Does freedom of the press only apply when it is convenient or when it's something you agree with? Were it I that had to make the decision, I would not have published them. However, I do support his right to do so.

No question. They had the First Amendment Right to publish the photos.
However, a decent man would have considered the fact that a family had just made a devastating sacrifice to our nation. He could have given up something relatively insignificant to everyone but the family in return.
And that's why I didn't say Curley was a criminal. He's not. He's just an a$$hole.

Not sure how the whole embedding a reporter into a combat unit works, however, some type of release forms should have been signed by all. I also think that reporters should be forced to show a bit of discression in situations like this. I agree that he did nothing illegal but he did show a total lack of respect and compassion. So to label him as an a$$hole is perfect.

Legal or Illegal, that PIG has the moral responsibility to consider the dignity of the serviceman and the feeling of the family. He proves that he is morally bankrupt and not worthy of any respect. I would hope that if he or any other member of his staff is embedded again, that they be treated with a similar amount of respect by the grunts (that term is used with affection). In case I did not make my feelings clear, he would have to go a long way to be a maggot from the bottom of the trash can! Other than that , the puke can hide behind his First Amendment Rights that real men and women have secured for him
Thanks, Pal. You explained it better than I did.

I wonder what his combat survival skills are like? Because if he goes out in the field again I bet he won't have many friends.

Here is a photo of this flotsom from the bottom of a public latrine, also known as Thomas Curley. I find it useful to be able to visual what a snake looks like so that I can avoid them/it. I guess I have not been very successful in hiding my contempt for this freedom sucking, coward that is alledgedly a man.
Your lack of compassion and common sense in choosing to put this image of their maimed and stricken child on the front page of multiple newspapers is appalling. http://blog.taragana.com/n/ap-picture-of-mortally-wounded-soldier-sparks-debate-over-duty-and-taste-160164/

Thse people are lying sacks of manure.
"John Daniszewski, AP senior managing editor, said he respected Gates’ view but that sometimes the government and press have different perspectives.
“We thought that the image told a story of sacrifice; it told a story of bravery,” Daniszewski said. “We felt that the picture told a story that people needed to see and be aware of.”
They did it for rating only. And it should also be noted a commonly held gentlemans agreement with embedded journalists is that wounded and dead not be photographed. So much for their integrity. They are certainly not worthy of trust

The unfortunate, or fortunate (depending how you look at it) thing about slime like this , is that they do work for (notice I did not say represent) our free press. So, all they need to do is apply again for an embedding slot and they will get it. HOWEVER I would bet money that their military hosts will treat them in the manner they deserve. As Untrustworthy, scum sucking, ratings chasing slugs. And believe me, their lives will be extremely uncomfortable.

I just talked to the father of one of that marines friends (he works here at the company I consult for), who is in country and was on that convoy. He was talking to his parents on an Instant messenger and this was brought up. They/ he (the marine) just found out about the picture. The unit members are furious and are refusing to take any embedded reporters with them into the field. It was inferred that the reporter is no longer welcome to share bunks or food with real men (the marines words). I am glad they are dispensing their own justice.
Perhaps someone could arrange a brief meeting between Thomas Curley and a small contingent representative of the US Marine Corps. Mr. Curley could explain his 1st Amendment rights and the Marines, in turn, could give a brief demonstration of some of their methodology used in defending those rights for him. Know what I mean?

From what I am gathering from my co worker, the marines are making sure that Mr.Curleys field representative is getting just such a demonstration. Field conditions are tough enough, imagine if you are also being shunned by the other folks (only left over food, left over water etc and being actively scorned by them . I think they are getting the message :)

Good! They deserve everything they get for such a despicable disregard for the feelings of this young man's family, fellow Marines and the general public.
We all know reporting the war is sanitised and it's for these very reasons There's a line between reporting the truth and sensationalism and this paper just crossed it:smash:.
I haven't posted much on this because I don't see it the same as the rest of you. That probably speaks to my lack of military service and my absence of combat experience. I'm probably going to get in trouble but that's never stopped me before, I guess.
There are two reasons I would agree with NOT printing the picture. The dignity of the Marine and the wishes of the family...in that order. I don't think either require an explanation.
However, Winnie is correct that all the American public sees is a sanitized view of combat. Many think it's just the enemy that pays a terrible price.
Only recently were photographs permitted to be printed of flag draped American coffins. Frankly, I don't see any of these photographs as exploitation. I see them as horribly grim reminders of the true cost of war. I know that every photograph represents lost dreams and the loss of a father, husband, son or brother and similar relationships for our female warriors. I know there are now voids within families that will never be filled and wounds that will never heal.
It does not matter to me if the photo is of a lost son on the battlefield of Antietam, Flanders Field, Iwo Jima or Kabul. The loss represents a debt to me I can never repay. I see it, quite frankly, as a very sacred thing.
Perhaps this particular photo was the wrong one to print. Perhaps it was too personal. I've seen it. But I have to tell you, it told a very powerful story to me. I hope that was the goal of those who chose to run with it. There was a strong message for anyone that chose to actually "see" the photo.
To those of you that have served, I can certainly respect your feelings and attempt to understand your reasoning. I can't know the camaraderie you experienced but I can understand its presence. I don't see anyone condemning photos of dead and dying soldiers of earlier conflicts but I do sense an unrelenting anger over this one. Perhaps, this conflict is too personal for many of you.
I do think some self restraint must be used in what photos are displayed. Some certainly violate common sense and the personal dignity of a soldier. Perhaps this was one. The footage of the lost Delta men in Somalia come to mind. Horrible thing. But somewhere in the national conscience there must be room for the stark realities that exist. We have to understand the price someone else has to pay for what we agree to. Otherwise, what's the point? The image that keeps coming to mind are of proper ladies, with handkerchiefs to their face, filing past piles of corpses crying, "We didn't know." We should know. We should always know...and never forget.
Anyway, that's my thoughts for whatever they might be worth.

