View Full Version : I need fishing line storage ideas.

I have some 80 lb line and was looking for a way to minimize a little for my kit.

I tried an old dental floss container. That didn't work out. I like the idea of having the floss cutter available.

What do you use? Any ideas for a way to spool the line into the dental floss container?

I use a sewing bobbin. Works pretty good.

You may have to take the floss container apart and then tape it back together. I stored line on a small piece of cardboard and wrapped the line around it. Cut a slit in the cardboard to wedge the end of the line into. 80 lb. test is pretty stiff.

Reb, I've used a bobbin as well. I've also wrapped it around a nail. You can also fashion some nifty shaped holders by bending a metal coat hanger with a pair of needle nose pliers to form a double "U" shape at each end.

Thanks Ken for the input. Since the information is available, I may as well try for the "best" solution. I've been racking my brain for an idea that would be perfect.

Rebel, you can even bend a coat hanger into the rough shape of an old wooden handline - as small as you need to fit in your kit.

Imagine an "M" on top of an upside-down "M"........

It was my brother,and he will be released from the marines this November,because his neck bone is not healing around the metal they reapired it with,they will do more surgery to add more metal,and then release him on full disability.

I am not speaking to him at this point,because he took his father (yea mine too) over to my sons house a few weeks ago without asking my son if it as ok,and my kids do not wish to see that freak.

I use a tool and die container with the line wrapped on the outside. Inside is hooks weights and other goodies. there is lots of 'em on youtube.

Rebel, I'm not sure how much 80 pound test line you could put in a
dental floss container or a bobbin. Why not just buy the smallest spool
of line that you can find?

The sewing machine spools are found in the sewing and crafts sections of Walmart. If you want a built in cutter for the line just cut a notch in the rim of the spool.

I also find that the braids are more suitable for use in a bob. Monofilament breaks down over time and takes a coiled set.

I bet a film canister (if they still sell them) would work too. I've stored smaller strength line for several years and it worked fine as long as it stays dry and out of the sun. They also sell small 100 yd spools at WallyWorld.

Exactly it is SPIDERWIRE FUSION - oops! it is not really a braid rather fused microfilament. I am still recommending a braid would be better. Looks like I will need to pick some up. I have some 300lb. stuff I use for bowfishing But I think for my fishing kit I would rather have about 10 to 15 lb braid. Some of 300lb stuff would be cordage to have.

All i carry in my kit is either 65lb test or 80lb test Spiderwire. I use sewing bobbins for shorter lengths and a mini fly fishing reel for longer lengths

Rebel - As Nell said, you can pick them up at Wal Mart. You can get a package of three for some where around $1. I carry 8lb and 20lb test and you can put at least 3 million miles of 20lb test on a bobbin. Well, maybe 2 million but it's a lot I know that.

This is why I've gone to braided line in most of my small kits.

i agree, mono lie remembers the curl of being spooled up for long periods. tight swirls are not good. i often use roots and vines to get rid of the need for fishline. but the "spider wire" braided line is better than mono.

The spiral actually helps. When the fish comes out of the water he spins around like crazy as the spiral uncurls. By the time the line is straight the poor fish is too drunk to fight. Just one more little item in my arsenal. Well, that and spitting in the water.

Thanks for the info everyone. It's been helpful.

I guess the bobbin, container or wrap are the choices.

Now, to decide on the choices and the features of each.

Wrap: flat. A wire, it could be used for other purposes. A magnifying card. A handle.

Bobbin: Small.

Canister: Large. Storage capability.

They all have degree of usability.

As simple as this is...I'm leaning for the wrap method because of it's simplistic and multi-use applicability.

Are there any other ideas about this?

so many time have i collected and saved those "necessary" things just to loose them in a river crossing or to be caught in some other way without them! i found suitable replacements that nature provides anywhere. spooling fishline may save time but that doesnt last. daily use of those items in survival leads to loss and damage. so having stores of fish equipment only helps the road side survivalist adequetly. i would use a drill bit tube so that swirls are not in every inch fo the line. that is my best suggestion; is to store line for a lack of kinks.......

I've done quite a bit of fishing using a bank line and spring branches. The bank lines we would just tie the line to a tree branch and let it dangle down in the water. Fish would hook themselves on the bait and be waiting for us to come around and check. With the spring branches we just set them like a spring snare. The fish will trip the branch, it will get hooked, and the branch will pull them out of the water.

Watch your state laws regarding the above. From memory and without looking it up Indiana allows 3 bank lines to be used.

It use to be done similiar to that in the south. You would stick canes in a steep bank and the fish would hook themselves no trip though. Some call it bushlining. You can use 2 here without a commercial lisensce.

My initial purpose was for a small line storage solution for an altoids tin.
I think the yo-yo reel would be a good idea for my BOB.

Speaking of altoids tins I had the idea this afternoon about painting the outside of the tin black. Then it may be possible to melt a little snow with sunlight. I know our blacktop road does a nice job of melting the snow.

I kind of figured the pen rod wouldn't be much good. Like y'all said a tree limb works.

When I was growing up we used to set trot lines and then check 'em in the morning.

The 80 lb. line is for multi-use. Sewing, snares, lashing and maybe a little fishing. It's a woven design and not very thick. It's also green.

If I could carry that imported spinning real and a collapsable rod ..I would, but I wouldn't bet on it. I would rely on more than one line if I was lucky enough to be on a stream or even better a river....or .. maybe if I am lucky it'll be a Lake!

I would only use my fishing gear if I had to be on the move. If I were able to lock down to one place for a few days I'd go with a fish weir. A little work on the front end but a lot more fish for the work.

Make a finger trap splice in power pro,think chineese finger thingy,insert flourcarbon leader about 3" wrap with thin floss seal with super glue and you are ready to go.

I belive Power Pro has a DIY article,with pictures on line,otherwisae pick up the info from any large tackle dealer handling Power Pro.

I have one set up for both fresh and salt water.

rebel cheaperthandirt.com has "automatic" "yo-yo' reels in their catalog and on their web site. I bought a 12 pack of them on sale a few weeks ago and paid about $ 24.00 for the 12. They are pretty good for small/medium fish. You tie them to a tree limb or what ever set them and when a fish bites the spring retracts the line and hooks the fish.

I have a set-up i'll post a pic of when I can but here's how I made it. I took a empty tube like aleve,advil whatever comes in from a convinence store the kind that comes with 15-20 pills in. Start by spray painting the tube florescent orange. hot melt glued a strip of para cord around tube one wrap. about 1/8 inch from the bottom and 1/8 inch below the cap. That way you can wrap line around it between para cord and it won't slide off. hot melt glue one end of the line to the "tube" inside the paracord then wrap the fishing line snugly around the tube when you get to the end of the line you want to wrap. hot glue the end to the side of or bottom of the tube to help keep in place. then you can put a couple of weights and small/medium hooks inside the tube and screw the cap on. When you gwt ready to use it un-wrap the line tie on a weight and hook. make a "slip knot" in the line loop over the threads of the tube screw the cap back on and the "tube" becomes a float/bobber.

I use the fly ishing reel simply to store my line and reel it back in when i'm done, best use of line for fishin is several trot lines.

If your looking for a way to store a small fishing kit in your BOB, get an old metal shoe polish can and place the line around the inside until you have what you need in there, then take it out and wrap the end around the bundle a couple of time so it won't come apart on you and do the same with a lighter line. In one can you can place several sizes of line, sinkers, hooks and a few lures in 1 metal can. don't forget some flies. My 2 cents
