View Full Version : Wilderness Living- An Open Invitation

Attention, I have a 12' x 16' log cabin, in the mountains of Montana (just north of Yellowstone Park) that has a wood stove, cot, propane stove, well, and no electricity available for people looking for a long-term "wilderness experience". I am willing to trade FREE ROOM and BOARD (all the elk and deer you stand to eat) for just 8 hours of manual labor a day.

The work is very simple, just feeding and watering sled dogs, general dog yard maintence (fixing fences, picking up poop, buildling dog houses etc..) cutting and splitting firewood, butchering wild game, killing weeds and other landscaping projects. You will be taught how to handle chainsaw,axe, maul, ATV, snow machine, dog-team, canoe & raft, firearms, and how to cut and wrap meat. This a great experience for people looking to learn alot about wilderness travel and living. A 6 month commitment is required. Please PM me if your interested.

It is a great deal! But, its amazing how difficult it is to find people to take me up on it.

Jason - that's a pretty cool offer. I'd be curious to know if you get any takers based on the number of people that come here looking for exactly that. I suppose this is one way to find out if they're serious. Of course it would be nice for you to have an "ranch hand" around the place too.

I would sure like to learn proper game meat care and dog sledding. I can do the rest well not the canoe and rafting. Would be a nice change of pace to live like that for a 6 month stint. Man I wish I was single.

I can get a double bed, or a second cot. A married couple could easily share the cabin.

Well she is 7 weeks prego so............that would not be very pleasant. Then with a newborn..........yeah that would also be bad.

Jason - if you get any takers I'd love to see a kind of journal from both you and your guest to document the experience. It would surely make for some great reading. Probably be real educational for others as well.

It started out with organic farms but these days all kinds of homestead get listings in there. I know several people who are listed as "hosts" and nobody of them had any bad experiences. I've wwoofed myself and it's one of the best ways to pick up all kinds of skills. You will get people, guaranteed.

man that is an amazing offer jason. like others have said if i was single i would jump on that...im still gonna tell my fiance about your offer cause she just might want to do it. the both of us just feel out of place here in so-cal. we were even looking for houses and cabins in alaska, idaho and montana.

You would not believe how often i hear that. In all seriousness, Is it possible to get a 6 month visa or something like that, so i could do it from canada? I'd like to, but um, I don't know if its possible to stay in the US that long.

2. There is no way, married or not, I'd go. Uh, no, thanks. Not my cup of tea. Not into that whole off grid thingie.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the PM's! This is a serious offer. I will be getting back to everyone who PM'd me soon. First, however I have to devise a basic questionaire for interested persons, and write a basic description of the job/cabin and location.

My goal for providing this opportunity is to make better use of my time, and I realized yesterday after spending an hour discussing with an interested person, then having them decline, that just trying to locate the right person can be a big waste of time. So, I want to streamline the process to screen people and weed them out in an efficent manner as possible.

Thanks again for the responses, and I'll be trying to get back to folks by this evening

Most that are looking for a way to "get away from civilization" have a romanticized notion of what it really is. Too much television and movies in my opinion. Many, when they find out that remote living requires work - more work than they ever had to put in in their 9 to 5 grind that they are seeking to escape. More work than the young person could have imagined that is trying to avoid the "tyranny of the man". More work than they have ever thought about doing, much less having done it. The oft romanticized fascination of living off grid is, in realty most times a desire to live with fewer expenses. Once their eyes are opened to reality they kind of fade away. Maybe it's a product of the "I want it now" society. Maybe it's the product of a lazy society. Maybe it's something else. Maybe that's why fewer and fewer people in today's society do it.

I really wouldn't mind it...Here comes that BIG word...IF I could afford it. That lifestyle is what Dot and I really want, for ourselves. Without even talking to Hope or WW I know it is more than the cost of 2 new houses in the Suburbs. I have no Illusion of how much work would be involved or the cost of equipment that would be necessary to live "Out There".
My Other "IF"... If we didn't have two young boys with no clue As to how to go about their education "Out There".
I don't see it as less expensive but more expensive. Not less labor intensive but more labor intensive. But Still.... Maybe I am a romantic, I just think of that old saying. "Better to have loved and Lost, than to have never loved at all"

You should post it on Sled Dog Central's classifieds. That's where we always get our handlers from. And yes, people can get VISAs for this type of work. We have had several handlers from other countries. They are normally really fun.
