read that jaguars are or possibly making there way back into north america, there were some sightings in arizona and possibly in new mexico, saw some photos of supposed sightings in arizona.although they are alot bigger than a mountain lion and from what i gather more aggressive your odds of being attacked are prob.slim to nil.but still something to be aware of.has anybody else heard anything on this?

It has been reported in the news of late. I have a few personal experiences with the Carolina Puma. I have seen 2 at different times. They are solid black and I promise you your hair will stand on your neck if you see one. Both were at a relative safe distance. I have also witnessed one cat that I would have called a mountain lion when I lived out west. This cat was in SC and was very large at about 150 yds. I could not determine what it was with my naked eye. So along with a friend we closed slowly on the cat which was preoccupied taking a dump. As we got about 75 yds. I was sure it was a mountain lion. The cat knew we were there but was not alarmed. When he/she finished it's business it just bounded off in the swamp. Leaving behind a perfect cat pile like you might find in your mother in laws bathtub present was a large tape worm. Now this is an area that me and another friend duck hunt annually. I told him what I had seen and he called BS. I assured him it wasn't. That very same year as my friend sat in the dark waiting for me and shooting time to begin for our duckhunt. A mother cat and 3 cubs appeared almost on top of him. He froze in the dark as she meandered on her way with her family. When I arrived my friend was as white as a ghost and was now sure I wasn't BSN him. As for the Jaguar I haven't seen one only saw on the news of their supposed comeback. Be sure there are big cats in North America and they are BIG.....
They used to be native to my area of Brazil but now we only have mountain lions and ocelot. They are very big cats. Mac
My guess is they are probably exotics the owners released because they could no longer care for them or some that escaped. Just a guess since they are no longer native to North America.

Classification and Range
Jaguars belong to the family Felidae, which includes 36 species of cats. Jaguars are classified under the genus Panthera which includes four species of "big cats", the jaguar, tiger, lion and leopard.*
There are eight subspecies of jaguar. Jaguars are considered the equivalent of leopards in the New World, and are the largest species of cats in the Western Hemisphere. They are distributed throughout most of Mexico, Central and South America, while lone individuals are rarely seen in the southwestern United States.
Straight from your link Rick, I gotta disagree and the Carolina Puma was thought to be extinct but I can assure it isn't. It was just in the news that more than one Jaguar had been spotted - well actually they are all spotted!

from what ive read the best guess is they are possibly coming up through mexico,i guess back in the 1800s possibly early 1900s or so there used to be alot of them in western south western texas, new mexico, arizona, until they were thought to be all killed off.i dont have the info to back it up but my opinoin is they tend to follow a migratory pattern esp.when food supply gets low

Hows about the Florida Panther Crash? I never saw one while I was in FL.
Isaura Junqueria Fagundes, age 90, is the daughter of Eugnio Junqueira and the grandmother of one of my deacons, Paulo. These names probably don't ring a bell. Eugnio Junqueira was a close friend and hunting partner of Sasha Siemel the famous hunter of jaguars in southern Brazil.
One evening Isaura's daugther came to visit and she heard I was from Pennsylvania and lived not far from where Sasha Siemel settled down later in life in Green Lane, Pa. Isaura made a special visit to church to give me several photos of her father and Sasha taken during the golden age of big cat hunting in Brazil.
These men wern't fooling around. Sasha often hunted the big cats with a "Zaguya" or large spear. Isaura said her father Eugnio Junqueira was the only man Sasha taught to hunt them in this manner.
Here is a photo from her family collection, used with her permission, that she gave me copies of.

On another overnight catfish trip in the same swamp "Pocalla Swamp" I was alone and first I heard the blood curdling scream of a Cougar. Again the hair is up on my neck and i am having a really hard time continuing my fishing. Then about sun up I witnessed an Alligator Gar of more than 300 lbs. Suspending itself up out of the water and shaking trees in it's mouth. Those are not native to SC either. This swamp has my total respect now.. We lost access after close to 20 yrs of hunting and fishing it to a newly built hazardous waste recycler! So sad! I'd give anything to go back!

We would have sightings of mountain lion in northern Maine, and no one would believe it until we finally found a (and I mean 1) paw print. we took photos and showed it to a wildlife biologist who confirmed it was a mountain lion print and asked us who sent it to us and why were we pulling his leg. Some people just don't want to believe.
We have had the "Panther" sightings in Georgia for years.
Here is a cat that a guy shot last year.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v171/FrankV/IMG_0239.jpg
There was a big discussion questioning if this was a pen raised or wild cat. I think they finally agreed that it was a wild cat that may have migrated up from Florida.
I don't really know. I do know that if I saw one in the woods, I would not shoot it unless I was provoked by it.
I just read that this cat was an endangered Florida Panther. Looks like a mountain lion to me.
I think what happens is when you are speaking of Pumas, Jaguars, Panthers, and even Cougars..........the cats get all mixed up. The terms are used and mis-represented. Jags are also called Leopards, Panthers can be black or have spots like Leopards, then the Cougar seems to take over when speaking of any cat that is smaller than a Mountain Lion but bigger than Felix.
Then when you start talking of melanism in the cat family, it all gets mixed up.

