Colin & "Hank"!

I'm beginning to think that at some point we're going to need a "camp stove" sticky!

I recently posted a blog about the late Colin Fletcher, you can find all the info there. Colin is most known for two things: His record-breaking backpacking trips, & His book(s): "The Compete Walker." 41 years ago a good friend of mine decided that he was going "out West" to look for gold. He also included me & two of my brothers in his plans, & that's how I wound up reading the book "The Man Who Walked Through Time"; by Colin. It details his story about how he was the 1st person to hike continuously through the Grand Canyon. We never went "out West", but a few years later I was living in Colorado & ran into a great deal on a compact Backpacking stove. Waay back in the day you didn't have all of the choices that we have now regarding camping & backpacking gear; & no one ever really heard of a "survival kit". I happened to find a great bargain on the Hank Roberts Mini Backpacking Stove! The link shows a photo of the stove.

You might notice a very dangerous problem with the stove in regards to where the fuel suppy hooks into, right near the burner. I used one of these for quite awhile, & finally wore out the threads on it & threw it away.

In one edition of "The Complete Walker", I think it was III, Colin writes about how he likes the H.R.M.S.. However, Safety-minded politicians did not! So the original stove idea went the way of the Do-Do! Then somehow, the Company was sold to a Denver-based firm & they added a fuel-hose to the stove, keeping the Butane cartridge away from the burner. I now own one of these. However, they were topped by much newer lighter designs & the backpacking public no longer bought the "Hank"; dispite Colin's endorsement in the 4th edition of "The Complete Walker." This resulted in the Company making them to vanish from the face of the earth without a trace! So now the Butane fuel cannisters are not available either, go figure. Anyway, if anybody also owns one of the newer stove models (with the hose), give a shout & I'll tell you how to get substitute fuel cannisters!

Colin Fletcher was the man. I have complete walker iii in my library and refer to it often, though I don't backpack as much any more. I never used a stove, always a fire pit or food packs where there was a fire restriction.
