This isnt a new desire for me. Ive wanted to do this for a LONG time now. I even have the place picked out. I actively study bushcraft and survival skills and I practice them often. Its not that I hate society or civilization (although I dont love it either) its just that nature is SO much better. I feel a real sense of euphoria everytime I step into the woods. This isnt just a dream. I want to do it. Im going to do it.
Heres the problem..
I will need money. I am a sensible and intelligent person. I know that there will be times when I need supplies that I wont be able to obtain myself. For instance, I wear glasses. I will need a new pair every year or two. I will need hunting licenses. Im not a poacherbut mostly I dont want to go to jail. And trust me. No matter how far out you go, at some point in time, you WILL run across somebody out there with you. Guaranteed. Could be a cop, a conservation officer or a hard core backpacker.
So how can I earn some money while living in the woods? Ive done the math and in the worst case scenario I would only need a max of 6 grand a year. I could carve and construct items like fur pillows and primitive fire drills to sell at Framers Markets and the like. But that wont be enough.
Please, what ideas do you have to earn some cash while living in the woods?

Are you qualified to be a guide? Is there a demand for it where you'll be living?

If you live in an area where there are Morel mushrooms this might be an option. Some restaurants offer top dollar for them. There was a recent post about panning for gold, another option.Ever watch the Travel Channel(I think) they had some shows about searching for treasures, semi-precious stones and the like.Just keep looking and thinking.
What makes you think you have the skills to live in the wild? If you just conqued the fire bow in a controlled environment you might need to pick up a few more skills and ideas. Just asking. You know you. I don't.
How about running a trap line? How about working for an outfitter? A couple of months or so could give you 8 months in the wild.

This is why western civilization changed forever with the industrial age, if you start with a "nest-egg" then banking your efforts may allow you to run off intrest you obtain through the fiscal year but as always wilderness survival means meager living anyway.
This is something most all of us dream about but few will ever risk because of the sacrifice you face daily, I say if you think you can ~ then most likely it is possible through true grit, plus if it all becomes to much then you can come back and hang out with the rest of us day-dreamers?
I've grown up about as much as I think I'm gonna, Hope. Well, there's always out I guess.
How old are you ? If you are in your 50s you will soon need Meds. and that will be big money . If you're in your 3os or 40s you are in luck you are in your prim of life go for it.. If you're in your 20s you are going to wont a girl at some time and they will be more $$$$ then you will ever see .. Man invented society to impress woman and most of them love it . Man on the other hand is just as happy in a cave eating half raw meat and on Sat. night going over at Gor's for a fight... If you are in your teens you need to post that so WE know how to talk to you
I have the same desire, and someday I WILL do it. Right now I have too many responsibilities. What you want to do is buy some land. You can find bush in Alaska or Canada dirt cheap, sometimes less than $500 an acre. Do the research, find something you like, buy the land. It won't have electricity or water, and probably not even a road within miles. You may have to fly your gear in, or float it in and then haul it through the woods. Build yourself a cabin, stock it with a couple years of food. Buy some equipment. Chain saws, hand tools, a wood stove, maybe a 4 wheeler or snowmobile. I presume you have a job, so do this NOW, while you have an income. Then sell everything else you own, put the rest of your money in the bank and let it draw interest. You can hunt and fish all you like (with the proper lisence, of course) and go to town a couple times a year for supplies, a medical checkup, and a visit to the local strip club.
I just condensed a really hard and time intensive project into a paragraph, so it sounds a lot easier than it is, but if you really want it, you can do it. But do it right, don't head off with a backpack and expect to live off the land eating grubs and mushrooms.

