Im here to learn off you guys everything i need to know while im over in your country hiking the american discovery trail ,im able to look after myself,overhere ,but in your neck of the woods its a different kettle of fish,i know iv made some silly coments like boil your poncho ,and i know i should take things seriously but im a bit of a wind up person and a joker ,no more silly posts off me and i apologise to all if iv given you the wrong impresion .Im hoping to get a chance at hiking the adt sometime in the near future and would like all the advice you guys can give me ,im not able to afford to hike some of the trail and then when winter sets in come back to the uk and wait for spring so im staying on the trail through the winter unless any one advises me not to of course ,i think im pretty well equiped and have a good idea how to take care in bad areasor when its time to call it a day and stopup somewhere to gather my senses, i will post another listing all my geat and if im missing anything please tell me so , i dont want to be without anything i will need thanks WILF123.

Wilf - folks are more than eager to offer advice. Some will be useful while some, not so much. The best thing you can do to find out if you and your gear are up to the task is to get out and use it. As you say, the environments may be different, but familiarity with the skills and equipment needed to accomplish things is the real test.

I have heard of this trail it was a few years back. I think it was still in the planing stage. Back then it only went from delaware to MI. i think.
So is it trail all the way to Cal. or is parts of it walking down the roadway?
I have hiked the AT. twice and the PRT once. I'll have to do this one sometime.

southern adt has a fair bit of roadway but mainly dirt tracks and small town roads northern adt hardly any road walking,iwould like to do the northern route but it has a lot of bears on it and i dont know a lot about avoiding them or what to do if confronted by one , has anyone here been close to one and how was it .

From my experience on your side of the pond over the last few years, the entire 'wildlife experience' will be new to you when you get over here. It's a little different when you know there's critters out there that can actually hurt you, but the reality remains that the elements are a far greater threat than any of the wildlife. Bees kill more people in the US than any other animal and rattlesnakes, wolves, mountain lions, and bears combined kill fewer people per year than cars kill in a couple hours on a typical day.
That said, there's some things to know to avoid unnecessarily dangerous situations. First off, and the thing you're most likely to blow off because of the nature of your travels is don't travel alone. You are far safer traveling with another person than traveling alone. It's more sets of eyes & ears, it's more noise in the bush, and the animals are far less likely to attack two people than one. Of course, I don't always obey this edict myself, but making sure someone knows your itinerary is just common sense and on days that you'll be covering the most dangerous terrain, use some common sense and hike around other people by going in to those areas during weekends.
Carry all your food in a single stuff sack or bear-proof canister. This keeps food smells away from your other gear and makes it less likely you'll forget that Snickers bar and bring it in the tent with you at night. The general rule is to set up your camp in an isosoles triangle. Place your tent in one area, then 50-100m in one direction do all your cooking in that area, and 50-100m in another direction hang your food or store your food canister. You'll want to hang your food at least 15' off the ground, suspended between trees, at least 8' from the closest tree. This can be very difficult to accomplish in some areas, but in bear-dense areas many times the local land management officials will build hang-bars between two trees to accomplish this. If they're available, use them. If they're not, you simply have to do the best you can. Personally, I've gone to using a bear canister when in serious bear country and hang my food when its a lower risk. The canisters are heavy (about 3 pounds), bulky (about the size of a sleeping bag stuffed in it's sack), and only hold about 3-5 days worth of food. That said, the time they save every night by not having to fuss around with ropes and hanging is worth it if you're in the heart of bear country.
Keep a clean camp. That means no dirty dishes lying around when you go to bed, police up all food scraps and keep food trash in your bear canister or food bag. Don't sleep in the same clothes you cooked your food in. This one can be tricky and I'll admit that I've never been perfect at it. Generally in the evenings, after the hike is over, I'm wearing my coldest weather clothes, which is usually what I go to bed with. If you cook in the afternoon rather than the evening, this can mitigate this.
Don't surprise wildlife. Make plenty of noise while hiking. This is particularly important when hiking in close in vegitation. Singing, talking, and occasionally shouting can help prevent an encounter with a startled bear. Whistling, I've heard, is far less effective than talking, as bears are acclimatized to the sound of birds. That said, carrying a loud whistle has it's place in wildlife encounters as well as search and rescue.

great advice endurance thanks ill try to remember it all starting my camp training this weekend get into keeping tidy camp and putting all my food in an old mortat round container and hanging it in the trees im going to put all my gear together this week end and set up a camp i have just enough room in my wood to set the triangle at 50 yards apart and im busy clearing the undergrowth , im also thinking of an alarm system made of 50lb fishing line and cans around my sleeping area close enough to give me time to prepare for whatever is coming my way,im not sure this is the right way to go but im getting a little bit worried and a touch concernd about bears and snakes, the cans wont work with the snakes ,but may help with thebears .im thinking of buying bear spray and hope it works on them .
Wilf - You don't have to worry about bears or mountain lions until you reach Colorado. Even then, the chances of seeing either are pretty remote. You sure won't see either on the first 2/3rds of the trail.
You're biggest challenge will be to stay on trail. Most of it isn't marked and a good many of the locals won't be able to help you. They just aren't tuned into the trail and many don't even know it exists through their town.
The southern trail will certainly be the more scenic since it traverses along the Ohio River through Ohio and Indiana. And yes, you will do road walking on the northern route, too.

You can probably offload some of that. If you have someone that can resupply you with the larger items, like your boots, then they can send a package general delivery to the postmaster in any town. They will hold it for pickup for 30 days.

