View Full Version : Can You Make These Simple Car Repairs - Just In Case?

I try to keep my vehicles well maintained at all times. But you never know.

Below is a list of the 12 most needed car repairs. I realize that everyone here isn't a driveway mechanic, but just how many of these repairs can you make yourself? Do you have the tools, fluids, spare parts on hand, and ability to do these yourself, just in case?

I'm okay with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and could probably get by with a bit of bailing wire and duct tape on number 11. Maybe it's time to pick up a few more spare parts...... :innocent:

1. Worn Brake Parts.

2. Tired Windshield Wiper Blades.

3. Burned out lights.

4. Clogged Filters. Air, oil, gas, and transmission filters ....

5. Worn Spark Plugs.

6. Corroded Battery Cables.

7. Glazed Belts, Rotten Hoses.

8. Neglected Cooling System. Dirty coolant, cracked hoses, leaks....

9. Leaking Shock Absorbers.

10. Damaged CV Joint Boots.

11. Leaking Muffler.

12. Tired Tires.

I would be ok with all of that , I know I dont have all the spare parts I should at the present time, I used them and didnt get replacements yet .

No sweat built every vehicle I ever owned from the ground up. Untill this last purchase the one I am driving now. Did I mention I have 4 trucks not counting the wifes car. My daily driver a Z71 and then 2 are old Chevy K5's and one is an old Datsun 720 when SHTF it pays to be a hunter that likes to play in the mud. But then there is the wifes Honda uh um???? nevermind she can drive the datsun! I also have a shop full of Chevy parts. But honestly you probably won't be able to get gas for the guzzlers. So in thaat case we'll be riding out on horseback! Seriously if it gets to point you can't buy auto parts and repairs then the horses are the best option.

You know, this is a really good post, since we should all be able to do these repairs (and have the spare parts for these repairs) on at least the main transportation vehicle... as well as keeping and rotating the fuel supply. I'm still not sure how much fuel to keep on hand (maybe 20 gallons... maybe more depending on how bad I think it will be), but I know that I need to get belts and filters and exhaust tape and duct tape and hoses for the main buggy. Also, I need to get the bicycle back in working order!

I can make the repairs listed and I have tools to do just about anything.

I would add U joints to that list.

Can keep the truck running. The Crown Vic will just have to suck dirt if it breaks down.

Reminds me when me and another were riding with a friend and we had a tire blow out. He didn't know how to change the tire and when we got the tire off, he wanted to put on the spare which was flat. If me and the other boy wouldn't have been there, things wouldn't have went as smoothly.

Yes, I can. Gone are the days when you could crawl up under the hood and have a seat to work on one but I can make those repairs with no trouble. It's that da**ed engine light that gives me problems.

All of that stuff listed is what I consider routine maintenance, not exactly "repair" work.

I'm not sure how to fix a leaky shock absorber though, other than to just replace it which would be no problem.

As far as repair work. I would put basic stuff like replacing a starter, or water pump, or alternator as "must do" stuff everyone should know/ can do themselves. Fixing a leaky radiator can be tricky and replacing a piston ring is stuff I'd need a little help with though. I suppose I could get in the valve train and fix a stuck or burnt valve if need be. Everything that is peripheral to the motor I think I can handle.

Hoof nippers- check. Hoof knife-check. Grass(looking outside) check. Saddle in good repair,ready to go- check bridle same - check. Stallion and Mares for extra BOV's - Check.

How many folks perform a monthly check on their vehicles? Air filter, fluid levels, tire pressure, wipers, lights work, etc?

Used to work at a garage as a kid and was a motor head! Went from muscle cars to sports cars to trucks.

Yep.

Which reminds me the CV boot on one of my ATV's need replaced :/ Will I do it? Most likely not, rather spend time on my business than doing that repair ;)

I have the tools to do them all + more, but depending on the time and cost to do them I`ll gladly pay someone else tod o something I'd rather not do ;) In an emergency I can do it no problemo or know someone who can.

I don't know how far I would get with my truck, or the other halfs car,(all that computer stuff.) but I have enough stuff in the shop to build a motor, bolt it to a trans(there's a couple of those in the shop.), and put them in the '57 chevy that's behind the shop.:smash:

Most of the list are fairly easy "fixes" especially on an older vehicle like mine (92 cherokee) Have all the needed tools and I inested in a repair manual ( haynes I think) for the stuff I don't know how to do. But growing up a poor country boy I had to learn to do a lot myself or walk

With a Chiltons manual I can take anything apart. Putting it back together might be another matter entirely.

Thats why you should videotape yourself taking it apart,then when you get stuck just rewind to that part and there you go,LOL.

Funny story - When I was getting transferred from Hawaii to Seattle I had a motorcycle (KZ750) and an old beat up car. At the time, the Navy would not ship two vehicles for my pay grade. I too the bike in the elevator (had to pop a wheelie to make it fit) and took it up to my 12th floor apartment. I took it completely apart (no video tape) and put it in multiple wooden crates. When the movers came to pack out my stuff there were a bunch of wooden crates labled packed by owner, a frame and two wheels. When I got to Seattle I picked up a repair book and started putting it back together. When I was done, I had a lot of parts left over.......a lot! A week later I started out on a 60 day, 15,000 mile motorcyle trip. I guess those parts weren't all that important afterall.

Anyone that drives a "Chevy" better know how to work on it + maybe 2 shop's full of parts.
Did you know that Chevrolet was a Sweed from Canada? thats why you need 4 of 'em.

Starter & Alternator is the most common reasons for folks to go to the shop.

I take it you've never owned a Chrysler product. The most common reason for them is ball joints - upper, ball joints - lower, watch spring, wiper motor, bad body seals, oxygen sensor, water pump, heater core, head gasket, engine seals..............

I have owned one Chrysler but not for very long, in our transportation fleet where I work -the Dodge 3500 (we have about 50+) are water pump eaters! we have been on phase out to Ford since 2004 due to government contract and the drop of the 3500 in the line up.
Back to Chrysler products, 1) They have the worst electrical system on the planet, 2) They also have the weakest transmission also! but I-Beamed Fords have them beat on suspect upper ball joints (we have more Fords now than anything else) but the lowers hold up fairly well.
These are all Chrysler 3500 - Ford E350 - Chevrolet Express and there is not enough time to talk on those (we only have 4 left:clap:) and that's just the way it is!
