So I recently got my EMT specialist license. Due to me getting this I will now be moving either to the Detroit station or the station just south of Detroit. I live 30 miles north of Michigan so this causes a bit of a problem. Right now I keep a nalgene bottle filled with survival supplies in my car. I am wanting to put together a get home bag. It must have the following characteristics.
comfortable to carry
Enough room for stuff
water resistant if not proof
somewhat sheeple friendly.

It will contain the following:
Shelter
Poncho
Garbage bags
Emergency blankets
A tarp
Light
A small coleman LED lantern
A LED headlamp
Spare Batts
LED penlight
Surefire G2 LED
Fire
Lighters (bic)
matches and striker
magnesium firestarter
Tinder
Food
Canned foods
Ramen
Jerky
granola bars
Snare wire
esbit stove
small pot/ aluminum foil bread pans
Rat trap
fishing kit (hooks, line, split shots)
clothing
Some city camo (blue jeans, tee shirt)
some regular camo (thinking multicam or tigerstripe)
a good camo jacket M65 field coat
Hat
mosquito netting
Water
Water bottle or a filter bottle
Iodine tabs
First Aid
A medium sized first aid kit
Land Nav
Compass
maps of AO (laminated)
Misc.
Crowbar
Pen and paper
550 cord
folding shovel
GMRS radio (people at home have instructions to listen on such channel)
Emergency radio
Ipod (comfort, peacefulness)
signal mirror
goggles (RX spare set backup for everyday glasses)
N95
work gloves
Collapsing walking stick (doubles as cane pole for fishing)
Single shot .223 with ammo
.22lr and magnum sleeves with ammo for above .223
leatherman
Folding knife
Fixed blade knife
Whistle
Baby wipes
CCW gun once I get my CCW (9x18,9x19)

If I am missing anything let me know. I welcome any advice you guys and gals give me. I am hoping to put this all into a medium ALICE pack. I also want to have a small survival kit (altoids kit sized) for if I absolutly have to ditch my bag for whatever reason. I would keep this with me and have a chance.

It's not just what you have in your kit, it's also how you put it all together.
Pictures to follow.

I'm not sure where you live. You said 30 miles north of Michigan. That puts you in Canada. I'm going to assume you meant 30 miles North of Detroit, Michigan. I'm also going to make the assumption you are trying to get home on foot. Hence all the stuff you packed. So.......

The purpose of your get home bag is to get home. How are you going to hoss all of that stuff? You want enough to cover your tush but be light and mobile.

Do you really need a crowbar and tri-fold shovel?

How are you going to carry a single shot .223 with ammo, .22lr and magnum sleeves with ammo for above .223, and a CCW with ammo? And why a single shot .223?

Any kind of camo is going to draw attention to yourself in an urban setting. You want to blend in. Stick with civilian clothes. The most likely event is a natural disaster not warfare.

Honestly, I think you packed for a BOB, not a get home bag. If that's what you want then that's fine. Like any other plan, you need to exercise it and make sure it's practical and doable. Not just theoretical. So take a week-end and try to bug home. Although I wouldn't be walking through downtown Detroit carrying a .223....just sayin'.

By the way, congratulations on the new license!!!!

With 30 miles to travel, you need more than a get home bag! All that gear is a BOB, in fact that's more gear than I have in my BOB! 30 miles, how much water can you carry? do you have water sources available along your planned travel? How much does all that stuff weigh? If you can't get home in your car, do you plan to cache the gear you can't carry for later recovery?

So you'll be storing all that stuff in the trunk of your car? In Detroit? Will you still expect it to be there when you return at the end of your shift? I guess what I'm also thinking is what a sight you're going to make humping all that stuff back home. Especially the firearms. :cool2:

Yeah i meant 30 north of detroit. I choose the single shot because I like it. It is cheap, extremely light, and allows me a bit of a range on ammo. It would likely stay in the pack until I was in an area that I would hunt in. I said I would have city camo (blue jeans and T shirt) You just didn't read that part. I found out I will be working south of detroit and that gives me more options. I will be able to avoid the city of detroit and go around it. Thanks on the congrats. more money = more preps.

It is very silly to think that a cell phone would work. I know sam would help me out if he could. But what if he can't, we are prepping because we don't want to rely on others. At work we park our cars inside the station, and we have a pretty decent security system (we have drugs at the stations) I think I could get this to fit in a medium sized bag and keep it under 45lbs.