Rick, I understand what you are saying, but I have to somewhat dis-agree.
(And for the record, I have never served in the military.)
To me, it is an insult to those who fight our battles. I agree that we need to think about what they do for us, but these types of pictures are not needed. I think anyone with a brain should know that war is hell, without being shown a picture. I mean, dang.....we don't need to see a video of someone being raped, to know that rape is bad.

"I agree our public does see a sanitized version of war. And I for one am thankful for that. There is no purpose to showing the blood and gore to the general public. To me it would be like showing the carnage of the many fatal vehicle accidents in the United State (and those fatalities exceed or KIA in war on an annual basis). To show a human being shredded and bleeding is despicable no matter the context. It strips that last vestige of human dignity. And this type of photo does not need to be displayed where a parent, loved one or friend can see the horrific injury and pain that their loved one suffered."
Only recently were photographs permitted to be printed of flag draped American coffins. Frankly, I don't see any of these photographs as exploitation. The flagged draped coffins are a dignified reminder of the costs of armed conflict. To me, the key is dignified.
It does not matter to me if the photo is of a lost son on the battlefield of Antietam, Flanders Field, Iwo Jima or Kabul. The loss represents a debt to me I can never repay. I see it, quite frankly, as a very sacred thing.

To me, it is very personal. It is absolutely the wrong one to show, just like the internet videos that show the pieces of bodies of suicide bombers. Public displays of death and suffering serve no purpose other than to horrify or inflame passions.
I have condemned this type of activity in all available forums since I served in the Vietnam conflict to present. Along with other professional military folks. Who have and are protesting this type of shameful display, past and present.
I do think some self restraint must be used in what photos are displayed. Some certainly violate common sense and the personal dignity of a soldier. Perhaps this was one. That footage was another example of shocking, ratings oriented journalism. We can convey the cost of war in printed media. Graphic pictures have no place in public media. A good rule of thumb is, would they be appropriate for the casualties family member to see?
Anyway, that's my thoughts for whatever they might be worth.
Your thoughts are worthwhile. Every citizen has to express their opinions

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/14/business/media/14survey.html
By RICHARD PREZ-PEA
Published: September 13, 2009
Trust in news media has reached a new low, with record numbers of Americans saying reporting is inaccurate, biased and shaped by special interests, according to a survey set to be released Monday.
The survey of 1,506 people interviewed in July by the Pew Research Center showed that self-described Republicans continued to take the dimmest view of news organizations, but discontent among Democrats was catching up.
On crucial measures of credibility, faith in news media eroded from the 1980s to the 90s, then held fairly steady for several years, according to Pew surveys that have asked some of the same questions for more than two decades. But in the two years since the last survey, those views became markedly more negative.
In this years survey, 63 percent of respondents said news articles were often inaccurate and only 29 percent said the media generally get the facts straight the worst marks Pew has recorded compared with 53 percent and 39 percent in 2007.
Seventy-four percent said news organizations favored one side or another in reporting on political and social issues, and the same percentage said the media were often influenced by powerful interests. Those, too, are the worst marks recorded in Pew surveys.
Negative opinions grew since 2007 among both major parties, but significantly more so among Democrats. The percentage of Democrats calling the media inaccurate rose to 59, from 43; the percentage who said the media took sides rose to 67, from 54.
Views of some specific news organizations split sharply along partisan lines, with differences between Republicans and Democrats often approaching 30 percentage points. Asked about CNN, MSNBC or network television news, Democrats were much more likely than Republicans to rate them favorably, and Republicans were much more likely than Democrats to see them unfavorably. Fox News was seen much more positively by Republicans, and more negatively by Democrats.
That's an interesting poll. The results are not surprising but should be alarming to everyone. A newspaper's job it "to raise hell" according to James Bellows so controversial articles should be part and parcel of the daily fare. That they take one side or the other should be not only expected but called for by the readership, IMHO. If a particular newspaper doesn't print "your kind of news" then find one that does. That's a tradition that goes back to the New England Courant in the early 1700s. It's what helps keep America...America.

If it is getting to the point that the majority or a significant number of citizens do not trust their media to report accurately , there is a big problem. I would be interested if they could break this down to general poilitical view points to see if it is across the spectrum, or one "side" or the other.
