We have a small house and yard. While its not quite the same as sitting in the woods watching the wildlife, we do get our fair share of little critters. Here are a few from this morning.

The yard is small, but weve planted it to attract humming birds and butterflies.

Crash, It may not be the same, but the only real difference is scale. You have more plants and critters in your back yard, then most people would notice, during a hike in the "woods".

Crash, what are the names of the bushes you've planted to attract hummingbirds and butterflies? I've asked around locally (here) and everyone has a different recommendation. A few years back, I put out nectar and couldn't keep the hummingbirds away. Last couple of years - nothing.

Ken - The caterpillars love mint but if you put it out be sure to containerize it. Anything in the mint family is pretty invasive. The caterpillars will eat the mint, however.

As for nectar, I put out 6 feeders for hummingbirds. Every week I clean them with bleach to kill any bacteria inside the feeders. Then I simple add sugar and water. I use 2/3 cups of plain sugar to a large feeder that looks exactly like this...

The birds bring the bacteria in on their beaks and infect the feeder as they feed so, depending on the temps and the amount of sun, you probably don't want to go more than a week without cleaning them. Don't use any type of soap to clean the feeders. The birds will smell/taste the the soap and abandon the feeder.

It's quite possible that bees will find at least one of the feeders. Around here it's generally yellow jackets. Let them have it. They typically only choose one feeder and you will never dissuade them no matter what you do. So I just let them have one and feed the hummers out of the other five.

Rick, that is the very same feeder (Home Depot) and formula I use. I have my feeders hanging about 15' high suspended on cables from my trees. I even put a bit of grease on the cable way up above the feeders to stop ants from attacking the nectar.

I clean each week pretty much the way you do.

I've changed nothing, but the hummingbirds never came back after the first year.

They might be using them as secondary feeders. After I put up my feeders several years ago my neighbor came stomping across the street to tell me I had "stolen" "his" hummers. I told him I offered better service at a lower price and he'd just have to live with it. It's called free enterprise.

By the way, Crash, I forgot to mention..that camera does an excellent job of capturing detail. Very nice job. Thanks for sharing that with us.

Hummers are actually carnivorous. Their main diet is spiders and insects. So you need that environment as well. They just use the high octane stuff to fuel their quest for meat. Vodka will just attract the wrong hummingbird crowd. I'd stick with wine.

You know Crash you really are good at the photo thingy, makes my northern garden look pretty bland. Especially at the moment. It's in the process of being cleared and tidied ready for winter.
Ah well, there's always next spring to look forward to!

Crash I think Gut shot got it right a pine snake would be more of a gray brown color. It really looks like a juvie Gray Rat Snake, Your camera enlarges it so much that it is kinda' hard to tell scale of the critter. If you don't mind catching it (just pin the head and grab right behind the jaws) check the belly pattern, that would be the true indicator if we gussed right. Remember the indian corn pattern on the one we caught at jamboree? I've noticed that there are regional color variations,and down your way it is a much brighter and clearer patterning,whereas the one we caught in Indiana was darker more indistinct coloration. But they were/are the same species. Remember the only North American poisonous snake with round pupils is the coral snake(red touch yellow kill a fellow,red touch black friend of Jack. the other two in your area with R/Y/B coloring EAT other snakes the Scarlet snake and the Scarlet King Snake). Cat eyed pupils however LEAVE IT ALONE as it will be a Pit Viper. Also in your area the Pit Vipers will have a dark stripe transversing the eye. There are one or two that have a head shape that have an almost arrowhead shape like the Pit Vipers.Which is why I described the eye patterning.

Yep Crash that's a juvie Gray Rat snake for sure!! I looked at the picture between the two head shots and you can see the Indian Corn patterning on the belly.

After posing for the pics he got bored and slithered deeper into the fire bush. It was probably about 10 to 12 inches long and a little thinner than a pencil.

You were probably posting as I re-examined the pics and edited my post. Probably looking for an easy meal out of all those insects you are attracting!!! Later it will move onto mice and eventually Rats.He'll help keep your yard (and home) rodent free if he sticks around.
