i need some help with my winter cabin its in a wooded area at the end of my field and would like some advice on how to build one,its somwhere to retreat when the wife starts nagging and the kids get on my nerves ,i dont want a palace just somewhere that draft free and dry im even thinking of having power there toso i can just kick back ans unwind.
Cool.
I love log cabins.
There are different ways to make them, with very simple tools.
If you have some cash, maybe you can look into having logs pre cut and pre dried delivered on site and just assemble.
Many companies offer logs.
I am sure you can find some books about it or online.
good luck :)

Find a copy of " How to Build your HOME in the Woods" by Bradford Angier, to start with. Then buy a few more to study before you even start a log cabin.

Obviouly the key to a well built log cabin is the logs. You can keep them totally round or you can square the top and bottom edges so that they sit as flush on each other as possible. Second is the chinking between the logs. Then how do you want to roof it? Windows? Door/doors? How big do you need it to be? Is there a lumber mill nearby that you can get logs from or have your logs squared at?

You start with logs of course and unless you buy what kind of timber do you have on your property that you plan to use? Need to know that first.

Are you going to build a log cabin from trees that you drop or are you looking to build one with store purchased items? Or from a kit?

Do you have a winter cabin in place already? If you do why not fix it up?
You will learn alot from that experience.....

The way the notches are cut is important. A neighbor had to push the bottom of one log wall back in place. The logs are 13" squared from about 1830. We aren't sure how it slipped off the dry laid stone foundation. It could have been frost heave. When we get a lot of wet weather followed by extreme, cold we have problems.
The contractor thinks frost heave may have disturbed the foundation causing a 15 ft+ section to fall in. This allowed the bottom log to sag loosening the corner and over time the wall worked out about 8" at the bottom. The contractor said the notches were a bit shallow and may have been a contributing factor. If the foundation didn't fail it would have been fine.

If you plan on using that stand of pine trees to build your cabin in that center clearing - by the time you're done your cabin may be in an open field.

I believe the trees should be cut, peeled and left to season for a time. An excellent video on how to build a log cabin is called Alone in the Wilderness. By watching this documentary you should be well on your way.

First thing to do is to determine how big of a cabin you want. 10x10, 10x12, etc. How high you want the side walls, the pitch of the roof, what type of roofing system you will use, etc.
The side walls should be at least 2" higher than your height. So, if you are 6' tall the side walls should be at least 6'2" high. The pitch of the roof should be no less than a 3 - 12 pitch (Must consider snow load).
Now, on to the logs. . . .
10" dia. logs are awfully big for building a small retreat cabin, (A 6 or 7" dia. log is the optimum size for a cabin) and if the trees are 40' tall you could easily cut them in to 10' or 12' sections and get 3 - 4 logs per tree.
As stated earlier, they have to dry or "season" for at least a year before you can begin to build. The best time to cut the trees is in the fall when the moisture content is low. This will also help expedite the drying process. So, if you cut them this fall you could begin to build in the spring of 2011.
You need to learn how to cut proper saddle notches in the corners of the logs and the logs will have to be counter stacked (fat end to narrow end).
These are just a few of the basics to give you some food for thought. . . .

Yeah, I saw that a few years back and it was a real good docu-flick.
I built me a 8x8 out back in 2004 with all 2x4's and 1/2" OSB, trimmed out the inside, have 1x8" swing-out windows with all the luxury of home -electric with TV-DVD, 'frig, carpet, front porch and a 8x8 lean on the back for wood and the 4-wheeler.
This little "Man-Hut" cost me around $600.

How much room do you have?
Seems that you would need to cut down most of your trees to build a cabin of any size.
I guess it would help if we had a little more info on have your looking to do.
I had always wanted a log cabin, myself, even though they are one of the most high cost, high maintenance type of building you can build.
After a long search, of plans, kits, mills etc, we finally decided on a cabin pre-built by the Amish.
Built on their farm and trucked to my site.
Ours is a 26' X 40' w/8 ft porch the length of it.
The prices started a About $15000 US fro a 18 X 30'
I wouldn't guess that y'all have Amish in Wales?

Now that would be my dream come true. I helped two buddies build log cabins back home with a portable sawmill and trees from their lots. It was hard work but a lot of fun. Once you get the hang of it they go up fast. A lot of maintenace with the chinking and stuff but it's worth it.
That is a very nice place. Grand view as well. Looks like you have a couple of squatters on the front porch.

