View Full Version : Living off a lake

I went to a lake nearby my house today and walked around, went up to the shore and was amazed at how many little fishies were all over the place. There was literally a meal that could have filled me up right in front of my feet if I caught them all. And I think I found a pretty easy way to catch them, I had them going after and eating my spit everytime I spit into the water, to a point that it seemed instinctual on their part, so if I did this and had them expecting more one is bound to go up and catch a hook I set in the water. I decided this was the perfect place for me to begin my solitary survival experience, being relatively close to home (15 miles or so) and pretty damn basic as far as difficulty. I also went to a store and found a book on plants for the area (wasn't even looking for it) so it seems almost like a calling. The only question is is it imperative for the lake water to be treated? That's something that I don't ever remember reading about, it would seem like it would have to be boiled due to all of the life living in there there are bound to be parasites, but as for the water itself it's actually pretty clear and clean looking for a lake. I found a small stream leading to it with very slow running water, I imagine this would be safer. But is it safe enough on its own? Boiling water is probably my main concern because I want to be able to get by on my own without a pot.

At least a store bought pot. Making one on my own with only what nature provides (and my knife of course) is high up on my list of things to learn and master.

All water should be treated regardless of clarity. Just because it is clear does not mean it is clean. An animal could've died and fallen in the stream and left microorganisms in the water thereby making it unsafe. Even fallen in the lake and sank. a decomposing carcass in the water will contaminate it. Better safe than sorry.

Yeah I figured, just wasn't entirely sure seeing as how it's like a thriving ecosystem, thought it might cancel out anything bad lol. What about the slow running, very shallow stream?
wilf123

boil it anyway better safe and well, than squatting over a hole in the ground with what feels like your insides are running out of your bum ,slow shallow water more likely to have animal droppings in it they will always cross in the best places ,and that includes the brown rat how cant control his bladder and his pee contains wiels disease, not a very nice way to die ,if not treated in 4 days you will die a very painfull bloody and gruesome death iv seen it its not nice at all ,so boil that water son and boil it good.
Magpie - What is your age category? You said you earned your Eagle Scout four years ago so you must be late teens/early 20s? An Eagle Scout should know that ALL water needs to be treated. Poco's opening statement was "All water" and you still came right back and asked about the stream.
Do you really believe you can catch a meal with spit?
Something isn't adding up here. Either you aren't what you represent yourself to be or the qualifications for Eagle Scout have slipped.....a lot.

well i don't know squat about the scouts, i was asked not to come back after a couple of meetings as a child, so i will just go with this
i live in an area of lots of lakes, some not very touched by the hand of man, i have been able to cathc perch by hand in one area just had to sacrifice 2 peices of bread, good trade in my mind a dozen fish for bread. plus lots of shellfish and other edibles around lakes
now as to water, and this depends on my situation alot of times i do not boil water, if i was living in the bush long term i would but lets say a short survival term 72 hours, by the time you got the trots from bad water you most likely would be recued anyways then can get treated, provided you have followed the rules and left notice of your travels
now the thing to look for is a running stream into the lake also i lok for lush green vegetation and signs of life i will usually dig out a small hole and while the silt settles i will walk up stream for 5 or 10 minutes to look at what else is around see if any dead wildlife, also then will smell the water and touch some to my lips then taste after that i will drink away, now i do have the benefit of living in an area of no industry or farms upstream, so far i have nevr been sick, only time in my life i was sick came either from the meat i ate or from a canteen of water given to me by a freind.
so hopefully that will give ya some ideas

Ok I am concerned quite a bit folks. You must have never read of how many folks died from dysentery in pioneering days, a time when there were NO farms For miles away at the least. there was Zero factories.and very few mines... so where did these deadly diseases come from? Water, water that these people THOUGHT was safe to drink. I would say they had a LOT more experience determining a "safe" water source than us, who are used to safe treated tap water.(which isn't always safe BTW, a town near me has "Boil advisories" at least 3 times a year) Take your chances if you must, but if you value your skin, BOIL the water!!!
Oh yeah forgot to say this... I've had dysentery, from water collected off a poncho(rain runoff) and I promise you it was no fun. Diarrhea is much preferable,to dysentery. There is just no comparison.
It's okay, poco. Some folks just have to drink downstream from the herd a time or two to figure it out.

The Arkansas river which runs through Wichita is probably a water source to avoid. There is a yearly river festival and for that week they have daily fecal count updates on the river. A lot of folks have become sick just playing in the water. There have been a numerous times when the public was told not to eat the fish from it. There are a lot of hidden things that can cause problems.

It might serve well to keep up to date with area warnings if you plan to use certain bodys of water for survival.
Survival planning seems to be an ongoing and expanding process...at least for me but then again I have a LOT to learn.

failure to boil and or insufficient boiling of water is a common mistake. some think that bringing water to a boil is enough, nope....... hard rolling boil for 10 to 15 minutes is proper, never drink fishy smelling water or from animal drinking holes, avoid reddish colored algea or water with a bubbly film floating on top. thats how to avoid disentary. even boiling will not make those waters safe to drink.

