View Full Version : Water bladder slime...

I am new to water bladders, just got a camelback a month or so ago...I had no idea that you could not leave it filled up in your pack. Well I did and now I have a brown film coating the inside wall. (algae?)

So I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem what would be the best way to get rid of it? I just hung it up in my closet to dry for right now but I was thinking that swishing some vinegar and water around inside might take care of it?

I just spent $26 on the thing so I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask around first.

The vinegar and water probably won't do it. Here are the Camelbak cleaning products:

I'm sure those work good but I was really hoping to find something I can do without spending money, I'm a little low on cash to throw around.

What about baking soda?

You may want to try a little bleach diluted in water. But no guarantee that it's not going to harm the bladder.

Cleaning it with a mild soap and water solution and then rinsing with a mild water/bleach or baking soda solution will clean it out well enough. After cleaning, drying it out is important. Don't forget your drinking tube. It's got the same stuff growing in it. Camelbak (and others) make a small brush that fits the tube (relatively inexpensive).

Ken has it,, a drop of bleach in some clean water should work. Make sure it is the regular unscented type!!!!! When I had to store water in a canteen, or camelback, I did the same, making sure it is a TINY DROP otherwise you could cause yourselfproblems. Just make sure you rinse it completely and if it is going to be stored empty, hang it upside down somewhere dry with the cap off.

SILLY Wabbits, Never drink straight water, fish pee in that water. Real men only drink as follows, 1 part whiskey mixed with 4 parts water. This way the "BUGS" and Algae are still in there, but they are very happy, and don't mess with your digestive system......:smash::smash::smash:

Ludwigvan - No, it doesn't. I have a similar problem with one of mine. I actually had emptied it and thought it was dry but apparently there was some water still inside. I've scrubbed it with soap and hot water and I've let it sit full of bleach water (including the tube) and the discoloration doesn't come off. The only thing I'm sure of is the bag is disinfected. I've drank out of it since it discolored with no ill affects.

Clean it out with soap and water then add a bit of bleach and let it sit. That should kill any buggies that might have been growing and disinfect it. I'm afraid the discoloration is there to stay. At least mine appears to be.

Yup,I have recieved a full set of embossed plastic glasses,with stirrers,napkins,invitations to special "tastings",gift wrap with tags,that is just part of it,been getting stuff from them for a few years now.

Thanks everyone, Hopefully I can get it taken care of. I just hung it out to dry in my closet so the slime is probably all crusted on by now...I'll try a few things, the vinegar first, I'm pretty sure you can't hurt it that way, then hot water & soap or baking soda and if that doesn't work I'll use bleach.

I have had good luck with Polident tablets (the ones used to clean dentures).

I don't think I'd put dentures back in my mouth after they had been in a toilet. That just ain't right.

Beats the heck out of using toilet cleaner in your denture cup.
