Hello everyone.

I'm a young european man at a turning point in my life.

The past 3-4 years have really got me thinking about how dependant i have become on technology, and other people. How utterly helpless i am without it or just in general. I cannot change a tire on a bike - i need someone to do it. Least of all do i know how to start a fire without a heatsource, navigate after the stars or find edible in the wild. I'm in good physical shape, and that's a good starting point.

The time has come for a change. While im not going all McCandless' i am most certainly going to change my life in a positive direction. I will no longer be a slave to money or a job that i hate just because it pays well. I will find one that i love, and adjust my life accordingly. I will no longer be a vicarious slave to computers and the internet. I will go outside and experience things at first hand. I will go out and meet new people with an open mind. And finally (and perhaps most importantly) i will learn to become self-sufficient enough that i can rely on myself in as many situations as possible. That's the goal - not being helpless.

In less than 14 days i'm going 3 months to Arizona to work as a volunteer in restoring the grand canyon as well as monitoring wildlife in the vicinity. I'm sure this will be a rewarding and great experience and i'm really looking forward to this first step of getting back in touch with nature and myself.

I quit my job to do it. When i'm back home, the road lies open. I'm currently considering a long term wilderness survival training. The idea of having a mentor teaching my basics of surviving on my own is appealing. The problem is that most courses provided by schools around the world seem to last only from as little as 2 days to MAYBE 2 weeks. I do not believe that i can learn enough in such a short time. It will be too shallow. I'm looking for a more longterm commitment, preferably 3 months to a year or perhaps longer.

Currently the only one i've found to offer longterm courses is The Wilderness Awareness School in WA ( ***************** which offers a 9 months course. Pricing is a little steep (10 grand plus expenses and accomodation) i was hoping to find something of similar length at around half this price.

Anyway, i shall continue my research some more. Meanwhile i'm interested in inputs and ideas from you guys.

Welcome Caveman.......Suggest you try to get on as employee of one of the remote Alaskan or Canadian Hunting/Fishing Lodges. Or get work as a Packer/camp helper, then Get a Assistant Hunting Guides License, and serve an apprenticeship. or hire on as an apprentice trapper, and work a trap line. There are many avenue's to becoming a skilled outdoors man, and more pay wages. Remember it is for sure that you will die some day, You might as well live a life worth living, and a thrilling adventure. Enjoy your life, enjoy the forum.

Maybe I'm missing something (happens a lot) but if you are leaving Europe in 14 days how are you going to attend a long term survival course? Or did you mean during your volunteer work or following it?

you should look into a program called earthwalk northwest. it is also here in washington you can find them online easily just do a google search for the name. (i dont want to post the URL in this post). i have enrolled for the 2009 program. ive sat in on a couple classes and met with the instructors and it seems very promising. there are only the 2 instructors aside from whatever outside experts they bring in and they only take a maximum of 12 students a year so it is very personal and hands on. the two instructors used to be head instructors at the tom brown tracker school. i also liked the fact that all the skills they teach are bushcraft specific. none of this hippy-drippy "permaculture" stuff. which has its place but isnt necessarily what you are after in a wilderness/bushcraft apprenticeship.
and its a lot less than 10 grand.

Oneraindog - the only reason I edited the URL was because on a first post like CavemanDiary's I just want to make sure it isn't spam. If you'd like to offer a link, as long as it isn't your site or one you're affiliated with, please feel free.

Hello everyone and thank you for the warm welcome. I apologise for not introducing myself in the introduction section. I usually have a habit of lurking and it didn't cross my mind. I am not in any way affiliated with that school other than having an interest.

I am glad that other people understand. And i wholeheartedly agree with your statement. Finding employment in ways you suggest sounds thrilling, but i am not sure that anyone would want a complete rookie. For that i am. This is why i'm looking into some form of schooling beforehand. Nonetheless, your suggestion is much appreciated. For some reason, alaska has always been drawing to me - i do not know why. Maybe it's just a romantic illusion of a beautiful snowcovered and harsh landscape.

Sorry for not being clear - when i come back from volunteering, that'l be in 3 months and 14 days.

I shall introduce myself properly during the week.

Michael,

I think it's great that you've taken the steps necessary to find happiness. That should always be first and foremost. Don't worry about not having any skills. Everyone on this forum was without skills at some point in their life. Some learned skills sooner than others, that's all. The important part is you've start down the road. And let me suggest that you do not have to replace one life with another or one set of skills and knowledge for another. They can live hand in hand. In other words, knowing how to start a fire with flint and steel is an important skill. Knowing how to submit your resume online is, too. You can do both in this world. Knowing which you want to do more often, I think, is the key.