You will be limited on some of the items that can be shipped to you. For example, fuel or equipment that has contained fuel, such as stoves, cannot be shipped. But clothing, boots or food can all be shipped to you. That will let you skip the parka and spare boots and lighten your load quite a bit. You can carry a fleece jacket to help with cool mornings but you don't have to carry heavy winter garments with you all the way through. Depending on when you start and end this trek you can ship the heavy stuff home then have it shipped back to you once you reach the higher elevations or it turns to fall. Lot's of option here to make it light weight.
Just identify the town where you want to resupply or need a replacement (such as boots) sent.
I can't think of any place you'll need a machete. Virtually all trails and certainly all roads are clear enough that you won't need it. And there are better tools for chopping wood.
You will be able to resupply small items like batteries, fuel, food, personal hygiene items at any town you encounter and, until you get out west, the towns are pretty close together. So American money will be an asset. You'll want to carry smaller denominations such a $5, $10 or $20 bills.
Expect to camp out in farmer's fields and/or privately owned woods quite a bit. It isn't like Scotland. We don't have the right to camp just anywhere you want. You'll have to seek permission or it's considered trespassing.
You really don't want to look like you are on maneuvers with a ton of military gear. That might raise the eyebrow of a LEO or two along the way. Keep your passport handy. Your British accent and the fact that you are trekking across the country will probably get you on your way quicker than a local but expect to be stopped here and there by law enforcement asking what you're doing.
I don't see any way to purify water other than boiling. You have a couple of items like a kfs that I don't know what that is but you'll need to purify water at EVERY source here in the states. Unless you are getting your water from a commercial water source, water hydrant or faucet for example, then consider it tainted and purify it with a filter or tablets. Otherwise you stand an excellent chance of getting sick. Virtually the entire route, certainly the first 2/3rds of the route is agricultural so things like giardhia will be present.

wilf,have yu thought about a sponsorship from one of your local outfitters to help offset your trip??? In exchange for some supplies you could promise to send in reports of your journey back to the sponsoring company as sort of advertisemsnt of their products/service.
I am sure there are more folks across the pond who would be interested in your trip,and may encourage them get out and get active if they read the journal of your trip,get some news coverage of your plans including any sponsor who might take you up on your ideas.It would be good advert and get their name out to more people.

I know Americans usually don't think about this when they travel abroad, but I think it might apply to you as well. You can buy stuff along the way. It would be better for you to have a winter and summer kit, and not carry both. Either buy stuff where you are, or have someone mail it to you.:smash:

Rick i have water pury tabs in my kit ,and am waiting for a batch of ten water pury straws from ebay, kfs is knife,fork spoon ,what other way can you advise me other than my machete for cutting fire wood ,the northern trail of the adt is not as populated as the southern trail and has a few more things to worry about as you may know the trail is in bear country and im a little worried about that fact ,also i have a fear of snakes ,i am unsure about what to do if confronted by either bears or snakes ,any advice please.

my machete for cutting fire wood I would suggest a small folding saw for this task. Fairly light weight, and less effort expended. Also, a hatchet may prove more useful than the machete - but I've never hiked on that trail, so could be wrong.

Thanks crash a folding saw ,i will invest in one of those seen them on ebay and will order one today , and leave my matchete at home even though i will feel that somewhere along the trail i may need it , buying small axe when i get to the trail i dont know if i will be allowed to take one even in my checked luggage.

I just think it's a better tool (for me anyway). After you weigh your load, or more to the point carry your load, there will probably be several items you could to without. For long distance hiking, you may not want one. I think it is more efficient for cutting wood, but to cut down on weight you may not find it is essential.
Actually, there are no bears on the northern trail or the southern for that matter. What you will find is lot's and lot's of farmland. Mostly corn and soybeans. Snakes won't be a problem. Leave them alone and they won't trouble you. Carry a walking stick and if you have to step over a fallen tree or log just step over with your walking stick first. That way if a snake happens to be on the opposite side and you surprise them, they will strike at the stick and not your foot or leg. I've never had a problem with a snake...ever. I respect them and leave them alone and practice some safe habits on the trail (like the walking stick trick). You might see some but the odds of encountering a poisonous snake are pretty slim. Through the Midwest anyway the more common would be cotton mouth or copperhead but you probably won't see either one on the northern route. You could on the southern route but they aren't aggressive if you give them some space and don't bother them. At least that's been my experience.
As for population density, that's pretty much a wash. The northern trail will take you through Cook County, Illinois, which is probably one of the more populated areas on the trail.
I carry a Gerber Sportsman saw and it does a pretty nice job. Has held up pretty well and it's pretty compact. Of course, there are lot's of saws on the market.

rick i dont have a british accent, its a very welsh one and does not sound british ,i asume leo is law enforcement officer yeh ,i should be ok with them as long as i dont look as though im out looking for trouble,most of my issue kit is in my pack and only used in the event i have to use it ,eg hunting rabbits or its rainingand my civies are wet or dirty my pack fully loaded wieghs in at a tad under 45lbs so im training with 50lbs in it, i have bought a folding saw on ebay and expect delivery soon ,as you have one i bought gerber.

wilf123,As far as the bears I highly recommend the pressurized air horns. A local sporting goods store has the large size about the size of a soda can and a miniature version as well. I bought a couple for around our farm and they seem to work well at scarin' em off.
Also, I would ditch the machete for a really small axe or a small Silky folding saw.

i m still sceptical of not having to worry about snakes ,over here we have a few snakes but only one piosonous , the adder ,i seem to have a deep fear of them and they seem to me to go out of they,r way to cross my path ,i have been watching ray mears and he tells us to step on a log or rock not over it ,but i will still carry my hiking poles and use them.
