View Full Version : If you could start your own business, what would it be?

Let me explain, If I could start my own business right now, I would open a snack bar. A fun place where people could bring their kids, buy ice cream, some chili fries, a hot dog, well you get the idea. I would have 50's music all the time, because it would have a "Happy Days" motiff to it, including a life size cut-out of Fonzi! A cool old time juke box and all the staff would be dressed the part. Of course it is only a dream. A friend and I were talking yesterday about what kind of business would prosper during a depression, when everyone is broke. If you look at history there are plenty of businesses that were started during the Great Depression. My friend said a butcher shop would be ideal, most people would not know what to do if someone handed them a live chicken or rabbit. Can you imagine a pig or a cow! All I ever cooked was already dead! I suppose a butcher shop would work and you can be paid in meat. What are your thoughts. Mary :tabletalk:

I have my lawn business already, the wife wants to add a nursery though. Then maybe branch out into landscaping as well. I have always wanted to run a little bed and breakfast though, would be cool up here I think.

HA HA HA you know with all that land you have you could build a few more small cabins and rent them out as vacations retreats. That's what I would like to do.

Good question Mary. I see a some folks going through the motions of their daily grind and they are miserable. Having a dream, and then a plan that can be worked toward is a worthy endeavor. I did start my own business - kind of by accident - but now I wouldn't change a thing.

I wouldn't want to start one. My dream job would be either getting paid for just reading books or being a wildlife rehabber.

Someone once said. "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life."
Well I actually disagree with that because even if the job was gigalo it could become what is metaphorically called "the daily grind." Meaning, anything a man does for his daily bread and all the other things he wants becomes work even drudgery.
That being said I had, until recently. always wanted to open my own restaurant. I can no longer work 100 hour weeks required to make that sort of business successful.
I tried recently to raise the money to buy an archery magazine and become the editor and publisher. The magazine was established and had hundreds of subscribers already and was a business with still greater growth potential. A big publishing conglomerant out bid me. I would like to open a small archery business with an indoor range that allowed shots of up to 40 yards, offering custom made bows and arrows and accessories. I would run shooting leagues and have a lounge area where bowhunters could sit and enjoy a beverage and conversation and/or watch hunting DVDs on a big screen TV.
But since we're just wishing outloud here I would really rather just win the 81 Million dollar PowerBall jackpot and disappear into the deep woods to a self sufficient retreat.

There is probably a good reason why this won't work, but I haven't checked into it enough, to know.

I've thought about opening a place to do X-rays and CT scans. I think that if you could stay busy, you'd make a fortune.....and be able to do it cheaper than hospitals, etc., so you would also be helping people.

I don't think that just doing it cheaper will get you the flow of people that you would need, though, because people don't ask, or seem to care about the cost of such things. (The ins. company pays for it.)

This third party paying is also why the cost of health care, is getting out of hand. (IMHO).:innocent:

My wife used to manage an imaging center that the company she worked for built. Lots of licensing requirements to open - even more to stay open. It takes a lot of operating capital to run one. Their staff radiologist's salary was $400,000 and that was 13 years ago. Then there's the insurance that you talk about.

Now - opening up such a center someplace in Central America should we ever move to a health care system as outlined in HB 3200 - you might become very wealthy. Medical vacations are becoming more and more popular in some parts of the world.

As far a a retail business I know what mine would be!! When I was homeless I came up with the idea. My "Street name" was " Catfish" because of my handlebar mustache. The place would be built resembling a Log Cabin. Name of the shop---"Catfish's Cutlery Cabin", or C3 for short. I would like to offer every type of Blade I could get my hands on- Knives, machetes, axes, saws, Butcher knives,.... Even a portion of the store that offered some survival necessities. That would require quite some capital though.
My other Idea would be to offer some kind of guide service in a wilderness area, nothing long term.... bird watching, and short weekender camping trips, something like that. I have worked as a guide before and even working with "Tourons", it can be fun. It was the job I liked the best out of all the jobs I've ever had

This is an interesting thread. Maybe a different slant on the question could be: In case of a survival situation or some sort of societal or economic collapse, what would other people value enough to pay you with barter items? The slaughterhouse/ butcher/ meatcutter sounds like a good candidate whether by raising and selling/ trading your own meat or to slaughter and pack other people's livestock. Maybe a wool/cotton/flax/ hemp spinner/ weaver to make cloth, sewing, quilting, hide tanning and leathercraft, reloading ammunition, gunsmithing, welding, beekeeping (for honey), maybe a pickler or a canner, brewing and distilling (oh yes, this will be in demand), etc. So, for these and other simple-living tasks, which ones would you consider doing even now? Maybe this isn't the initial intent of the question, but it is what came to mind. Something to think about.

I want to own a business selling rat manikins. I would use them to train lab workers how to gently handle live rats so they don't hurt them or get bitten. Either that or video game trainer. For a fee, you can come to my clinic and I'll show you how to relax and be competitive.