Normally, I just blow past the escapist threads when they pop up. I like the question posed here, though. Many of these ideas depend on location and, since you weren't specific, I'll just toss them all in:
1. Begging - Will Work For Food. Make sure you bring your backpack and sleeping bag with you or folks will think you're just a lazy local scamming. Resist the urge to smoke while you're out there because folks think, "If he has money for cigarettes. . . . "
Materials needed: cardboard box, marker, time
Location: busy overpass
2. Crafting. You will be exercising quite a few primitive skills anyway for pure survival. Make extra or, even better, sell off your lightly used first efforts. If you find the right trendy little suburban farmer's market or specialty store, you can turn a tidy sum. Rich folk love the 'distressed' look and anything that is hand made. Look for stores that will let you sell on consignment. Think something portable and light such as baskets or wreaths.
Materials needed: varies
Location: near a population center of some sort, preferably a touristy location
3. Seasonal labor. Learn to pick produce and make yourself available during harvest time. Make contacts with local, small-scale farmers through the farmer's market and possibly set up a work-for-food set-up. Form a decent relationship with one or more families to help supplement your diet. Remember, even Proenneke had people out in The World helping him out now and again.
Materials needed: varies.
Location: close enough to agri communities for this to be effective
4. Busking - If you have some kind of entertaining skill, then become a street performer at your local farmer's market. This isn't begging, like #1, because you are actually selling a service of some sort. In some of the upscale farmer's markets - or those with a nice middle-class suburban clientele - do something you can sell like balloon animals. I know a guy makes a killing doing that to supplement his income. $4.00 for SpiderMan made out of balloons? Yeah.
Materials: know how to do something entertaining, bonus points if you can sell a product.
Location: somewhere with people who have enough discretionary income to let go of it for you.

Id look for work that can keep you on the fringes. Many farms are rural enough to be in the woods. Its easy to live in the woods if you get into logging. Theres seasonal work like sugar bush camps. Lots of folks around here get a wad of money working on fishing boats and then bail out of the working for cash world for the rest of the year. Mostly you have to do a number of things . just dont be afraid of work. Most folks that dont work have some form of money pit to draw from.
The only fellow I know that did it for real was my buddy Willard, he basically lived in the woods with nothing and ended up famous after he died.

Looking at all of the responses, I guess I have a question for the OP. Do you mean living in the wilderness or living in a rural area? I mean, if you're going to markets to sell your stuff on weekends and are thinking about working......is it rural living that your are seeking?

Lots of responses here. Let's see if I can answer some questions here.
I was going to answer Sarky's post first because it looks like he's very excitable and about to blow a gasket. But judging by his instantly aggressive and angry posts I doubt he would have anything useful to offer.
I live in Canada, Alberta...right now southern Canada but I will be relocating to the northern half when/if I think I can pull this off...and I think I can if I'm smart about it. I'm in my 30's and my survival skill level is high. But this isn't about PURE survival or PURE primitive living. If it was, I wouldn't be looking for ways to earn cash. Btw, I currently work as an apprentice electrician. I will be bringing some tools with me, as well, such as saws, knives, shovel, that type of thing.
There are some good suggestions here. But I should point out that I'll be living quite a ways from any town, at least 2 days into the bush by foot. I won't be living in a rural community...not secluded enough for me. Ideally, I'm hoping that I won't have to go into town more than once a month. And that would be mostly to sell wares as someone had suggested. There are a lot of things I can craft while bush living and I'm hoping to sell those at the local Farmer's Markets. But I'll be lucky if I bring in $50 bucks a month doing that. So I'll need to do find something else as well.
I've thought about selling mushrooms, etc but here in Canada you need a license to do that and the health inpectors would most likely have a problem with it. No facilities or even running water...so I don't think that would fly.
I'm looking into buying a small piece of land smack dab in the middle of nowhere so I won't be squatting. However, I've never seen land as cheap as $500 an acre. But I will keep looking. The more isolated the location the cheaper the land...usually.
But owning the land I live on won't solve my money problem. Although, it'll solve a lot of legal issues...which is great. Thanks for the suggestion. If I manage to acquire a small piece of this earth I may have a business idea to bring in some cash involving tourism...but we'll see.
I've also looked into trapping. This may be the best option. But I've looked into this and it's impossoble to make 6 grand a year trapping. So say the trappers I've spoken with. In addition, most trap lines here are huge. In order for me to manage it I would need a quad, snowmobile and most likely a canoe, too. Thats a big investment...too big. However, if I am SUPER lucky and can acquire a small trapline...then that would solve my land problem and it would bring in SOME money and even some food. Combine this with the selling crafts and wares and I MIGHT be able to pull in $100 - $200 a month. But I think my estimates might be a bit high. Either way, $100 bucks or so a month is better than nothing...and its a start.
I'm not qualified to be a guide. Although, I could probably get seasonal work with an outfitter...maybe. This might be a good idea. Depending on what kind of money an outfitter offers....plus I need to learn to ride a horse :)
Again, thanks for all the ideas. Keep 'em coming. I'm drafting a list of them all. That way I can research them and see if the idea is feasible or not. I WILL get there...its just a matter of time.