In michigan you are never more than a mile or so from a water source. I would have a filtering device so I can stop along the way at pre-determined spots. I don't yet know how much it weighs but I imagine it to be under 45lbs. If I had to leave gear I would probably place it in an easy to recognize spot and write down the location for future reference.

Just by looking at your list of stuff I can tell you it's way more than 45 lbs. This is more or less my kit, with 4 liters of water in the hydration bladder i'm at 65 lbs, I can max out at 10 liters between the 2 hydration bladders and the nalgene bottle. This 65lbs does not include the shotgun itself

Do you really need all that STUFF to get home???????
Does the compass on your Survival Knife have a little air bubble in it?

A magnum sleeve is a metal insert allowing me to change the caliber of my rifle from .223 to .22magnum. I think if I had to walk all the way home it would take me a good 4-6 days to get home. I don't have a survival knife because I think it is often times part of a poorly made knife. DO you have a survival knife?

You don't need to change the caliber of your rifle to get home. It also shouldn't take you more than two days walking to get home. This assumes your car is dead and walking is your only option. So, to make things easier:

1. water: get a purification device. Boiling is your back-up. A canteen to keep it in. A way to boil the water ( canteen cup).
2. Shelter: a light weight tarp. An appropriate sleeping bag.
3. Fire making devices. A Fire steel and lighter.
4. Food: A couple of MRE's.
5. A fixed blade knife and a saw.
6. Map , compass and flash light.
7. Clothing. Appropriate for the region and time of year. A hat and gloves or extra socks. A poncho.
8. First aid items.
9. comm and signaling devises.
10.Something to keep your stuff in. (a pack).

That's all I can think of for now. I hope this helps.

I'm sure others have their list. You have to evaluate your needs and make the adjustments.

No need to make a big deal about it, but I sure don't carry it in my car; even in a bag. Cops don't care for their citizens going armed to the teeth in city limits 'round these parts. :cool2:

Thank you for responding. No I don't have a Suvival knife. I do have
a gerber folder, a bushman, and few knives that i have made.
Do you plan on shooting a lot on your way home? It is just odd that
someone would carry all that stuff just to get back home.

I would definitely consider your list way more of a BOB than a GHB (isn't that a rave drug?). Before building the bag, think about what resources might still be available and what you think won't be available. If you're thinking about something nasty that takes out all the cars at once, like EMP or the solar storm to end all solar storms, then light and fast seems the order of the day. I'm not going to want to be held back and like I have something someone else needs while traveling on foot through Detroit! I'd try to get my pack to a weight that isn't going to slow me down at a steady jog, so 25-30 pounds max, ideally 20-25 pounds.

Since you're in Michigan, water is always close at hand, but a 3 liter camelbak with an in-line filtration system is a great place to start. That keeps your maximum water weight to about 6.5 pounds and lets you fill up on the fly.

If you're going to be out for a maximum of three days at 10 miles per day (assuming something is hindering you like needing to evade and travel at particular times of day/night), then you don't need to get carried away with food. A dozen granola bars, some MRE crackers with MRE peanut butter, jelly and cheese, some chicken bullion cubes and an Esbit stove are more than adequate if you make sure you're accounting for 2k-2.5k calories per day. If you're worried about having to hole up for several days before moving because of weather or some other factors, consider adding a lifeboat ration.

How about a few caches around the city and along your evac route? Just an 18" long piece of 6" PVC with the ends greased on will store a remarkable amount of food. Buried a couple inches under the soil in planter boxes, abandoned lots, etc. will give you a cheap way to store weeks worth of food along the way. If they get found, provided they're only pasta, rice, beans, MRE entres, or other food, nobody will even care. Obviously mark then to indicate tampering, but it's not like there will be any search for who's caching food around the city if someone bumps into one while changing out the seasonal foliage. Lesson: Don't cache guns or ammo or you'll draw unnecessary attention to your preps and possibly to yourself.

I'd carry an MSR E-wing tarp and 50' of parachute cord for my shelter. Low profile, easy to set up, and 7 oz. That's why I don't leave mine behind no matter where I go.

Space blankets are not going to be adequate if it's winter. I'd opt for a highly compressable down sleeping bag. I have a Western Mountaineering 25F rated bag that's smaller than an NFL football when compressed and weighs in at 1 pound 15 ounces with the stuff sack. Sure, it's not going to be adequate on the coldest of nights, but add a space bag as a liner and wear your polypro longjohns and you'll be comfortable down to 15F and survive the night down to close to zero. Remember that building a fire is not necessarily going to be an option if there's bad people out there, so staying warm is a top priority. I usually wouldn't recommend down to a guy in Michigan, but to keep things light and tight, I don't see many options. If you can find cardboard, you'll have an adequate ground pad without having to carry the bulk in your kit with you every day. You can't find a homeless person who hasn't learned this trick, but how many folks thought about this before reading it here?