Well , see, there you go.
We now have a size to work with.
40ft trees you should get at least three logs per tree, (dia limitations).
So, are you planning on cutting them down, pealing, doing the corner joints (how?)
Putting it up on blocks, rocks, timbers?
What type of floor?
Shed roof, gable roof, flat roof, lean-to?
Explain your vision.
I had a good idea of what I wanted on our cabin, and as the Amish build them with out any interior work done, just an enclosed building, I drew up a floor plan.
DW says she wanted a bathroom, so when I did my plan, I had some windows moved on one end, so as to wall-up in between the kitchen and bath.
A "wet wall" as it were, not much room for mechanicals in solid walls.
Well, as the Amish do not have indoor plumbing, when I showed them my plan for the kitchen and bath to share a wall, they laughed hard, asking why I would want to eat next to where I got rid of it, if you get my drift. Different culture, we are called "The english"............

I'm sure a log cabin would be quite a bit of work for it's size. I've worked inside many of them, but never helped build them. No matter what kind of cabin you build, you will need to bring the cut trees to the site. You can get someone to log the area with a skidder and other machinery or do it yourself. My experience is that if you hire someone to do it, then you better watch that they don't steal about half your trees. If you do it yourself, you will need a good chainsaw, what we call a stone boat to carry the logs, and a tractor to pull the stone boat. Myself and most people I know prefer the Husqvarna or Jonsered saws, but their are several good manufacturers. The stone boat is made of two logs, about 6-8 ft long, connected by a floor of 1" thick lumber with each end of a chain connected to the front of each log by means of two bolts or pieces of cable. It's a good idea to be able to attach to chain to either end. Do not made the boat so big that you can not manage to move it by hand if necessary. We use cedar because of it's light weight. You need a Kant hook and a couple short boards for ramps to get the logs on the boat easier. Some you will move by hand and others may be too heavy. How wet is the area the tractor will travel? In lower areas, sometimes the tractor will only be able to make a couple passes before it gets stuck. How hilly is the area? Sometimes it can be very dangerous pulling logs on hills. The tractor can flip very quick and kill you very quick. For these two reasons it is advisable to have a long cable and a strong pulley when logs are on hills or difficult to access areas. There are pulleys made for this purpose that you do not have to "thread" the cable. You can even use two pulleys and "snake" the logs out and ,then, be able to drive the tractor downhill or a safer area. It sounds like your trees may all be easy to reach. It sounds as if you live in an area where you are familiar with tractors, what we call a stone boat, Kant hooks, cables and pulleys. If not then be careful.

my cabin is on flat ground ,so no problem with tipping anything over i will be using the winch on the front of my 4x4 and pulling the logs to my clear area ,chain saw no problem my son who does not live at home [24 yo]got husky saw so im using that,im thinking of flat roof sloping at the back i will use 8-4 ply sheets for that and felt over it .
The logs im a bit unsure how to notch to tie together, how do i lay the first on a concrete slab floor, i poured the concrete today 11x11 and this should be ok by the weekend.

Any old log cabins I've seen were just on some big rocks. Just like they do with most old barns. Your concrete isn't any different. If you wanted a little better you could drill though the first couple logs and put some rebar or bolts into the concrete. You'd need a hammerdrill for the concrete. I would get a sawyer to cut the logs flat on two sides and that would give you a good start. You should still use the boat to pull in the logs because it keeps the sand out of the bark. I guess you could debark the logs to get the sand out and not use a boat, but that's harder to do and some sand will get in places. You won't be able to saw for a couple minutes if you try to cut though sand. It makes me groan if my chain barely touches any dirt. If you want to use the chainsaw instead of hiring a portable band saw then I would line each side up ,on the ground, on top of other logs (to keep the chain out of the sand), as if the walls had fell outward. Bungee the logs together as if you were trying to pull the wall tighter together, and cut between the length of the logs so they fit tighter. Measure and count logs because they must be of equal size or height on all sides...lots of measuring and checking so they are equal height on each log. Lots of changing positions of logs. You will need a template cut from plywood to cut the notches so they are all the same....one male and one female. The easiest template would the flat Lincoln log pattern and cut out the edges with the saw and cut out the center with an adze, large chisel, grub hoe or hachet. I think that flat way would hold too much water and cause the corners to rot faster. A "v" shape splicing in the corners would be the next easiest and would drain better. This is why you see fence posts that are sometimes cut at an angle. A pitched roof will drain better, last longer and hold less snow than a flatter roof, but whatever you build, give it a good overhang to keep everything covered and your building from rotting. I'll bet you'll want to hang things on the cabin too and you don't want things to get rained on. You could build a prototype with some 2x2's. Depending on how tight you want your logs, it may be tough on the Husky. It might be necessary to have a model 455 or bigger.....I use Jonsered so I'm not sure about that Husky model number, but bigger would be better. Don't let the chain touch the ground at all, sharpen it regularly with a file, clean the air filter, keep the chain tight, don't run it if the muffler comes off and make sure you use the good Husky oil. Use premium gas without alcohol in it (some don't use premium...some debate on this). This is just my homemade input, you should have plenty of ideas before you start. Be careful about cutting on a ladder or in the air. Watch for those widow-makers. You have an interesting project. Lots of problems too. You must enjoy the work and the experimenting. I'm betting you will be getting pretty good at it when it's done. Keep safe.

