Which water filter and why?

I really want a water filter. Yes, I know about boiling and purification tabs so please don't bring that up, as I would carry one or both methods as a backup. I am looking to spend under $100, I have seen some really nice high dollar ones and that will probably be on my shopping list someday, but right now that's out of the question.

I have looked at a few and I always seem to come back to the MSR MiniWorks EX or the Katadyn Hiker/ Hiker PRO models.

The Katadyn is well within my budget, but I am unsure wether to get the regular hiker or the PRO, I know that the PRO has a cleanable filter, as does the MiniWorks, however I still don't know if that's exactly what I want. Can somebody tell me the advantage of one over the other? Do the filters you clean have a longer life than ones you just leave in? (that is another thing I'm looking for, long filter life)

As always, your advice is much appreciated.

I can't speak to the advantages or disadvantages of one over the other. I have the Katadyn Hiker and am very pleased with it. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ones you listed.

Is yours the PRO model or not? From what I hear, both will get the job done but the PRO is only like $12 more, so if there is some advantage to a field-cleanable filter (does that extend the life?) I don't mind spending the extra money.

I have a Katadyn Combi. Reason I chose this over the others is this....

Ceramic Filter. Must have a ceramic filter. You will filter 6-10 times the amount of water through the filter and when you weigh the cost of replacement filters, the ceramic being more expensive but not 6-10 times more expensive, there is an inherent cost savings.

Field Repairs. The Combi has no moving parts. Simple plunger with easily replaced rubber gaskets. The lever action of the other filters scares me. All those hinged pieces are failure points.

MSR Mini Works II, I picked it for a number of reasons.
1: has a ceramic filter
2: I can actually work it one handed (try that with one of those bicycle pump type filters)
3: It will screw right into a 1 or 1.5 liter Nalgene bottle
4: It is easily adapted to connect right up to a CamelBak hydration bladder via the drinking tube so I don't have to remove the bladder from my pack to refill it.

This is the one I bought, mainly because it has a long life filter and you can backwash it if needed. Honestly, I haven't tried it yet, because it's in my BOB, which I keep in my truck. With a ceramic filter you can't store it in freezing weather, so I have never wet mine. But I have it if I need it.

MSR Sweetwater Purification System.

It's a two way pump. It pumps on the up and down stroke. Look for that in whatever you buy. It delivers twice the amount of water in the same amount of time as a single stroke pump.

It comes with the pump, an adapter cap to fit Nalgene or other bottles, Virus Guard to kill viruses and a filter cleaning brush. Mine also came with a 1 liter bag but I don't think the new ones do.

The filter is super easy to clean in the field if you have to clean it. It's quick and easy to use and pumps a lot of water in a short amount of time. 1.25 liters a minute is what they advertise and that's about right....in clear water. Silt will slow you down.

If you look around you can get it for around $70 or less if you catch it on sale.

Whatever you get make CERTAIN you keep the inflow tube and the outflow tube separated when not using it. You want the clean water tube to stay clean. I package mine in a zip lock bag by itself. If you package both tubes up together then any giardia, etc that might have been on the inflow tube can cross contaminate the clean water tube and you can still get sick. I've seen a lot of folks make that mistake.

Also, remember that most filters don't kill viruses. You still need to chemically treat the water for viruses if you are in an area that is prone to industrial or agricultural runoff. There are some filters on the market that either have a small enough pore size or add an iodine chamber to kill viruses but most don't. Make sure you know what yours will do.

The MSR will filter 750 Liters of clear water before you have to change filters. Less if you are in silter or dirty water.

I use the MSR MiniWorks most of the time when guiding, for the reasons pointed out above. I also own a couple different models by Katadyn.

A ceramic filter is the way to go. In the field you will clog the filter on a regular basis, a ceramic filter element cleans easily. You can purchase a repair kit for the MiniWorks and with no trouble repair anything that may happen in the field. That's Important!

Currently I use what I think is the equivelent to the MSR Miniworks. I had a Waterworks since 1994-ish (possibly 1995) and loved it for it's capacity to really crank out a large volume of water in a short period of time when I was still doing the wilderness trail crew thing. Small Katadyns are perfect for soloists, but a proper pain in the backside if you need to pump water for dinner for a crew of six.

Anyway, in 1996 while traveling in the pacific northwest I got into some tannin laden streams that caused frequent clogging of my Waterworks for the first time since I owned it. Fortunately I was close to Seattle and stopped by the MSR factory for service. It was the day of the 17 state power outage for four hours and I arrived just as they were getting back up and running. I got one of their bored R&D guys to run through my pump and he did some upgrades, giving me a ceramic filter, removing the final microfilter, and giving it a smaller profile. In any case, I've now been using it for over 13 years intermitently and haven't had a problem since. Definitely a product that's easy to service in the field, requires very little maintenance and is super reliable.

The same can be said for the high end Katydines, but they can't produce the volume of water, so it really depends on your needs which is best for you. Both will last for years and keep you healthy.

I like the 2 liter/min capacity. Pumps on the up stroke and down stroke. Easy to take a part and clean, or should the need arise field repair (comes with spare o-rings). The write up says it all.

We were filtering and then packing 17 gallons of water into our hunting camp. The nearest spring is 3/4 of a mile away from the camp itself.

My buddy's handle broke on his about midway through our filtering tasks. He had to finish by just holding the remaining stem and trying to grip tight enough to keep pumping.

My filter, a brand new one that had never been out of the bag before this trip, managed to filter only about 4 gallons before it became an absolute chore to pump water. I had to physically force the handle down just to get a tiny little trickle of water. The first few 2-liter bottles I was able to fill in a matter of minutes. The last few took more than a half-hour each. Upon examination it appears that the filter had become totally inundated with dirt. Now, we were filtering from a crystal clear mountain spring. In fact, we probably didn't need to filter this water at all, but we aren't willing to take the chance. There is no reason this filter should not have lasted much, much longer.

Uh, the hiker doesn't require cleaning. Are you sure that wasn't the activated carbon that was in the filter instead of dirt? Something doesn't sound right with that one.

Not being critical here but a couple of thoughts. A little duct tape and a tent peg might have given your buddy a new handle.

Yours sort of serves as a lesson of try it before you need it kind of thing.

You stated "Upon examination it appears that the filter had become totally inundated with dirt", well, there's your answer. You just need to start troubleshooting when any filter starts to act 'abnormal'.

I don't know enough about them to know the answer to this question. What we know is that the water was exceptionally hard to pump with my filter after about the 4th gallon and that the filter was very, very brown - whereas my buddy's filter was a pristine white.


Not being critical here but a couple of thoughts. A little duct tape and a tent peg might have given your buddy a new handle. No, no, be critical. That's a great way to learn. You are definitely correct in your observation, but we didn't have those things with us at the time. We were trying to go "ultralight" as far as gear goes as that water was dang heavy all by itself. 17 gallons of water totals about 140 lbs.

The hiker and the hiker pro are both anti-clogging. They don't need to be cleaned. The hiker does contain activated carbon. If you guys were pumping from the same source, his filter was clean and yours was clogged then it had to be from the carbon. Check to make certain yours was assembled correctly. There is also a pre-filter on the end of the intake tube.

You should be pulling 1 liter of water per minute with the Hiker if the water is that clear.
