Haven't tried the newer MRE's I can't speak from experience there. But give me an old C-rat, and I'll whip out my TRUSTY old P-38 open a can and devour what ever is in there. 40 years old or 100 years old. I trust them. A LOT harder to puncture a can than a foil pouch. The only advantage to the MRE's is lighter weight. Disadvantage is using water to rehydrate food. We used to set the cans on engine manifolds to warm them up, or drop in boiling water. I wouldn't do that with an MRE.

Yep - that's why they're called Meals Ready To Eat. You can heat them with the little heaters that come with them (sometimes sold separately on civilian versions) or heat them up in a pot of hot water before opeining. Of course - they're not bad cold either.

When I was in the Army and we started getting them they had Dehydrated strawberries and some other stuff that you had to add water to. I remember the strawberries 'cause they were the best thing about the MRE's. Those darn cakes were worthless though you couldn't even use them to feed birds.
And the there was the other dehydrated stuff we rarely got called LRRP's rations,I really liked the flavor of the Chili and Rice one. I just never liked using my water on my food. Water in the field was sometimes difficult to get.

Nope. The bars were fresh and moist. Actually, I'm quite pleased with all of the MRE menus that come with a MEAT entree. :)

Mmmm Two of the seven Italian ration modules (B and F) contain an item called "Cordiale/bevanda alcolica", or Cordial/alcoholic beverage. This is a 3 cl "shot" of a brandy-like liquor in a plastic bottle. The specification for this particular ration item say it must be no less than 70 proof (40°) alcohol and "Its appearance should be clear, pale yellow amber, with a pleasing smell and taste."

Pal, I've looked at military rations from around the world. In many cases, I'd rather eat squirrel. Squirrel chili, that is. Never acquired a taste for squirrel stew.