There is another member that lives remotely. You should check out her blogs (Wild Woman). I don't remember the dollar amount that she and her partner live on, but I believe it is considerably less than 6K a year. Another possibility - and I don't know the logistics of how you would, or even if you would want to......work in (town, village, whatever) for brief periods to earn enough to buy what you need.

Crash, I could be wrong, but I remember her saying $25,000.-- per year. What people learn is it is not cheap, or easy, to live in the bush. Most can't even make it 3 months, and quit.

We get a lot of people show up here who want advice or more precisely they want their egos stroked. In SARKY's defense(not that he needs it)- In the SHORT time I;ve been here ( what a couple of weeks guys?) There have been at least two maybe three people that said "I'm going off into the wilderness to live. What can ya'll tell me in two or three posts so that I can survive forever and a day?" OK that might be a little exaggerated, but not really. and some of them know next to nothing, Don't want to listen to the suggestions they are given etc.etc.etc. so sure some may come off as being harsh and acidic. but they hear this EVERY WEEK!!! so when someone new (you) comes along some are going to think -OH SH!T here we go again. So don't take too much offense at what they are saying and asking. Me I'm kinda' the middleground kinda' guy, I can see both sides.

one thing to keep in mind, if you purchace property you will have to pay taxes every year.even a small parcel next to lots of crown land would be the best i think who cares if you only have one acre, if you in a large uninhabited area
second-when i lived in pheonix in my 20's i had come from ohio a city boy,i goton at a ranch by proving how hard i could work, and learned horses from there, alot of guiding is taking lard butts who have not been on horses either, its mostly just walking the horses, insurance reasons for not running or trotting the client cuz they think they can ride but can't. so if you can sit on one and learn to saddle them and care for them you might have a chance,i was getting 350 a month plus room and board in the mid 90's

Thanks for the referal crashdive123. I sent her a pm so hoepfully the next time wildWoman is around I'll get a reply. I read all of her blogs and they were interesting but they left me with more questions.
It sounds to me like she or her boyfriend spend a great deal of time in the "city" working for a chunk of the year so they can spen the rest of their time in the bush. This may be the only solution. If I can be patient enought o get my Journeyman Electrician ticket then I can work for 3 months of the year and spend the rest of the time in blissful isolation. I was hoping to spend far less time in the city but I mighthave to alter my dreams to get what I want.
I've recently been in contact with a fellow who claims to have some SRD contacts here is Canada. Thats Sustainable Resource and Development. They're the fish cops and are also in charge of public/crown lands. It doesn't look like purchasing crown land is an option....damn it. But leasing some remote crown land still might be. I'll know for sure soon enough. I may have to move out of province to do this. Possibly the NWT but I'm not sure if they're rules are any different. If I was an American citizen I would be looking at Alaska. But being Canadian its not legal for me to simply move to the U.S and start living in the bush..even if I do own the land.

