I have a Black bear running lose in my area and was wondering how to protect my self if i came across it.i know a gun would be a good answer but i am thirteen and dont carry ruger revolvers.

the highest percentage oleo capsicum bear pepper spray you can buy legally where you live. It should be at least 10%. Try to get higher %. Never friviolously use bear spray on a person as it will really mess them up badly.

I have bears in the yard several times per week. Black Bears & Grizzly Bears. I just yell at them, and throw rocks if necessary, but generally just yelling at them, and running toward them, gets them moving. What ever you do, "DO NOT" run away from any bear.
There is nothing funny about that! If I could actually outrun a 13 year old, now that would be funny.

I believe I could out run a bear if I happened across one, due to the fact he would be slipping in the S#@! he scared out of me.
Seriously tho I would go with the O.C bear spray until your old enough and been properly trained to use a firearm.
I sort of liked the one guys approach of taking the bear on with a knife. That could work. Might not but it could.

you probaly could outrun me. im not the fastest kid on the football feild but put me isn some backwoods and i could outrun alot of stuff

If you're ever lost in bear country with absolutely no other option, a long spear type implement works great. Aside from that (And considering you actually DO have other options) I much more highly suggest the bear spray. Just don't go up trees trying to get away. They stand too tall on their hinds, and they can climb.

First, IF you have an escaped bear my guess is Fish and Game is going to be pretty quick to corral it. Second, your odds of running into it are pretty remote. I doubt it want's to see you any more than you do it. Third, Hoosierarcher told you to get bear spray and Hope lives with them every day so I'd pay real close attention to what he says.

The pepper bear spray is a good choice. We keep some handy at the barn and house in case of a close encounter.
One thing I have been using lately is a compressed air powered horn. When the bear comes near my house or animals I give it a couple of blasts and they usually scurry off. I am afraid though at some point they will get used to hearing the blast and not respond at all. Lately, the bears are not scaring off too easily. The next step will be M80s or something similar.

I still find to date it's best to be familiar with how to act to keep bear attacks to a minimum. There were some great suggestions with the M80's, air horn, and bear spray, but it's always best to know what to do if caught off guard without these things.
If they do start chasing you, bears can cover up to 55 yards in 3 seconds. Running is just moronic. If you know there's a bear in the area your best bet is to make a decent amount of noise. Sing, clap your hands, whatever you can. They tend to stay away from loud animals, and it makes sure you never run face to face with one on a trail.
If one does confront you and act intimidating, act intimidated. This doesn't mean to turn and run. This means you should cower, make soft soothing noises if possible. There are actually stories of hikers getting angry bear to leave them alone by slowly backing away while singing a soft lullaby.

Now if you try everything to keep em from attacking, fog horn, bear spray, and M-80's included and they still attack they suggest curling into a ball to play dead. I still say it's just so you remember to get your head between your legs to kiss your rear end goodbye.

Bugger hasn't come back ever sense we started to keep food INSIDE the house ;)

If I were you, I would just not go out alone or in a situation where you're at risk to get into trouble. I would go ahead and carry pepper spray and don't get into any trouble with it.

I do not know much or rather anything about bears, but I do know that animals if felt threatened will defend themselves. I think yelling from a safe distance is ok but I question the idea of running towards them. That might just put them on the defensive, what if cubs are nearby in the bushes? Now you have a momma bear thinking you are attacking her cubs. Not good at all.

Yea, I am a Bear viewing WHORE. With expenses it will still run about $12,000.00 for 15 days afield. But they will leave with a Masters of Science in Brown Bear Behavior.

Dear sweet toughsord, just do what uncle Hope says and ignore the rest of these hooligans. As for bear spray....they don't sell it at Walmart anymore because they are afraid of being sued by the families of those attacked/killed by bears after they sprayed the stuff. If Walmart is scared of it, then you should be too. Carry an air horn and don't run away.

If it seems to be hiding and sneaking when you see it, you may b in trouble... black bears act like that when they are stalking you... though pretty rare.. dont turn your back, back off slow.... if you hafta run.. run downhill... they wont follow nearly as fast downhill cuz they are hind heavy and would tumble a** over end... I've run into quite a few black bears and honestly they are more scared of you 90% of the time... remain calm and dont dont dont turn and run.. climbing up a tree aint to smart either.. I read an article where a grizzly followed a lady up over 30 feet in a tree and ate her...

I have been stalked many times by both Black Bears and Grizzly Bears, however this behavior is much more common in Grizzly Bears, and is rare in Black Bears. The First time it happened I let the Grizzly get to close to the client who was Photographing its stalk. To make a long story short, at some point as the bear got too close, I started talking to the stalking bear, I said, "Go on, get out of here"; well the client thought I was talking to him. He bolted 15 feet, before I could yell, "Stop". The Bear mistook his flight as a sign of fear, and His (The Bears) superiority, the bear ran at him, but He (the Bear) stopped when I ran between bear and client, as I knew he would. The client got some nice photo's and I got a nice Tip after the hunt. If you have the situation covered, (read a big firearm, and lots of bear experience) It is really very interesting to watch a bear stalk you, you can learn a lot about how it moves, and how poorly it uses cover for stalking. It will hide it's head only, and leave 900 pounds of body in plain sight. They stalk in an ever tightening spiral. They will stop the stalk sometimes if they think you see them, only to restart the stalk if you look down or somewhat away.

Hope knows his stuff. I have run across a few on my hikes. First, try not to startle them. Then back away slowly and let them leave on their own. They usually do. If they charge, don't run. You can also carry bear bells to help not scare them, and pepper spray in case they charge.
By the way, a gun only works if: it is big enough, you have time to pull it out and aim, you can actually hit something with that much adrenaline in your blood.
It is also helpful to be able to tell the difference between black bear scat and grizzly scat. It is pretty easy, actually. Basically, the difference is the black bear scat looks like regular bear scat while the grizzly bear scat is sort of like regular bear scat with little bells in it and it smells like peppers!!!! :sweatingbullets:

You absolutely have to smell it to be a true survivalist. First you pic up smush it a bit to determine how old it is. Next with your hands cupped you take a good whiff..Soon you'll be able to tell the different smells and be able to identify what it came from. Now if it really warm and really soft it is too late your lunch!
