This should be interesting. Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up in case no one knew this was going to be on. It's a what if scenario after a pandemic. Commercials over gotta' go.

This show just might be interesting!! not much on TV interests me nowadays, but this...this has promise. If nothing more than for me to ask how would I do that or what would I do differently.

I watched it while I surfed the net.

Heres a summary

Ten minutes of commercials.
Two guys show up on motorcycles at night and everyone goes into a panic.
They make coffee and all is well with the world
Ten more minutes of commercials
The end

Top it off - let it idle

Here was my hope:
A bunch of normal folk put somewhere with a pile of junk and told to figure out how to build some sort of sustainable existence.

Here's the reality:
A bunch of people with carefully selected, conflicting personality disorders put in a completely contrived post apocalyptic scenario complete with "bad guys" that can't really be bad.

I'm not sure how these people manage to actually be scared or as pissed off as they seem with the camera crew hanging out. I don't really care about their psychology... it's reality TV! There's NO danger (except maybe wiring those car batteries the wrong way... ZAP!). I want to see how creative they are. I want to see their solutions to little everyday things that a lot of people take for granted. I guess that doesn't get the ratings though.

Final analysis... Too contrived. Too bad.

Yeah but that's TV - Even Bear Grylls and Les Stroud have a rescue team... just in case.Although Les is closer to the "edge". Let's face it in todays society there just not that many that want to "back" an Evel Knievel in this sort of thing... someone who is willing to take that "Ultimate Risk", all or nothing. But it does make me think "what would I do?"

But it does make me think "what would I do?"

I think you've pointed out the one element that gave the show promise. Given the resources at hand, what would I be able to come up with. It's like Swiss Family Robinson in a junkyard.

There are enough challenges just trying to get along and try to build something sustainable from scavenged materials. Having some people bang on the doors at night to simulate the threat of bad guys from the outside is just plain silly. Real bad guys would rip the doors down, shoot the men, rape the women, eat the food and go on their merry way. Since it's not real and can never be real, leave it off.

What can be real is putting them in a situation where they are in an environment that is carefully stocked with a bunch of junk that would be reasonable to find under those conditions and in that setting and tell them to sink or swim. No outside help - just the option to leave if you can't cut it or your health or safety is at risk. Adding the "Mad Max" fake fear factor cheapens everything interesting about the show.

I hate to admit it... I will probably catch another episode to see if they can get past the drama and move on to something interesting but if last night was an indication of what to expect two episodes will be two too many.

Anyone watch last night's episode?

Sometimes I wish I was on one of these shows, cause man sometimes the people are stupid.

For one, they cared little about security. Ya, common sense says the Discovery channel isn't going to have paid thug actors rampage them raping and beating, but if they really wanted to be realistic they didn't really secure their compound. For one, it is way too big of a structure to secure, for two, it has a second story. The obvious solution is to pull a "Robin Hood Prince of Theives (Kevin Costner version)" and take safety in the trees. IE, live on the second story and either destroy the stairs and use ladders or put up barricades. That way if your walls are breached you have the advantage of height and all your important possessions are up high. This is why castles were built the way they were.

Second thing you could do is put down spikestrips near the doors incase they tried to ride them down with their motocycles.

... but I digress. Did you see the giant reflective thermal blanket thing they were tossing around in their search for a pipe? I wonder if they realize how quickly and easily they could make a solar thermal device (either for cooking, or water heating) out of that.

And also I kinda agree with Crash, they do seem like they're acting a little bit, but they could have been schooled by the producers to act like the situation is real as much as possible, or risk being kicked out. Ie, no comments about not worrying about the bikers because Discovery Channel wouldn't want the legal liability of the bikers being violent.

Oh, and why has no one even gone up to the roof yet? And why would they be so stupid as to want to light the place at night. Or put up a giant wood fire that produces black smoke visible from very far away. Might as well put a big arrow saying "We're over here, come beat and steal our stuff." If... you know... they were trying to be realistic.

crashdive123
07-29-2009, 01:42 PM
Yeah - watched it last night. The "making stuff" part of the show was very cool I thought. Building a wood gassification system to power a small Briggs & Straton motor, and hookin it up to an alternator to charge a bank of batteries was pretty instructive. I found the continual explanations by the Discovery staff psychologists of so many of their actions to be a bit annoying.

Jonesy
07-29-2009, 01:51 PM
I didn't watch it last night. I saw the first one.

I would have a wire accross the yard where the motorcycles come through. About neck high would work.

You put a head on a stick just outside the compound and they will look elsewhere for easier prey.

Since they find everything else they need how about some gas and a garden sprayer for the bikers. Anyone got a match?

Let them ride up close to ya and toss that pipe thru the front spokes. Entertaining and effective.

I know it is a tv show.
Nevermind.

You know Chris just brought up some valid things I just added to the "sticky" Basic survival, and what a Real survival situation is like in those kinds of situations.
I wish the "producers" or whatever would come to a real site like this and ask some of you guys to do the "show" instead of those with PHD's out the wazoo. It would be MORE realistic than what they are showing. Who knows maybe they are "LURKING" out there and picking your brains for ideas. Sorry I missed most of the show only caught the bit about the "Gassifier", that was kinda' cool.