actualy you can live in the states 6 months at a time, and as far as wild woman she is a writer so she spends most of her time in the bush at the camp, her bf spends a bit of time away.
are you in a union? if so then you can make awesome money doing shutdowns 90 days at a time then take off the rest of the year, or bust your arse for one year and dissappear for a while

moving from southern to northern ALberta?
maybe north of High Level?
the winters are very severe up there and the summers filled with all kinds of bugs
& flies.
I surveyed in northern ALberta in both seasons and got my fill of cold and bugs.
WE is right, as usual, there is no reason you can't do AK through the summer months then move down into BC along the inside passage during the winter. You could even take advantage of the ferry taxi is you wanted to. There is so much untouched land in the inside passage or back into BC. You could get lost there for a good long time.
Working a few months to obtain your dream is better than not obtaining your dream at all.

We've been living "off-the-land" for the last 10 years. Avg. income per year $2,500. Where we live we NEVER see a single human being. Lots of animals though.
As for getting the "staples" of food (sugar, salt, beans, rice, etc.); I make log furniture, long bows, wooden cooking utensil sets, stone arrowheads (for jewelry & hunting), different sized leather pouches & bags (from the animals we harvest & trap), that we trade and sell during the summer and we teach survival & primitive living classes to make $$.
If you know woodworking there is always a way to make money with it.
The best advise I can give you is to make a list of ALL the necessity items you will need, stock up on them at least a year before you take the plunge. Also, start stocking up on the "staple foods" (at least 6 months worth) now and pack them in.

how hard do you find that life native dude? what do you expect out of life? back in the day folks who lived in that manner had a shorter life span due to the harshness of it all, do find that to be true? what light can you share on this subject, you would know best, folks seem to romantize this life, how much each day do you spend towards your survival and well being?

Not in my experience. I will probably die younger than anyone in my family due to sitting on my ***. My grandfather lived to be 97 and he never had running water. When he was in his late 70s, he and my dad wired in a bit of electricity - two lightbulbs with pull chains, and an outlet for a refrigerator. Never had airconditioning or a toilet. It was 1963 before my parents had an indoor bathroom. Most of my family had a similar experience, growing up in the great depression where a bit of lard and flour was like Christmas day. Just about every aunt or uncle I have lived well into their 90s if not longer. The harshness you speak of makes people strong, not wuses like most of us (including myself) are today.

I imagine that most of your day would be spent "surviving" just as most of your day now is spent working. However, I have had a few short "conversations" with John McPherson of PrairieWolf..who has skills I could only dream of having. He claims that once you are settled and have everything set up that you will have a lot of free time. Some of his suggestions were constructing primitive items like the bow/drill, spoons, bowls, etc to sell at farmers markets. I'd love to be able to sit down with that man and pick his brain.
The harshness you speak of makes people strong, not wuses like most of us (including myself) are today.
Yeah, good luck with that. No medical or dental care. Sans safety equipment like seat belts. Living a long time is really great but living a quality life has advantages, too. I'd prefer to sit on a porcelain chair to one 40 paces out back that can give me splinters, spider bites or a wasp sting in nether regions. Then there's that whole lard and flour thing. Tell the cook the lump is not quite done, please. Thank you.

