Hey Guys! I was wondering about the rule about "store what you eat, eat what you store". I know that is not written in stone or anything but have you ever passed up a good bargain just because it is something you dont normally eat? For example, I am at Walmart and I always check the clearance carts at the edge of the isles. Thay have Zatarins Jambalaya and Red Beans and Rice for 50 cents. They had Stokes enchilada sauce at 3 for 1. I have never had these products, dont know if I like them, but will try them and see what happens. It seems harder and harder to find good bargains, so I am just going with whatever is on sale, even if it is not something I am used to eating. What do you do?:huh:

Well I figure if the time comes where I would have to rely on my "extra" stores of food, I would be thankfull with whatever I have. Food is used to sustain life first and foremost, taste comes in second. But man I sure do love pork products. Ham, bacon, sausage........:)

You shoulda been here after Hurricane Katrina. Everyone was cooking the stuff from the freezer before it went bad, and it was shared with everyone. AND MOST OF IT WAS SOME DARN GOOD EATIN!!!
We didn't dig into the stuff that stored well until the freezer was empty and could be taken off the generator to save fuel.

It just depends on what it is, Mary. I like to purchase things we enjoy eating but I don't pass up a good bargain on something we WOULD eat. I'd walk right on by tofu or rice cakes no matter what the price, however.

I'm with catfish on taste. I know food is food and staying alive is priority 1 but man, when the chips are down there's something about a comfort food that can really lift the spirits. Chocolate coffee ice cream anyone?

Yup, I took Ricks advice on this one, and store what we like to eat. That doesn't mean to say I haven't got some things we not particularly fond of, canned veg being one of them.
I generally buy just one of something we then try it, if we like it I'll buy more. There's not a lot of point having stuff in storage you don't like. Even in a survival situation the one thing guaranteed to lift the spirits is something nice to eat.

I guess you guys are right, after all there is always bartering. Someone is bound like this stuff. Also you hear all kinds of stories of people eating all kinds of disgusting things like maggoty bread. When you are starving, food is food.

Mary - I agree with the storing food you normally (or would) eat statement. Since while preparing I have a choice, I make choices that will work for me (you know how that saying goes). If, on the other hand I am thrust into a situation where need outweighs choices - anything is on the table. I don't store the meat from small rodents, but if there is a need, it'll be on the menu.

I agree with storing what you eat... but if I see a bargain on something I haven't eaten before I'll at least give it a try.. it's how I've found quite a few things that I'm quite fond of!!!..... worst case scenario I can barter with it if I don't like it with some poor starving soul who didn't have the foresight to prepare.

We don't store much as we don't plan to stick around. We have a stock, but it will only last so long and we can only carry so much. But as for your question, I buy things that are on sale as long as I know David will eat it. He eats everything, LOL. SO...I buy things everyday that I personally won't eat but in a survival situation, I guess I would.

as i mentioned a couple of weeks ago after the 2003 blackout i bought a load of beans, still have most of them, eat some here and there but not as much as i should, also some canned meat haven't touched it but it was on sale and not much left, sardines the same way, my rice and spices go quick so does, my pancake mix, come to think of it i bought a buttload of flour that i don't use either

Frankly, if something serious were to happen...a really large event...so many folks would be fleeing for who knows where. Get this, there are little stores in each one of those houses stocked with all kinds of goodies.

Me with a small group standing outside of house: Knock, Knock.
Turning to address group: "It doesn't look like anyone is home."
Me shouting: "Can we borrow some survival supplies?"
Turning to address group: "I heard a definite yes. Hand me the door buster...please."

We generally have stuff we all like. But when there is a sale, wife does by "different" stuff, that perhaps only is a favorite of one. In a crisis, as long as it is edible it will do for us. I think it would be better to have alot of edibles that are not necessarily favorites than it would be to have a little bit of only favorites.

Well, I've taken to storing the things that I like, and I've learned to make things that I like from what I have stored. I do rotate those and consume them in rotation, and I buy them when they are on sale... or if I need them, I buy them when they are not on sale.
I try new stuff, some on sale and some not on sale, and if it makes the cut, it goes into the rotation.
Gotta try new stuff. There are so many things that I have not tried and I'm sure I'll like a lot of them, dislike some of them, and use almost everything in a pinch.
I wonder if I answered the original question or if I got lost someplace in the thread?

I ran into this a couple weeks ago with some Starkist Tuna Creations...It was on sale ($1.29, normally $2.29) but I had never tried them before. (Sweet & spicy - Darn good right out of the bag or add rice, packable too). They were all out when I went back. Still looking for a similar deal on them now.

My point is, buy what you like, but be sure to try some new things out now and then.

I'm going to go by memory on this but I think Colonial Americans kept a pot of food on the fire most of the time and simply added to it. Since they didn't have any form of refrigeration the best way to keep left overs was to keep them hot. I think it was called a hotchpot, which we know today as hodgepodge. I'll see if I can find a source for this.

The purpose of bringing it up is because it's another way of stretching food out. Instead of cooking separate meals, only one meal is "cooked" and kept hot then additional items are added to it.

Hey Rick, I really like that idea about food always ready. I am sure they had alot of firewood to keep the fire going. We have more options now. I would still be scared to running out of sources to keep the fire always lit. Certainly something to think about.

"store what you eat, eat what you store" can mean different things.

It can mean storing things that you like to eat.
It also can mean learning how to eat things that are easily stored.

So, if you find something that looks good to store, but maybe not great to eat. Buy it, and see what you can do to it to make it better. Then maybe store other things with it, that make it edible. And, cook it regularly to gain experience with it.

We eat everything we store regularly.
From wheat to tooth paste it gets used / rotated.

Tuna, Spam, corned beef -n- hash, etc. We eat it and rotate.

If we don't like it we don't buy it.

Well Guys, I realy liked the Zatarins Rice Mixes, added chicken and sausage, delicious. The sauce was used with left over pot roast enchiladas topped with cheese. Now I can kick myself for not buying more:brickwall:, The cans of sauce were 3 for 1 and not due to expire till Oct of 2110. Now they are 1.29 each what is up with that! Anyway, I will send samples to everyone. :whistling: Mary