I met a guy in Captiva, Florida that got tired of working. Bought a small houseboat and a pontoon boat. Put a few bbq grills on the boat along with a dozen coolers with soda and beer. He said that the first two years he did it, he would travel around to the fishermen, selling food and drinks. He had been doing it about four years when I talked to him. He was still living on the houseboat, but now it was mostly anchored (while he fished) and people would come to him. They even paid him to clean and cook their catches. He now had his two sons, along with two more pontoon boats working.

Thats cool. I lived on Sanibel for a year and worked on both Sanibel and Captiva. My Mother and her husband have lived on Sanibel for the past 25 years. He is a charter boat Captain and she writes fish stories. Sounds fun but in truth a heck of a lot of work and no such thing as a weekend. Bad weather dictates days off. I still go back for a couple weeks every year just to hang out. I never heard of the houseboat chef. Sounds like a Jimmy Buffett song in the making.

We'd stary at Jensens Twin Palm Resort (dumpy little place - just perfect). He used to use the little marina there. Last time I was there was September 12, 2001 (got there on the 10th - then the attack - on the 12th a mandatory evacuation for approaching storm).

Hey Pal, just thought I would tell you, my dad made toys and gave them away, rocking horses, wagons, you name it. It was great to watch the faces of the kids rocking or playing with some toy made of wood. He was offered $200.00 for one of his bigger rocking horses, he refused, would not sell any, but loved to give them away....For me, I would love to work outdoors, I used to be a private warden for a large lumber company that had a very large fishing camp in this area, and loved it. Would love to find something like that again. You were outdoors everyday, keeping trails clear, watching the fishing pools and lakes in the area, and watching out for forest fires. would love to land a job like that again.

After this many years in the "rat race" would be nice to be able to do something just for the enjoyment. I have friends with a lumber yard, so raw material (from their scrap pile) should be no problem. And the "payment" of smiles and laughs makes it all worth while.

In the USA I did have several businesses, including private investigation agency, security consulting firm, process serving business and a martial arts school. Over here there are a great many restrictions on what businesses foreigners may operate, so I now have a small food stand, a peanut farm, and soon plan to open martial arts school and a beauty parlor.

Well, I gave this thread a few days to try something before I responded.

I put on a pair of flower print Hawaiian style shorts and my bath robe and took a small table and lawn chair down to the end of my driveway with a full pot of coffee, my cigarettes and one of them sun umbrellas, prepared to wait out the day. Then I put up a big dayglo pink and green sign that said "genius for hire". So far, one passing driver has given me $5. to go put some clothes on and the neighbor across the street has given me $10 to take down the sign and put up something a little more subtle, so I think it's working out pretty good.

I have owned a few in my 37 years of life. I owned and sold a hotshot transporting company. 24 hour service hauling parts for Cat machinery to the mines in the western states. Sold it.

I owned a handyman service doing house repairs. Sold out of it. went back to plumbing.

I own at this time a Bathroom renovation company, And a family ran not for profit renovating bathrooms for disabled vets and the handicaped (still trying to gain funding for this to get rolling). We have done a few at our expens but it is hard to do that with out more funding from donations. With the economy like it is I went back to work for another plumbing outfit. It sure is nice not having to worry about anything but going to work every day.

I owned A hunting guide service for along time and sold out of it to teach my kids how to hunt and survive in the out doors. We still do what is called a scouting guide service for hunters. If an out of state hunter gets drawn for a hunt and wants to do a DIY hunt with no guide service we will scout his unit for him with detailed maps photos and videos of what we found in his hunt unit. We even offer a GPS package so the guy can just buy a GPS from us with waypoints and all that saved on it for his hunt.

I also am a dealer for BArk river knives, ontario knives, marbles knives and a few more. I also sale solar ovens and a few more prep style items.

My wife does photography. I finally talked her into doing it as a in home job. she is booked with weddings and family photos all the time. She will travel to locations for the photos. so we use those as family trips when she gets them.

I am working on doing a few more ideas but will keep them hush hush until they come to be. I have had about 4 ideas stolen and missed the boat. I will not do that again.

Several banks turned him down for financing, so he gave up - figuring it wasn't such a good idea afterall. The plan? A place where you could drive in, get your oil and filters changed in about thirty minutes. About a year later the first Jiffy Lube opened up.

What I do is make the toys on an exaggerated scale (as in not to proper scale) and then paint them bright colors, reds, yellows, oranges. This way they sort of resemble cartoon toys. I also offer free repairs for the inevitable collison and rough play repairs. Their smiles are my reward. And who knows , may actually be teaching them some generosity for their future

Toys are always a great choice for business - but rivalry is just enormous. You need to be noticed. A small advertising effort would help - even if it will be built on the reviews of your clients.
As for me in the world of AI and digitalization there are eternal things like flowers.
My dream is to create a small floristic online and physical shop selling different types of flower compositions. I already have some enthusiasts with some skills in floristry and I want to dare to start this adventure. Some time spent already on Coursera on how to start business, how floristry works and how to advertise such a type of goods. And, of course, later on, I plan a small mobile app for better customer service. I tried doing this with freelancers and stopped half-way due to messy processes and uncertain terms, so my friend referred me to this page - https://talmatic.com and now I already have a date this year when my project will start its lifecycle.