Jaguars and leopards are nopt the same animal. A leopards spots are not the same and they are built way diferant from each other. They are also not in the same areas. I run Mountain lions here in AZ. I have seen one jaguar and two black cats. I have called them black panthers. I was raised on the san pedro river in az it is a major corador for everything crossing the border into Arizona. A jaguar is a masive Cat in comparison to mountain lions. and weight wise they dwarf the leopard. I will dig up my info on the last jaguar leagaly killed in AZ. It was on the san carlos apache indian reservation I do know that. I have some great photos of Hounds in somewhat of a ground battle with another Jaguar in AZ it was not the famous Macho B.(named for his spots forming the letter B on his neck).

Now that takes some balls!
Everyone talks about what to bring into bear country or to bring for protection camping but this guy went out on a hunt for a large cat with a speer!
Either that or he traded the rifle for the spear just for the photo. (shrug)
Maybe he had to take the spear away from the cat, now that would take some balls.
That would be no big deal. He tosses the balls to the cat. While the cat's playing with his balls you grab the spear. Easy peasy.

Poco,
I don't know the guy who shot the cat.
I don't know if I would have shot it, as I've read a few diff. stories. It's a big deal in Ga as the DNR is always telling us that panthers and large cats are not in our areas. That is just wrong. I-75 in S. Ga. a big cat was hit a few years back.
Up in the Cohutta mountains, you don't know what is running around.
I don't buy the story that there are no panthers, jags, or large cats not roaming around.
Hell, I was in the middle of nowhere, in a tree stand and here comes a wild goat. I could have shot it and had goat meat, but if it is running around the mountains with all the bears, coyotes, bobcats, and other critters and surviving, who am I to end it's life.
I've seen some pretty big bobcats, some as large as a small deer. Kind of gave me the heeby jeebies. Thought it was pretty weird, I thought bobcats had small cute little tails, not longer ones. Hmmmmmmmmm..............maybe.............naw..... .....it was a bobcat. DNR says there are no large cats in Georgia.
Yeh right.LOL.

So the guy pays me two salmon and says all I have to do is lay in the back of the truck and look like I'm sleeping. Uh, yeah. I can handle that. The next thing I know everyone says, 'Look at the cougar!". Okay, I admit I'm a big guy but, please, a cougar? Do I look like I run around in the woods and eat vermin? Uh, no. So don't insult me. Next question.

I don't know anything about this but is it out of line to think of crossbreeding between different cats the size of our bobcats, wildcats with other larger cats, mountain lions etc. If their breed is depleted and they get a little randy is it possible or possible but not logical?
It's certainly been done through intervention (liger for example) and there has been documented breeding between an ocelot and a linx that were raised in captivity together but I don't think it would work that way in the wild. Even if it did, the male hybrid is generally sterile so it would only be a one generation thing....or fling as the case were.

I'll drag this back up...
I camp in cat country. The Florida Panther's numbers are greatly under estimated. They do this on purpose. I have seen a documentary where the host was squatted on a prairie and said that all adult panthers in Florida were collared and that seeing even one of those would be extremely rare. While he was saying this a female panther with two cubs walked behind him in sight of the camera. She was not collared.
Everyone in my family except my wife had seen panthers. We camp and turkey hunt on Bear Island in Big Cypress Swamp. We have seen "black" panthers sitting on Turner River Road right near camp. These are more than likely just wet panthers. We also regularly get bears and gators in camp. The bears are scavenging and the gators are migrating to other bodies of water.
I read the story about the panther killed in GA. They said that they don't exist up there. But, then in the same article they say that they have been known to migrate up that way and also in the panhandle.
I saw a panther at a swamp buggy show in Palm Beach just east of Okeechobee. It was a short walk back into the woods from the show. Absolutely certain of the animal I saw. Looked on the FWC website and they say no panthers in that area. Then they go on to explain that one was seen last year. But, biologist found no solid evidence. So it was reported as a false sighting. The did note that a panther was killed on the road adjacent to the sighting the day after the biologist found no evidence. But, since the biologist didn't find any evidence it is still listed as a false sighting.
They go out every year and tree the panthers with dogs, then shoot them with trancs and tag them. They guess they get most of them. LOL
I see an aweful lot of untagged panthers. All of the dead panthers they show have no collars. They are just straight lying about the numbers to keep the funding up. Which I don't really have a problem with keeping the funding up.

Never heard of a bear attacking either down here. Well, I did have a guy say he was mudding and a bear attacked a tire on his buggy.

You got to watch out for momma gators. They will charge you. But, usually its a bluff and she'll hiss and puff at you. If she gets too close then just wrap her on the snout with a stick.
I can't find any pics of the big gators. But, they tend to be in the best holes and usually will be two gators with the male being somewhere between 12 and 14 foot. That is what tourists call 17'. LOL
It would be the bathing hole at brown drawers if I were there. There are only two kinds of water, period. Those without gators and those that I'm never ever around.
It looks like that baby gator in the 3rd pic has bait to catch a big gator. Now all he has to do is drag you to the water.
Even if that was the very last mud hole on earth I'd never be that thirsty. Never!
