afternoon.

I could really relate to that thing about flying. I put my pocket knife into my check in luggage at the airport just before I turn the luggage over and then I don't want to let go of the bag.

Now, I also have within reach in the truck 5 throwing knives and a hawk.

At work I also carry this fancy plier thingy that has a few blades.

Depending on the worksite, I sometimes strap on a machette or belt on the bowie.

And before we got the new leather couch, I wore a patch knife on my side. Kinda stopped wearing things on the belt when I'm home relaxing.

I don't fly anymore, when I did pocket knives were acceptable. Now........just put an obsidian lucky rock in my wallet.

Winnie, give the following reasons for carrying a knife.
1) You never know when you'll need to cut something with all haste. Like a seat belt holding someone into a wrecked car, or a leash that an dog or person or both are tangled in and strangling or anything else.
2) I made need a sharp knife to cut a burger in half and the fast food restaurant doesn't even have a pitiful plastic one available. Also food related I may want to have an impromptu picnic with some bread, cheese, fruit and wine with a lady I just met.
3) I want to open the mail I pick up at my postal box, envelopes, packages and taped boxes all require cutting.
4) If accosted by ruffians I have the God given right, According to English Common Law to defend myself. Then say,"This knife would be pitious for that purpose but better than nothing at all. I can't wait for you lot to arrive and save me. Anyway like our American cousins say, 'Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.' You can't fault that logic."
All more than good reasons.

at work i carry a large benchmade griptillian. it deploys fast, stays sharp and can take a real beating. when not at work i carry a queen cutlery canoe. just got it a few weeks ago. this is my favorite knife that i have ever carried! the stag and the nickle bolsters are pretty! and the D2 blades are wicked sharp and stay that way for a long time, i havent sharpened it once since ive started carrying it.

right now i have a slipjoint addiction and im pretty sure my next knife is gonna be a barlow knife. thats a really nice barlow Pal334! im jealous! heres a picture of my canoe:

It makes for a easy get away or that second shot to the cheeck bone just to remind them you will not go down with out a fight.

Winnie: think rolled up newspaper. I have used it to deliver a jab to the throat when I was in a position that I was forced to be unarmed. Completely innocent looking, especially for a lady. The bad guy becomes occupied trying to breathe and loses interest in further nefarious activity. The other adantage, you don't risk injury to your fingers or hand

I carry at least 4 knives at all times. I wear my Cold Steel Finn Bear on my belt on my right side, my Leatherman Wave on the left side, a lockback all steel folder with a half serrated blade in a horizontally mounted sheath on my back right side(that knife for me is a one trick pony, cut the seatbelt or rope quick) in my right pocket I have a Timberline Neeley lock single blade pocket knife. In my left pocket on my keyring, that is also on a carbiner and lanyard attached to my beltloop, is a Victorinox SAK Farmer model. I also occassionally wear a semi-custom Helle neck knife. It's a small skinner/hunting knife. All my knives are at least razor sharp. I have actually shaved my face with three of them before.

Not prying at all Pal. If you're caught with a blade or something resembling one out in the street, say byebye. It's the nanny state gone bonkers over here.

Super duper double and triple razor sharp.

hoosierarcher

Razor sharp is just sharp enough to cut dry hair. There is sharper all the way to one molecule of material for the length of the edge. The only substances we can currently get to one mole of thinness are ceramics, glass and obsidian.
Beyond razor sharp is what is commonly referred to as "scary sharp."

