This product has many good reviews on this website. Basically, they say: it does exactly what it suppossed to do, but not more. And it appears pretty inexpensive. I have no experience with Inverters, so please comment on: if this manufacturer/model is good and/or the price for a small unit like this is good.

That seems like a pretty good deal. I haven't seen them in retail stores for much less that around $25.00, but then again I've had one for about 15 years, so I haven't really been price shopping.

This looks like enough to run a computer, or a couple of regular light bulbs. Pretty inexpensive, so definitely worth an experiment to see how it performs! Keep us posted if you get one.

Yes. 200W is enough too run low end computers. Im not too familiar with DC to AC inverters though.

I bought one, arrived in 4 days. Works just like it was supposed to, powered a laptop with ease. Compact: 5x2x3 inches easily fits in glove box. Only downside I can see, cord not much longer then 1 ft, but that'll work. I did NOT test it for a long period of time, but see no reason why it wouldn't be fine. Sale ended and now retailsfor $25. If/when sale returns I'll buy a second as back-up and will post to this thread.

Finally: FYI reminder, if grid goes down, this will power your lap but that doesn't mean Internet access. You still need your router, etc to have power and your ISP (phone company, cable company, etc) needs to be online too.

Yes. 200W is enough too run low end computers. Im not too familiar with DC to AC inverters though.

Really? Low-end only... that's a bunch of BS:smash:. It will power anything but a dual video card gaming monster. Hard drives use little power...

My desktop has multiple hard drives, core 2 duo, and a non-built in gfx card a 20" LCD, and a 30" LCD monitor... I run 250watts. Without the 30" monitor I am in the 140watt territory which means I could still probably squeak by <200watts with DUAL 20" monitors.

So, if I was a normal user with an 18 or 19" monitor, a single hard drive and a built on video card I would be WELL UNDER 200 watts.

Even your average gamer with a 20" LCD and a good video card you'd be under 200 watts.


Also, what's the point to convert DC to AC just to run lights? Get some good LED lights that run on 12v DC power and don't waste any power converting from DC to AC just to run lights ;)

Power inverters have applications well beyond running lights. I have a 400 watt in one vehicle and a 750 watt in another. I am budgeting for a larger inverter (1500 watt range) in the near future. Out of all of the things I have plugged into one over the years, lights are not on the list.

I also have an inverter in my truck. Just be cautious how you power the inverter. Unless you run directly from the battery you take a chance on toasting your vehicle wiring. And make certain your DC feed is fused.

Good points. Only my 400 watt inverter even has a 12 volt plug in adapter. There is a caution on it to not exceed a 100 (it might say 200) watt load while using it. Anything above that should be connected to the vehicle battery.

I thought I'd share some pics on how I have my inverter set up. It might give you some ideas. As I said above, you want to make certain you don't fry your vehicle wiring so I'm coming directly off the battery to power my inverter.

Here is a pic of what my inverter looks like. It has a positive and negative DC input and a single 115 VAC output. The black cap on the left side is nothing more than a rubber cap that I used to insulate the positive terminal.

This picture shows how I set it up. I took a small extension cord and cut it into two pieces. I took the female end of the cord and attached some small, heavy duty clamps to it. I use the clamps to hook directly to the battery. The female end ensures no bare metal is exposed so I can't accidentally ground or short the leads from the battery. The male end is attached to the inverter DC input posts. To use, just plug the two together.

What makes this setup really nice is the fact I can add an extension cord so I can move the inverter to where I need it. In this case, I use a 25 foot extension cord. The length of cord will be determined by the gauge of wire you use. The smaller the gauge the shorter the cord will need to be.

Here's a close up of the battery clamps. I took a red and black permanent marker and colored the clamps so I know which is positive (red) and which is negative (black). You do NOT want to cross polarity on your inverter.

Just about anything you can plug in at home you can use with the inverter. Battery charger, recharge a cell phone, power tools. It's a handy little gizmo.

