View Full Version : Drop Point Hunter knife

Here is another one I got done. I am not to happy with the finish. It will be a great user but its the small details that bug me. I was going to sell it on another knifemakers forum but I wasn't happy with the finish. There is some liner material between the tang and the cocobolo.It shrank a bit and left a hair line space in the front and the back. It has no ill effect on the knife mechanics but it is not how I like them to come out. It also has a couple of small scratches that bug me, but I am never happy. You can see it in the middle pic. I was pleased with the cocobolo wood it is dang pretty don't ya think.

It is 1/8" ats34 steel hardened to RC 59-60. The handle slabs are cocobolo wood treated with teak oil and beeswax. it is 8.25" over all and the blade is a tad bit under 4" from handle to tip.

If I could make something like that, I wouldn't want to use it. I'd probably put it on display somewhere. :innocent:

Well, I'll step up to the plate again and let you ship those "bad" knives to Sarge. He deserves them for all of the great work he does! Your use of the wood grain does an excellent job in fooling the eye. It gives the knife an exaggerated angle on the handle. I REALLY like that. It flows very well from both directions and you did a very nice job matching the grain. There is nothing about that knife I don't like.

I understand the lack of satisfaction in turning something out. I'm the same way with my woodwork. I know where the flaws are even if others don't see them and it's hard sometimes for me to look past them to see the finished product.

There is, or course, one very real problem with that knife. It's in your hands, not mine. So send them to Sarge, ok?:innocent:

Wow! That's that first time I've ever seen a blurry post come through like that! I think what Sarge is trying to say is he should be the one to get the knife; and I sure do agree!

The man creates a useful work of art and the only thing each of you can think about is a way to get your slimey hands on it. You're both trying to con this man! Just makes me sick........

And NEITHER of you even give a hoot about the fact that it hasn't been submitted to Quality Control for a full review yet.

To my eye that's a perfect match of wood type and grain to blade shape & that don't happen that often. You are guaranteed to see a little scratch as big as the Grand Canyon and won't be noticed by anyone but a collector. That's perfect for the type of pouch sheath you didn't like on the other you posted, showing a little more wood. That's just my opinion, no difference in anything a person makes, I can always see my mistakes even if they aren't seen by anyone else. You done good!

Hey pancho take pity on a poor pitiful newbie who doesn't have a decent custom made(or any custom made for that matter) knife. Orfailing that you could donate it to that little camporee in Indiana. That might be enough incentive to make it there.