Old saying I learned early in life, NEVER hit anyone with your fist. Fingers & hands break, teeth cut plus a chance to pick up a disease you don't want to
take home as in AIDS for one. I have used open hand since I was 13 and only if
a nice club or rock wasn't available or a stick, my personal favorite next to a heavy glass ashtray no longer available in bars I am told. Word of advice, don't use a knife for defense, only as a last resort. That little blade is assault with a deadly weapon in the states and a hanging crime in England or Australia or so I have been told. :sneaky2:

I find a jab in the eye with your index finger an excellent method of incapacitaion, and you don't break your knuckles in the process.:)

****TRY THIS INSTEAD****

With your strong hand : Four fingers extended from the hand held VERY rigid and splayed out with the thumb tucked into the palm. Jab those four fingers into the general area of the opponents eyes. At least one or two fingers will find the mark. Follow this very quickly with jab from your off hand as follows : Thumb extended from hand in an "L" sign with your finger held TIGHTLY together. Slam the crook of the "L" into the opponents throat. First he is blinded then secondly his larynx will be temporarily spasmed and he will not be able to breath. HE IS OUT OF THE GAME. You will not even have to leave your bar stool for this pleasantry. You can then take your last sip of beer and walk out without any further problems from your opponent. Her will be too busy trying to see and breath. It is VERY fast and you will not risk breaking your hand for any of his buddies that might be stupid enough to step up. It will work on his buddy too for a second quick incapacitation. Very easy to learn and very effective. It takes the liquid b@lls right out of Mr. Johnny Bad @ss. Trust me, it works! Next lesson we'll discuss pressure point strikes and joint manipulation. You'd be surprised at the attention you can command from a six inch piece of broom stick. Sounds like a party!!!. Be safe.

Just for you Rick!! This came from my newly purchased book- "Primitive Technology- a Book of Earth Skills" from the Society of Primitive Technology-Edited by David Wescott P.81
Where a steel edge knife will dull, obsidian and others won't dull nearly as easy.Sharper and the edge will last longer.

In Brazil we can get imported knives pretty much the same as here but you pay a 100% premium. That translates into paying double or more so top of the line knives are out of the question.

I have been searching for a Brazilian made knife for a long time that I could recommend for my students and finally discovered Zebu knives. These are traditional Brazilian "Pica Fumo" (tobacco chopper) style pocket knives and they really do a good job.

THESE ARE NOT SOLD IN THE US

They come in two sizes and handles are either wood, aluminum, or acrylic. The blades are stainless.

I made this sheath to carry a large Zebu and a Doan tool. It makes a great combo with a machete.

Do you use a hand awl to sew leather with?

I have a hand awl but use it mainly for sewing packs.

On leather I use the two needle method. Thread the line with a needle on both ends and pull it through to the center where you want to begin the stitch. Pass the left needle through the hole and then the right needle through the same hole going the other way, cinch, repeat.

My stitching holds well but you can tell I'm not a professional. I try to get the holes as even as I can but without the proper tools it's very difficult.

Great choices - all.

I'm on my second Buck Folding Hunter Model 110 . Had one since '78. Easy to sharpen and holds an edge. Have others for specific uses, e.g. skinning, diving and even a hook-blade switchblade for jumpmastering to cut various nylon cords during emergencies, etc. OK, you paratroopers, you know what I mean and, you older ones may have seen one. Contrary to legend, I did not carry a Sykes-Fairborn stuck in my boot. Knew a guy once that did; landed once and it went through his foot, but he was macho to the end. No that was not me.

I got one of those hook blade switchblades( if this is what you are talking about) from a USAF pilot in Vietnam (was a very young pup at the time :) ). Here is a picture. I lost it some wheres along the way. Was a pretty handy little thing:

But, yes Rick, razor sharp isn't the sharpest a knife can get. Also, there is a big difference between a molecule and a mole. But I am sure hoosierarcher meant to say molecule instead of mole. :sailor:

The workmanship is pretty good, very sharp cutting edge, locks on the key ring securely. You can open it up 180 degrees so it's easy to grip.

No offense taken. I have personally never taken anything from a citizen that was not admitted into "Property and Evidence" for a crime that was commited. I have not and will not take anything from anyone if the law was not broken. Your right to carry your knife, legally carried sidearm, or anything for that matter is NOT less important than my right to carry. My conscious is crystal clear. Stay safe, Brother.