The real basics should include (this is where your real weight and bulk will be):
Polypro top and bottom
Windproof/rain proof pants and jacket (ideally goretex, but there's good imitations that are more than adequate and coated nylon beats the heck out of plastic) Personally, I like the lightest stuff I can find, that's unlined and I'll add my own layers as needed.
Bulk clothing (during the summer, fleece or a hoodie is probably adequate, during the winter, down or fiber fill jackets are a must)
Adequate footware (your work boots might be perfectly fine)
Wool socks
Insulated leather gloves (function as work gloves and gloves for warmth)
Balaclava
Toe warmers (those little disposable inserts that you stick in the bottom of your boots are serious toe savers when you don't have your Sorels available)
Buy a medium space bag (www.spacebag.com) (also available at many stores including REI) and put all the bulky clothes in it and you'll compress them to 1/3 the space.

Accept that during the summer your kit will be light and lean and during the winter it's going to be bulkier. If it's summer and you're on foot, dump the stuff you don't need early on. If it's 90F in the shade, you don't need toe warmers, a balaclava, or fleece... If it's -20F grab some newspapers on your way out of town. Balling up newspapers inside your windproof layer is like wearing a michilin man outfit. You'll look funny, but you'll be the warmest one laughing.

For lighting, don't get carried away by gadgetry. A photon II on your keychain and a good LED headlamp with spare batteries is adequate.

A magnesium firestarter is great, but add a film canister or prescription bottle full of vasolined cotton balls and you can start a fire in even the soggiest and windiest of conditions. I tried starting a fire last week in Wyoming (about ten miles west of a massive windfarm) with my magnesium alone and didn't stand a chance because it kept blowing away as I scraped it. Sure, there's tricks like cutting the bottom out of your jeans pocket for a pouch to catch it in, but cotton balls work so much better.

I'd skip the camo and the urban camo and opt for a compromise of some green or khaki Dockers/Columbia cargo pants or actual olive drab or tan BDU cargo pants and a khaki dress shirt and/or t-shirt. That's what I keep in my office at work for evac clothes and on one occasion when I dumped my chicken salad in my lap during lunch, I was real happy I had something to change into back at the office. The fashion conscious cargo pant movement has been a boone for helping survivalists blend in at work.:cool2:

Just remember, if there's an incident that makes cars no-worky, your GPRS radios aren't working either. Also, your i-pod will make an adequate signal mirror.

Without a gun that's about 21-29 pounds (summer vs. winter). I certainly wouldn't carry two guns and until you're 21 and have a CCW, your options are limited. Personally, I'd opt for a 20 guage coach gun (side-by-side double barrel) because it's light weight, can break down to a total length of 18.5" and you can load one barrel with a slug for heavy work out to 75-100 yards and one with #6 shot for all your small game. There's certainly plenty of options out there and I don't oppose your single shot .223 if you already have it; I just wouldn't want to run into a bear with that as my only gun, that's all. Once you get a CCW, your decisions become a lot easier. I just surprised myself by making four consecutive shots at 60 yards on my steel siloette targets with my 3" barrel Kahr PM-9 (9mm). Imagine what's possible with a "real gun".

Remember that your mind is your greatest weapon and there's hundreds of people living on the streets in your city even during the harshest winters. If you have nothing but a couple of large trash bags you can put one inside the other and fill the space inbetween with newspaper for an expedient sleeping bag. Plan better than that, but recognize that the people of the streets have lessons to teach. Observe, talk and listen. You have one of the greatest jobs in the world for interacting with people from all walks of life. Take advantage of it!

Oh, just editing to mention knives. I carry a 3" blade folding Benchmade (marketed as H&K) that I find adequate for urban stuff. If you're going to be in the deep woods, carry something in your pack that's bigger, otherwise, if you can skin a rabbit with it, why carry more?

Very extensive list Mcfd

You have redondant (sp?) items on your list that could if you wished save you some space and weight such as your LED lantern, LED headlamp, LED pen light, surefire G2 (i am jealous). The headlamp would certainly be enough.
I would also skip on the ramen, since you need water to make that work.

I would think mobility, agility and a low profile would be to your advantage in such a predicament. Classic case of E&E here.
endurance makes good points.
As he said, i would max out at 20 pounds. I would rather be light and extremely mobile, than heavy and comfortable.