1) With your set-up (direct to battery) can I remove the battery from the car, take it inside and use it w/ the inverter (just like a D cell in a flashlight), or is the car (starter, etc) required?
2) If yes, about how long will the battery last (depends on size of inverter and what's plugged-in I guess.) So assume: your inverter, at full power/full usage, how long?

During a power outtage I brought a battery inside hooked to a 750 B&D inverter and powered my desktop, router, the whole nine. I thought it was neat I was on the internet the whole evening. PC's run easily on an inverter. A desktop PC is actually a 12 volt system it converts the 110v using it's power pack.

1. Sure you could. I don't know how long the battery would last, though. 100-200 watts is a pretty strong pull on a battery.

2. I really don't know the answer. I always have the truck running when I use it. Too afraid of running the battery down. But you are right, it would depend on the amp/hour rating of your battery, and the device you are running. To some degree the temperature and the wire gauge involved but for the purpose of your question we will ignore those.

Rather than how long will the battery last, you probably want to know how long your can run item X. Every 100 watts of the inverter load requires about 10 DC amp hours from the battery.

You can calculate your load run time by multiplying the time by the watts to reach the amp/hours. For example: 8 hours X 40 watts = 320 amp/hours. OR 3 hours X 100 = 300 amp/hours.

Most vehicle batteries are in the 700-800 amp/hour range so if you run a 100 watt drill for an hour you would use up less than half the battery assuming it was fully charged and was fairly new. I don't know if you'll have enough reserve left to start your vehicle. Quite a few variables there as well.

Since there are so many variables that can impact how long (temp., cable gauge, age of battery, starting charge) for the small amount of gas required to idle the engine I just leave it running.

Good point Rick, the battery I was using was "special" I work in the industrial battery industry. Another time one of our plants was out of power. We were able to continue shipping from this dist. center using our "scrap" batteries and inverters to run the pc's and lights. This was done over the course of 2 days. I'll have to ask the manager there how the batteries held up.

TM - You could certainly hook two or more batteries in series. That would increase your amps and give you more time. I think if I were going to do something like that I'd use deep cycle batteries though.

Thank you both Rick & Cowboysurvival. I was thinking about buying an extra car battery as backup and if needed, switch out a fully charged one to run a few things inside the house. Now, I'm going to run some numbers and do more research... but so far, all of this is really great for my needs and family.

I use a deep cycle surrette 12 volt 357amh battery. These are the ones you can run a whole house off of. I have an exceltech inverter. I can run my computer, the frig and a microwave on this system. In a sthtf sotuation add a small generator ans a solar panel and you have a small power plant.

I saw an article in Backwoodsman magazine where the guy put a bank of deep cycle marine batteries in the bed of his truck under the tool box behind the cab. He ran cables from the alternator to the tool box where he had a switch to disconnect the cables. When he was driving he would turn the switch on and charge the batteries. When he stopped he would turn the switch off. This prevented his truck battery from being discharged.

He had a large inverter hooked to the batteries and the inverter supplied a receptacle he installed in the side of the tool box.

I keep saying I am going to do this as I have several marine batteries and the inverter already. I was just waiting on my buddy who works on marine electronics to get me the conductors to run from the engine compartment to the Bed of my truck.

IMHO opinion, anything under 750watts is too small. My 750 quit on me. I'll be looking for a larger unit and yes as always i will try to fix my old one. Should've never loaned it out!!!!

I bumped the thread, because it is useful to me as I am working on installing an invertor system on my boat. I plan to add what i learn on this thread to keep the useful stuff in one place. Some of us can remember what we discussed in 2009.

I am just surprised due to me never being able to get any info when I do a search. I am sort of shocked that it works for anyone else.

It has a lot to do with how you hold your mouth.

One thing I would have changed on my solar unit is an AGM battery instead of a deep cycle marine battery. They are more expensive but there are distinct advantages to them such as lasting longer.