I'm no expert on building cabins myself but my wife's grand father seems to be. He is Native American and has built many a cabin for his children, grand children and even some side work (gotta make a living). Most of the ones I've seen or heard that he's built were 16X16 (of course some have been added onto as well). Everything he builds is in multiples of 4, as ply boards come in 4X8 pieces if someone wishes to have flat walls inside or out. There is no power where he is from so these measurements also help to keep the cutting to a minimum and since his english is very limited, he doesn't have to do much math this way either. Most of them have dirt floors and the ground sees enough foot traffic inside that is't packed very hard. He uses larger, heavier logs at the bottom of the walls for a sturdy(er) foundation. He uses 1/2 inch rebar as "bolts" that he drives though predrilled holes in each log, attaching it to the log or ground/concrete below it. He uses a mixture of mud from the area sometimes with concrete or morter as well, to fill the joints between logs. This keeps is very effective in keeping the cabin insulated, warm or cool. They sometimes will use pavers (stones) for a sturdy foundation for their wood/coal burning stoves if there is not a concrete floor. Sometimes even using the stones to cover the entire floor. Cutting the windows and doorways out, creates the shorter logs to use in the gable ends. Right now he is helping us build a cabin on the mountain not far from his summer home. We are using aspen logs. He tells us that it's best to peel the bark from the logs before building, as it (the bark) will end up on the floor of the cabin once it dries and falls off. Some of his roofs are purely a work of art. Some are simply piched roofs and, some have multiple planes with no gables. These, I'm told, are very difficult to build because of the multiple angles/pieces that have to be attached together high in the middle. They tend to get a good amount of snow were they are from so the roofs always have a good pitch to them so as to not cave in from the heavy loads. Our cabin will have an extended or vaulted roof so we can have a "loft" above. It will not be an entire 2nd floor but just enough to have room for the kids to unroll their sleeping bags up there or use it for stoage if we can manage to get away from the kids for a time. I'm sure ours will be added onto later (women always seem to change their minds).

When the time comes to chink it, you can end up with a great result for very little money by mixing wet sawdust (the finer, the better) with carpenter glue (white glue) and adding a drop of linseed oil. You have to test what mixture works best, depends a bit on the sawdust. You want to use a fair bit of glue, otherwise when it dries, the sawdust will flake off again.
If applied to well-seasoned logs, you may not get any cracks in the chinking at all. If you do, buy a bucket of Log Jam or Perma-Chink and thinly apply over the homemade mix. Way, way cheaper than using just professional chinking.

I saw this article in Mother earth news awhile back:
http://www.motherearthnews.com/Modern-Homesteading/1985-07-01/A-Landscape-Log-Cabin.aspx
The guy built a nice cabin out of those landscape timbers you can buy at the home center. Pretty neat idea, but i'd try and find a plant that mills them and get them untreated, I don't think I'd want all that chemical in my air. They are uniform and flat on two sides, so easy to build with. Cheap too. Might be worth a look

It ain't no log cabin but may be an inexpensive, comfortable and mobile option.

With a do it yourself mindset and some scrounging for materials (boat trailer, plywood, kitchen sink from house demolition ect) one might be able to do quite a bit for a reasonable price.