They've been on here a time or two. They generally log on looking for folks that want to be a part of a show. Of course, they are logging on to other web sites that look like this but are far and away much less knowledgeable and all around yucky, looking for folks there, too. (shrug) Maybe that's where they get them.

the wood gas contraption was interesting. They seem to be wasting to much time and effort on keeping the electricity going.
I would think security, water and food would be the priorities in their scenario. Maybe they could fab some kind of compressed air cannon/gun.
I missed the first show but caught it last night. In the first episode were they given any objectives or goals?

You hit on a lot of the security points/concerns/mistakes except the biggest one I've seen. If you'll notice when they show the front gate there is a BIG BLACK ARROW spay painted on the fence that points to the gate. I think the first act of business would be to remove the arrow.

I agree. They seem to be wasting too much time, trying to keep life "Normal". Not enough time (condidering the Scenario the producers chose) thinking about the survival aspects I would be considering in this given situation. Not a thought to keeping out "undesirables" ( those with contagious diseases they have no medicine for) not really. Yes I'd be "scrounging' and foraging...But VERY little Thought has been given to the "World outside" I've been thinking about this some recently, and it seems as if they are more concerned with "riding the ratings coat-tails" of their other popular survival type shows.

I watched it for the first time and quite frankly 1/3 of those schmucks i would have tossed out to the brigands or used as long pig. They rolled over a car to get at the alternator, well the damm thing was leaking gas.....can you say molotov cocktail!!!!! No security on their pantry so of course it was raided and they lost 2 days supplies. Good thing I wasn't picked for the show.

pocomoonskyeyes

Just 1/3? SARKY you are being nice tonight, you must have had a really good night. I'd say half. I missed the first 15 minutes but really where is the producers/writers minds at? Escape from New York with Kurt Russell was more Realistic(given the scenario) and more entertaining... But at least it is new,not a rerun.

I like the concept too but why does everyone have a degree in this or that?Or some sort of expertise in a certain area. Are they Implying that everyday "normal" folks just wouldn't have a chance? I believe that some more Normal everyday Joes would have as much of a chance as these So called EXPERTS would. I mean my choice would be a Cop, a nurse or EMT, a mechanic from the neighborhood garage ( that would be the grand total of My specialized skills) and some miscellaneous people to fill in the "ranks". What about Kids, not even a boy scout is on there and we all know a boy scout would be an improvement over their present choices. C'mon let's be a little more realistic here. Even a homeless Vet would be an improvement.

Chris
08-05-2009, 06:17 PM
Well it looks like they did use the reflective insulation I saw to build a solar thermal heater, but they used plexiglass for a shower roof for some dumb reason and used saran wrap around the heater. You want to insulate your heater as much as possible, and plexiglass is far better. What is more, they left it open on top, lots of heat escaping.

Then they got their kitchen raided because they had no concept of layered security. ie, don't just worry about defending your perimeter, make sure you can fall back to additional layers of security, and make sure your most valuable possessions are inside the deepest layer. The kitchen needed to be made secure or moved to a more secure part of the building.

SARKY
08-05-2009, 06:41 PM
Hell the shower they built simply put another hole in their perimeter, how stupid is that?
Why not build the shower inside the building? it's not like they are lacking for space.
I really wish the producers would have told the pantry thieves to do it stealthy so that these idiots wouldn't have known that they had their grub stolen until some time after the diversion had ended. I think that would have been a much ruder awakening for them.

sort of! I still can't believe that with 50% of the American population owning guns, none of these nitwits have one! I still say that half of these idiots need to be culled from the gene pool. Hey SARKY wasn't that an HK I saw in there too?The guy manning the ma deuce had it in his hands right after they pulled in and stopped, as he was "scanning the area"? All that stuff they traded for and never tried to trade for a single round of AMMO even!! Well Just when I think they're going to get their head out of their "fouth point of contact" they blow it!!! Is there not a single VET among them? No VET No COP? yeah this is staged and POORLY. This program had such POTENTIAL. It is interesting though, now I know what priorities a bunch of "Intellectuals" would consider tops. Those Traders could've killed every one of them and TOOK what they had.

crashdive123
08-12-2009, 07:04 AM
I did tune it in last night. The "staging" of this is just too bs for me to watch another episode. No fire arms in the group, and they readily invite a very heavily armed group into their compound to barter with? IMO the show is way too scripted to be believable.

panch0
08-12-2009, 11:05 AM
Yea and that one lady was kind of loosing control cause she knows it is staged. The two guys bartering were acting tough cause I beieve you need to make the other people respect you at time like those. If the stuff really hits the fan there needs to be better team work and knowing whats at stake for the group if outsiders sense a weakness. Other than that it is starting to look like expedition africa. I will give it one more shot next week.

Ok the episode tonight was a little more real to me at least. Having been homeless and in a situation sort of similar to what was presented tonight. The "Outsiders" came in and created Havoc. The main difference was that I had established some "rules" from day 1. It took them(people on the show) Weeks to get to this point. The suspicion of outsiders was something very real to me. Everyone that was "new" to my camp was "on probation" whether they knew it or not. Most of the Street people knew my rules and the severity of violating camp. They knew if they even walked by they were being watched, they knew that we would defend what was ours,as little as it was. I was pretty upfront about consequences. No one ever crossed the lines while I was there. So finally near the end there is finally a ray of truth to what it would be like. No you can't distrust everyone (maybe you can, but I can't) and you have to be willing to accept new people, but at the same time you have to be willing to repel "undesirables' to your community in this situation. FINALLY something that spoke reality to me!!!
