I was talking to a buddy about gas powered generators. We were talking about hurricanes and being prepared and stuff. He mentioned that when the power is down and all you got is your generator make a power cord with male ends on both sides. Then plug it in to lets say an outlet in your living room for instance. That should send electricity to every outlet on the same breaker? Have you heard of this before. I am not much of an electrician so I just nodded my head like I knew what he was talking about. What say you?

Well I think for DC power that would work. As in vehicle current, but not sure AC would do so well. It might work but I don't think AC is designed to flow in the opposite direction that it was meant to. Might have to research that now...I'm intrigued.

Ok did somne research and No would be my answer. Too many safety concerns.

One if the generator is plugged in and the power gets turned back on there will be power trying to flow in opposite direction in the same line.

Also for those that may be working on downed power lines that should be dead may get injured because those lines are not dead since the generator is now powering the lines.

I would not do it!

Don't, don't, don't do it!

You can easily run the risk of electrocuting a linesman working down the road unless you shut off your main breaker.

You will not only power that breaker circuit, you will backfeed the entire house.

You can also burn out appliances if you draw too much of a load.

If you want to power the entire house, wire your generator to a transfer switch. Otherwise, simply draw power from your generator by plugging your devices into it, rather than connecting it to your electrical system.

We wanna' keep you 'round here for a while! :)

You can do that and backfeed your whole house, (if your gen. is big enough) but you first need to break the connection between your house and the grid. (If not, your gen, is going to be trying to power the whole grid...and the guys trying to work on it will be grabbing hot wires that they think are dead.)

I guess the short answer would be...It can be done, but shouldn't be, unless you are 100% sure that you know how to do it safely.

That is what I have done for 30 + years.

First step: Throw the main switch (Disconect from the grid, Or you could fry a lineman)

Step Two: MUST plug male into house first, NOT Generator first.

Step three: Plug into Running generator.

Note: I have a 220 volt 30 amp twist lock cord that plugs into the generator 220 outlet........on the other end is a electric dryer male, I just unplug the dryer and plug in the generator.

It is not a problem, if you do it correctly......I mean......HOW Do you think cabins off the grid are plugged into a generator. It is no different.

Now see I always thought they were hard wired to the breaker box or something like that. Basically it's the same setup as my camper that I wired from scratch then. Still would hate to forget to shut the main breaker off.

Most of this has already been said, but .... A lot of people around here do it. I don't. Most that do, plug into the 220 line for their dryer. As has been said, you can and will back feed the system this way. If you do this, make sure you open your main power breaker so that you only power your house, and not the electric company worker trying to restore power to your area. As I said, I don't do it. A transfer switch and panel is the way to go IMO. Short of that, just power the individual equipment that you need. Here's as good a place as any to add - make sure that you use your generator in a well ventilated area. The CO in a confined space will kill. Sadly, it happens every hurricane season around here.

Several have already noted the dangers of "back-feeding" the grid with your own generated power: you could kill a lineman or your neighbor.

But the legal ramifications of this are simple and nearly universal:
YOU WILL GO TO JAIL!!!

Consider this when using a generator: isolate your use from the Grid.
The Transfer switch/panel that Crash Dive spoke of is the best route to go, or simply route power directly as Ken has said.

Common around here too.

Suicide cable... make sure you do it right if you are gonna do it ;)

220 gen--> 220 dryer or other outlet is what's common.

Depending on your generator and setup the voltage won't be a constant 119-122 it will probably vary a lot depending on load and what is starting up and this could fry sensitive electronic equipment... Line Conditioners (http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-LS606M-Conditioner-outlet/dp/B00006B83G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1249855589&sr=8-1) ensure that you get the correct voltage to the appliance.

These will also let you safely run a computer on a non-inverter based generator.

600w is more than enough for your basic desktop... even a dual monitor system more than enough. Even most home stereo systems this should be fine.

I was told by Sears that my propane stove had sensitive electronics and that power outages sometimes caused issues and that a surge, line conditioner or apc (that does conditioning) would pro-long the life... also true for our tankless hot water heater. Some appliances like laptops say they can handle a wide voltage range because they already have a power supply that adjusts.

Just some info I've picked up :D

Tell him if he is going to do it, to install a transfer switch. He can install a gravity switch that will automatically switch back and forth or a manual one. The manual one is less expensive.

The transfer switch ensures you only power your house and not the grid. It will also let you load your generator evenly.

Short story: I lived in a studio on top of the Garage, and the wiring at the breaker fried. I told the landlord what had happened and his fix was to do that. a Male to male from a working circuit downstairs to the bad circuit upstairs. Then he said I would have t pay to get his wiring fixed...

One night the cable melted when the fridge kicked on and it lit on fire and scorched the wall pretty good. It was at that point that I stopped paying rent to the SOB...
