But (same song, second verse here) I'm still bound by the ban on vacation at work until spring unless its a short stint that is easy for me to get to. I only have 8 acres to hunt and I am beside a 50 acre field of sweet peas. think about it for a second.....270 at 150yds. or .38 at 20 yds. it is plenty....Down here in the woods you can't see 5 ft. It is a whole nother ball game...

I'm not a deer hunter so bare with me for a moment. Since .38 is large enough to hunt deer with, at close range of course, then I have to assume that .45 and .357 is more than adequate. Are you targeting behind the right front shoulder like you otherwise would or are you going for a head shot?

As I said, it's shotgun only here in Indiana. You can carry a sidearm but only if you have a CCW. The fields are wide open for the most part and there isn't anything to stop a rifle except the next farm house.

Yes Rick the shot would need to be for me inside of 25 yds. and I would have to have a clear shot at the heart or maybe a neck shot. I won't pull the trigger if I am not sure it is a clean shot. .38 is plenty at that range as is .375 and definately .45. for whitetail. Since I am on private property I can carry the pistol iin a holster with my hunting liscence CCW is not required.

When I lived in that kind of terrain the only thing I used was a shotgun Rick. The vegetation is so thick that you couldn't see a farm house 25 yards away. A rifle was useless unless you were sitting on a Clearcut. A .22 will bring a deer down if you shoot it in the right place.Buuut the chances are that the vast majority of hunters are not that good under "pressure" or being that excited to see one. I knew oldtimers that when it was allowed, only used the .22 to hunt "docile" game critters. The shotguns were reserved for birds and "dangerous" game(Hogs and Bears). That was the only firearms they used, they grew up in the Depression, and that was all they NEEDED to hunt.

Rifles are used in open areas here as well. By placing yourself high above the ground the trajectory will be stopped by the ground due to the angle. I suspect there is another reason why rifles are not allowed in your state.

Try checking around Tallulah Falls area there are a WHOLE bunch of places around there... or at least there were. It's named after an Indian Romeo and Juliet story. Tallulah was a princess forbidden to marry her love,so she jumped off the cliff there.

Though I have never been to it, there is Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge. It is right outside of Dahlonega (the first gold rush in the US). Miles of trails where you can hook up to the Appalachain Trail. And for something different, a hike-in lodge. http://www.gastateparks.org/info/amicalola/

Tallulah Gorge State Park is also a very nice place to visit. http://www.gastateparks.org/net/go/parks.aspx?LocationID=46&s=0.0.1.5 Though I have never camped there either. Right down the road, is a restraunt called the Dillard House which is absolutely wonderful, costs about $25 a person though.

Right down the road from Tallulah Gorge is Black Rock Mountain State Park. http://ngeorgia.com/ang/Black_Rock_Mountain_State_Park I have only drove through this one.

Watson Mill Bridge State Park is right down the road from me. http://www.gastateparks.org/net/go/parks.aspx?LocationID=101&s=0.0.1.5 I posted some pictures of a short hike I did there here: http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6285&highlight=watson This park is a little small if you ask me, but not very busy. There isn't a large town for miles. The closest town consists of a stoplight, gas stations, and small stores. I plan on camping here with some friends soon.

Both of the first two I have been to but almost 30 years ago. Dahlonega area you can find Gold, Rubies, and Garnets. At Tallulah Gorge (if you still can) you can go to the bottom and there's a "sliding rock" if it's still warm enough to swim. REAL STEEP trail though 30º slope or thereabouts,in some places. 'Course that was 30 years ago and they've surely made changes. Tallulah is also pretty close to the NC border where the "Foxfire books" were conceived. Panther Creek trail isn't too far away, I helped build it one summer (1977) when I was in YCC(that's Youth Conservation Corps). Be sure to have a flashlight on you, it gets dark FAST in those lower areas.

From the Tallulah Gorge State Park site: "NOTICE: Due to access restrictions on private property, the original Sliding Rock Trail is closed. Sliding Rock pool is accessed by hiking the Hurricane Falls staircase. GORGE FLOOR PERMIT REQUIRED."

I have been trying to get some more of my friends to go back with me to Tallulah Gorge and Panther Creek. If and when I do, I'll post some pictures to help decide. Like Poco stated, Tallulah Gorge can be hard on you if you're not in shape. When I went 2 years ago, you were walking down steps on the side of gorge and in some places the gorge is over 1000ft deep.

I might be in on this. I have been to Amicalola Falls State Park. My brother calls it Anna Nicole Smith State Park. LOL

If we are going to do mountains. I used to do camping trips with another website I an admin at and we usually went to a place in KY called Danielle Boone National Forest. We went Memorial Day for the three day weekend. I would leave S. FL Thursday and come Monday. The nice things it was still pretty cool temperature wise in the mountains there.

I don't know if N. GA stays as cool round that time of year. My brother lives in Woodstock, GA. So I would probably just make it a week vacation. If you guys do it in N. Ga.

In FL I'd probably make a meet and greet. If it doesn't interfere with a hunting date. I camp and hunt opening week on down here. Like 98 degrees with about the same in humidity. You get out of your truck into water and get out of the water when you get back in your truck. So, I can do hot and swamp... oh, and we got a few bugs down here as well... Skeeters that I guarantee break the Bug Tamers guarantee...

But, even Florida boys that come down for the early hunt opening down here walk out and say, "Y'all can have this sh1t!!!".

RX, I looked over your links, beautiful country and good locations for our members I would think. I was wondering do we want primitive camping or do some have RV's? I was gonna do some research first. The idea was to select one or more location in each state in the region, then poll the locations.

Might be best to start a new thread on that. Kind of an apples - oranges sort of thing. As a thought......start a thread where all folks that are probably going to attend pick a place they are familiar with and give a brief review. After that is done, then just have the potential attendees vote. Might be best to have a date in mind first, as that may be limiting in some cases.