Well I just turned 22 last month. To be honest I would not say boy scouts prepared me for any real survival situation. While I did learn a lot of great skills, camping trips were very controlled, and we were never really tested in an environment where we would actually need the skills. Merit badges, knot tying, first aid etc. was all learned inside a nice air conditioned building (or scout camp which was even more controlled). What I remember (and boy scouts might not actually be the source come to think of it) is that unless there are sure signs nearby (carcass upstream, lack of fish life and vegetation) running water SHOULD be okay to drink. I've done it before, but after reading what has been replied here I suppose that's a bad idea afterall. Glad I asked.

And I never actually suggested catching fish with spit, the spit just gave me an idea, I had them swarming and it could be used to lure them, not actually catch them.
And I never actually suggested catching fish with spit...

Well I don't plan on taking a tackle box with me you know? It's not like I would use the spit as bait.
And you know the qualifications in boy scouts probably HAVE dropped, I wouldn't know for sure, but I know that it was pretty relaxed and not strict at all, don't blame me for it. If I knew everything from boy scouts I wouldn't be here asking questions about water, which is like I said my main concern, seeing as how important it is and possibly dangerous at the same time. I'm confident in myself in many other areas, but I don't want to take any chances when it comes to water. Forgive me for the ignorance that I apparently shouldn't have.

That's great and all but the whole point of any of this for me is to see if I can get by with as little material as possible. I don't understand buying all sorts of products and then going out to "survive". You might as well go camping if that's your thing.

Technically yes, but I probably wouldn't want to use my clothing too much other than clothing, unless necessary. All I plan on bringing is a source for fire, a knife, and a small first aid kit (maybe 1 bottle of water my first time alone). And maybe if I learn enough doing that then I WILL be able to survive in case of that highly unlikely situation. But I didn't come here to argue with anyone.

You want to boil your poncho for 10-15 minutes go right ahead. You'll ruin your poncho. If you have to boil something that long BOIL THE WATER!!!!BTW where did the water come from to boil the poncho anyway? If you have that much water just boil it ,let cool and drink. Forget the poncho.

There is so much in this thread that gives me concern. I'll only address a couple of things.
Magpie - TREAT THE WATER! Preferably boiling, as chemical treatment may not kill all the nasties (neither will remove chemical contamination). You asked the question and people are giving you the answers. If you don't want to take the advice that is given that's fine, but what's the point of all the "yeah but"?
Gene - I disagree with the rolling boil for 10 to 15 minutes. Bringing the water to a boil and then removing it from the heat is sufficient to kill the nasties.

Just so no one thinks I HAD to learn this lesson the hard way. I was 82nd Abn in the army in Spain("Dog and Pony show" trying to get them to join NATO). we didn't get a h2o resupply and ran out,it was arid country and when it rained I collected what ran off my poncho shelter, like everyone else. Couldn't boil it (noise and LIGHT discipline rules were in effect) no purification tabs. I wasn't the only one, almost an entire company contracted dysentery to varying degrees.

crash I hope that is not the impression I give. I take everyone's advice seriously, I liked that video by the way erunkis, you did a good job. Sorry if I went off course but I don't appreciate accusations, belittlement and sarcasm, which is the impression I got from someone claiming to help me. Why would I say that I have limited experience and zero solitary experience and then lie about my eagle scout? Maybe my question is stupid to some of you especially after stating that I am an eagle scout, but that's the way it is and I'm glad I asked regardless because now I know not to take chances. And it also seems that others learned something from the post as well.

Well in the Army they told us that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. That's true - ask away, If someone thinks it is a stupid question or belittles you... So what... as long as you got your answer. and Yes someone could learn something from a question you ask(probably because they were afraid to ask the same question). as long as it benefits you and your educational pursuits don't worry what everyone thinks, Even if it's me thats being the Smarta$$. Some times I worry Too much about what others think, but it really doesn't matter.... If I get my answer, even if I don't like it.

the metoods of gathering water that is in my video do not need boiling , those are fresh, here in fla the Omeba lives in lakes and can withstand high temps the local suggestion is to boil water for 15 minutes if suspected of contamination. gyro sporidium and strepticochis and other bactreia like sparillium, are cholera are destroid by low temps. beware of lake water. chemical contaminants must be filtered by micro filtraton. metallic poisons must be removed by reverse ozmosis. and remember that dead bacteria can make you sick.

well i agree and disagree, if in a survival situation and have no way to start a fire or boil(lets say raining for a couple of weeks and you went out for what ever reason) now yes some of us can start a fire in the rain but lets just keep it down to the average joe the plumber here lurking and he will try to remeber what her read here,
i still say if it is a survival situation read my original post and you will get out alive, sure there is a possibility you could get sick, but the pioneers died because of the lack of medical attention, dysentery is blood in the stool and lots of diahrea which dehyrated you anlong with the little bacteria tearing you up, but if you have followed the rules of survival being the most important thing is leaving your intinery then even if you get sick after 72 hours you will have been rescued and in hospital reciave medical attention
now if you are on a self imposed longer term scenario then yes boil, unless unable to but always follow the proper methods of gaining water
