View Full Version : Why do people use Twitter?

Thanks for this great forum. This is my first post to the forum and I wonder what you people think.

Why people use Twitter? What motivates people to use Twitter? Any ideas? Its about news or comments?

Now, why would somebody in Europe come on to a Wilderness Survival forum and ask such a question? If you're serious, how about an introduction over here http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14 Thanks.

Interesting question, I will do some research and set up some polls and get back with you in a few months.

Don't know...don't care.

Twitter seems to be the ultimate in narcissism. It is rather vain to think that people want to know what you are doing 24/7. And it is rather sad to think that some people are actually interested in what someone else is doing 24/7.

This "everybody is a celebrity" thing is getting pretty old.

I actually have no idea what it is.

Twitter is one of those things that can be completely useless and vain as was mentioned or a way to communicate quickly out to a group of interested people. It's basically a way to send a short text message to a large community. Think of it as mass texting (and we all LOVE to text... don't we?). Like all tools, it's value is directly related to it's use.

The recent unrest in Iran is an interesting example of how Twitter was used to communicate information out to the broader world from a country that was desperately trying to limit coverage. The accuracy of the information, like any social media, should always be suspect but it was fascinating to see this very superficial tool used to promote freedom of speech.

This is an odd topic for the forum but in the context of urban survival or communications during a crisis, it's worth understanding what Twitter is.

Twitter is a tool that allows a person to send a limited character text message via the web or via their cell phone. That message is then distributed out to a large number of people who are "following" your "tweets". I've never used it so I don't know if you can make the messages private and limit the people who receive your message or not.

As it relates to this forum, in the event of a SHTF incident, you could rapidly communicate out to a group of people where you are, where to go or what to do. Since it happens quickly and automatically, it's possible that you could get an important bit of information out before phone lines become overwhelmed. Instead of making ten phone calls you send one "tweet". Obviously this is a technology that is dependent on many things and can be easily monitored, easily jammed up or simply turned off.

At its most basic level, people are using it to send messages to say, "Hey! I'm at the food court eating a slice of Pizza.". Who cares. When it's someone in the middle of a riot sending a message out to the world that protesters are being beaten by police at such and such location it becomes a more interesting tool.

Just looked. You can set up private accounts. "Private" is a relative term because I'm sure it's not intended as confidential or secure.

One other scenario is that you have a group of folks that receive your messages. You could then send a quick message out to the group saying you're hitting X trail and will be back at Y time and that you will shoot them a message when you return. You have to cram that into 140 characters but you have some redundancy knowing that 8 people received the note instead of one person who never checks their voicemail.

Also consider this scenario... you're out on a hike, you're injured and really don't want to crawl out. You really don't want to wait until people decide you're overdue and start SAR into your location. You have your cell phone and by some miracle have a signal but you forgot to turn it off so the battery is nearly tapped. You need to get a message out but really have one quick shot. You could text a distress out to a large number of people in one short burst. Why not dial 911? That's an option to be sure. However, in a wilderness rescue I have known of instances where a cell phone call has hit a tower across the divide and the 911 operator had no clue where the person was or how to handle a wilderness emergency. 911 really wants a street address.

Are all of these scenarios contrived? Of course. I'm absolutely not trying to sell anyone on Twitter. I don't use is and only understand it because my company uses it to communicate to customers and media. However, I do think it's important to understand what technologies are out there that can be leveraged to your advantage.

Twitter is what happens in the bathroom hours after eating peanuts without removing the shells.

I joined Twitter and wish I hadn't. Now I feel like a Twit(which is why I think it's named what it is). It may have some uses but it takes some imagination to come up with any that would benefit me.

Twitter. LOL. That's all I need.

Let's see, I have a 24/7 cell phone. On the weekends.........don't call as I won't answer.

I have a computer that sometimes I think I should get off my arse and do something. Oh yeh, I do, on the weekends so don't call me.

Oh and another thing, if you call and I don't answer. Leave a message, a FREAK'N DETAILED MESSAGE!!!!!!!!!!

Not some bogus, "Hey, this is so and so, call me." You stupid bastards.........I know who it is as I see the number by your dumbarse name. So, I have to waste my time and go into my mail to hear your stupid arse telling me to call you. You dumb bastard, of course I'm going to call you if your name pops up.

Maybe now, since you left that stupid duh, message, I won't call you. Hang there you dumbass.

Oh yeh and did I mention, don't call me on the weekends you dumb SOB.

Oh, so you're a smartypants and you text me. Do you really think I'm going to text you back? Why would I text you when I could call you. Only person that gets texted is my wife, when I'm in the woods and I want to let her know that I'm going to be late. You know why I don't want to call? Cause I don't want to hear her get upset............LOL............or I'll text her a very racy message while she's out with the ladies.

If you are not my wife, don't text me you dumb SOB. And again DON'T CALL ME ON THE WEEKENDS!!

Frank. You can solve that problem the way I did. 14 phone lines - no voice mail on ANY of them. Need to leave a message? Text my cell phone or e-mail me.

I have given in to facebook and also to myspace but I refuse to join anything else like twitter! When I lived in NY, I felt compelled to let my family and friends know my whereabouts all the time otherwise they freaked and worried about me because it wasnt in my character to not keep in contact for more than an hour! IT got crazy soo that would be one of the reasons I moved to OR....3000 miles away from home, no one to answer to except myself....I LOVE IT! So in my opinion...Booo to Twitter!

Why would anyone living in NYC want to tell the world where they are going and what they are doing? Sounds like a predator's version of heaven.

I don't twitter, facebook, myspace, or whatever. I wouldn't know how to reply to a text on the cell phone and text-speak gives me a headache. In fact, when I recently had to replace my old cell phone, it was very difficult to get the little salesgirl to understand that I want it to ring and take voice mail. That's it. No camera, no iTunes, no internet and no blackberries. And I only need 300 minutes a month, not some $160/month megabill. I ended up with a phone they didn't even keep out on the sales shelf. The friggin power and headphone ports are color coded too. I think they described it as 'the old folks phone'. LOL.

Well I must confess the only reason I joined My Space and Twitter was so my kids(out of state) could contact me THEIR way.I guess E-Mail is too OLD fashioned or something. And to think that phone cord extensions were GREAT when you could get those and walk around in the kitchen and raid the fridge while talking on the phone. Man I miss those days.

Rick
07-20-2009, 10:44 PM
Oh yeah. Slap a 25 foot line cord and a 25 foot receiver hand cord (RHC for those in the know) on your phone then you could talk AND go to the store.

I was going to post something very similar!
I have a pay as you go mobile phone and use about 40 per year credit. I have a house phone and e-mail, If I don't answer either then that pretty much tells you I'm not there. I have these things for my convenience, not others! :)

One technology I am excited about is Skype. Our oldest daughter is going to college in the fall and we are headed back to Brazil sometime in the fall as well. This will be hard on me. She's out in MI right now and we talk on Skype with the camera on and it's not so bad. The world is a much smaller place.

I can see how Twitter might have its uses but not for me. Mac