I actually did find those, but skipped them because it looked as if all of their courses were really short. I'm not native english so i may misunderstand this but:

"The Earthwalk Northwest Apprenticeship Program is a year-long, intensive wilderness program designed to develop the inner spirit through learning to live in accordance with the laws of the natural world"

How do i understand this? That the programs run year long and you can sign up for them at any time, or that the program lasts an entire year? If it's the latter then i am indeed interested.

Hehe, you're right. It's easy to get carried away. I try to keep my perspective. For the moment i really do wish to distance myself from a life evolving around - money - ambition (the malicious kind) - abundant technology - doctrines, traditions and social norms that make no sense to me.

There are things that i do wish to keep. The taste of fruit cider. Family and friends. Rock music. Lifting weights.

So it's more a rearrangement of priorities and a shift in mindset rather than starting a completely new life. I believe that the pursuit to happyness starts from within.

And this time i'm going to follow my heart rather than my pocket. I'm going on unstable soil just to see if i can keep balance. Get lost just to see if i can find my way back - you know what i mean i'm sure.

Funny thing about getting lost - when i was a kid i remember moving to a new neighbourhood. It was a large park. A great place to live, but it was new to me. Even as little i was always very reserved and cautious, but for some reason my favorite game to play with a friend was "Get lost" which involved biking the park in random directions specifically going for places i had not seen before, and ultimately trying to find my way home. Despite it's (at the time of perception, huge size) I always managed. But as the months passed i got to know the entire neighbourhood and the game eventually died out.

i dont think its your english. i wasnt totally clear on it at first either :)
they do offer short term programs usually lasting a couple days up to a week. these are usually held in the summer months and you can elect to take those as separate, individual courses or as supplement to the year long program

what you want to look at is the "primitive living apprenticeship". this is a 9 month program that covers all the relevant bushcraft and wilderness survival skills. you meet with the instructors on their property 2 days a week to learn/practice skill sets. this is punctuated with short stays in the wild and finally at the end of the program a week long stay to put all you have learned in to play.
as i said they enroll 12 students every year. it starts in october and i think they still have room.

Caveman I would also like to welcome you as well. I am new as well but have had to use some of the skills you mentioned a time or two. My game as a child was the same as yours except instead of an urban setting I walked two blocks and was in the wilderness/woods.Learning some of the basic skills are fairly easy. There are many books on these subjects And My personal favorite of all time is "Outdoor Survival Skills" by Larry Dean Olsen. This was the only thing I wanted for my 16th birthday. I couldn't find it (Way before the internet) but my Dad did and to me This was THE ONLY book I trusted for survival skills for a long time. It teaches you How to Live off the land with basically nothing from society. As it's Author lives in the Western US it covers some plants, and things you may encounter while you are in the Grand Canyon. Seems like a good place to start, if you want. It's not that big of a book and covers all the basics.

Well that's a start. Pity that it's only two days a week, i was hoping for 5. Also they offer no accomodation?

But it's a lead in the right direction for sure.. :)

Thank you. I'm going to order that book, it might just give a good read while im in Arizona.

I've always enjoyed literature, but reading a book and applying it out in the field are two entirely different things :sailor:

It sounds like a bit of maturity to me. Water always finds its equilibrium. If we are lucky and listen to our inner selves, we will, too. The older we get the more we recognize what is really important in our lives.

Touch Rick :sailor:

I do feel above my years (i am 23 by the way) compared to most of my peers, but having an idealistic way of living is one thing - being able to pursue that dream is entirely another.

Any thoughts on survival training schools that are longterm and preferably offer accomodation?

Unless you have a large amount of $$$ for the outlay, I think that Hope offered the best advice. Get a job or apprenticeship that will afford you the opportunity to learn the things that you are searching for.

I agree. Not only will you learn the skills from the ground up but you will be able to earn an income at the same time. To me, that's a lot better than paying someone to teach you, attending a school and having no income or having to work at a job you don't want, which is what you are doing now, to pay for the school and live.

I have about 7 grand available for this venture, so i'm not hard pressed for cash.

Remember, i'm european and getting work in the US is not something that is easily done. AFAIK, you need special working permits and prove that the job you are performing cannot be performed by the local citizens (i.e it requires a high education) which it doesn't.

Going to school however is a different matter.

CD as far as having skills that locals do not is not really relevant, it's not necessarily about education,as much as desire. You could apply for a job that no one else is applying for. Lord knows there are enough migrant farm workers from other countries here in the US... not many Americans want that kind of job. Your language skills alone could be a qualifying factor, if they are getting someone form a country whose language you speak. Don't count yourself down until they tell you no. If I understand this kind of job they wouldn't just cut you loose with clients.they would place you with an experienced guide first.