It's next to impossible to give a blanket statement on how much money "you will need", be it out in the bush, the burbs or the city. It depends 150% on what you choose to "need", and on whether you have any health problems that require regular trips out and/or medication.
Having just done the last of my town trips for the year (I hope), here's roughly what I spent for the next 12 months:
$1,000.- dog and duck feed
$1,200.- groceries
$ 160.- propane
$ 60.- kerosene
$ 180.- vet costs
$ 140.- books
$ 450.- assorted hardware, odds and ends
$1,010.- 1 plane trip and 1 boat trip to get in/out
My boyfriend and I buy groceries seperately due to very differing tastes, he comes up for the fuel.
Running expenses: $100.-/month for satellite internet, plus about $80.-/year for the phone, $100.-/year for Spot satellite messenger.
You can see that keeping pets/animals out in the bush is a big luxury.
Building costs aren't calculated in, we build as we feel like (not much) and as we can afford (not much). We mill our own lumber and buy windows second-hand.
My boyfriend is a Canadian Ranger and makes about $2,000.-/year through that, he does odd jobs in town and every second year does some guiding for a month which brings in about $5,000.-
I now make about $6,000.-/year as a writer for newspapers and magazines.
None of this was clear to us when we moved out in the bush. We thought renting out a cabin to tourists was the only way to be able to make money, but it worked out different (thank God).
Make sure you have enough money put aside to live on for the first two years - year one you'll be busy building, making some mistakes and zooming up a huge learning curve. Year two you'll be able to figure out how you want to do stuff in the long run. If you're flexible and creative and willing to give many things a try, you'll figure out some way to make money out there; just be sure you don't have to add that to your to-do list of year one.
Go for it :-)
Good to see you back, WW.

survival can be easier than working for a living, if you carefuly choose your food sources.A good shelter if built properly sustains you year around. start your life out there in late winter gather and dry foods and sockpile them for the winter and you will have a great experience with survival . fish is a staple food and trapping or hunting mamals is not too reliable, so birds and fish is the way to go.

actually this thread has made me think a bit, will have to put togehter some numbers and a scenario in which i would find optimum
Thank you.
This is the funniest thing I've read in a long time. Seatbelts? Why on earth would you need a seatbelt for an old plow mule? My parents saw the doctor when they needed to, back then they made house calls. I remember my grandfather telling me he paid the doc with a chicken once. My mother is almost 82 and while she tells some stories about going hungry and working her *** off in the cotton patch, she has lived a life I could only dream to live. She gets around better than people half her age. The depression was harsh, but it was thankfully short lived. After times improved, they got on pretty well. Never had much, but they had enough to eat and a little extra. And they LIVED, they didn't sit in front of the tube or insult people on the internet.
All I'm saying is that a hard life doesn't shorten your years, nor does it take from the quality of them. Was there some bad times? Sure, and I'm not saying I want to **** in the woods every night either. But as nietzsche said, "what doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger."
That said, I'm done here. I doubt anyone will miss me, but I'm tired of some "Super Moderator" making fun of everything I post. Seems you like to make cracks about everthing I say. Disaggreement is fine - that's what a message board is for, otherwise there'd be one post and six dozen "me too" replies. But the derisive "good luck with that" kind of crap is just bull****. So, as much as I like this site, I'll hang my hat elsewhere. Good luck to those of you who are here for discussion and the sharing of knowledge.

I'd love to be able to sit down with that man and pick his brain.
i read that somewhere also, that forageing for food only took 3 or 4 hours a day(after initial set up) i guess housekeeping ain't really neccesary(hate folks stopping by unanounced) thats why i moved way out, folks have to call first

JRR - not sure what that was all about. Nobody was making fun of your posts. I believe the point of the response was to say that advances in medicine and technology have been instrumental in increasing the life expectancy of folks. I think that your point of physical labor is a good one, but that alone may not be enough. Of course, there are always exceptions.
Well, jeepers, there JRR. Sorry you got the nickers in a twist. I certainly haven't picked you out to insult and never intended to insult you at all. If I did I apologize. I took no offense to you telling me my post was the funniest thing you've even seen. Actually, got a chuckle out of it. But I don't think "good luck with that" is derisive. If you took it that way...(shrug).
You're welcome to do whatever you want. But I'll be hanged if I'd let someone run me off from someplace I wanted to be; forum or otherwise. You have the option of putting me on ignore if you have some problem with me. Or, you could have contacted me at any point to discuss the "issue".
The bottom line is it's a problem you need to deal with however you need to deal with it. It's not a problem for me. I have no feelings one way or the other for you. After all, it's just a forum.
