I think those of us that are older received lessons of frugality from our parents who lived through the depression and WWII.

No offense to anyone but with age, hopefully, comes a bit of maturity. So you are a bit more apt to think in real terms. Not many 50 year olds come on here with the desire to spend a year in the wild with only a knife. Yes, I know so old codgers that don't have any and some youngster that have maturity well beyond their years. But on average....

Those of us that are older KNOW it can happen to us. When you're younger you tend to think it happens to someone else.

When you're older you tend to be a bit more prepared 'cause you've been unprepared a time or two, lived through it and know how uncomfortable it was.

I like to believe that with age comes wisdom. Wisdom comes from experience. With experience we are better equipped to plan. I now remember why I shouldn't keep food in my tent (damn marmots!). Now I know first-hand why that needle and thread is in my survival kit.

How does your "Current" Age impact your planning....? At 62.5 I only plan to be around 17.5 years anyway, and that is an optimistic assumption. So my planning revolves around not having to haul water from the creek when I am 78 y/o. The new building only needs to last so long, not forever. I only need finite reserve oil/air filters for the generator, etc.

We talk about how living in NYC or LA effects your planning vs. Indiana. So how does your age impact your preparations.

Actually , I have not given much thought to it. I have grand kids etc, so I guess was not looking at an "exipration date". At 54 , and just recently out of "field work" I guess I was too bull headed to consider the mortality issue in that context. But what you say does make alot of sense, would allow you to prioritize your resources.

What I was wondering about was not the way one thinks about survival at different ages.....But for example: I have 5 pair of hiking boots new in the box. But if I was 29 y/o I would want 10 pair. I have 35 pair of Carhart Logger Work pants, enough for the rest of my life, if I was younger I would want more. What I need is two hundred pair of socks. Nails: I plan to buy 200# of 16d nails, and 100# of 8d nails. See my theory is money is near useless to me, so having a savings account or investment is not what I want......I want real things that I will need & use like 5 cases of toilet paper, and a spare 3/4 H.P. water well pump.

Hopeak, my planning definitely takes into account the concerns that you have raised for two reasons:

1. At 52 I realize that simple everyday tasks will get just a bit harder each year; and

2. My preparations are designed to "work" even if I am injured or disabled. My kids, brothers, family, and closest friends will look out for each other. We've planned it and I know that everyone on the team is absolutely reliable.

Example: I recently posted some questions about welding generators. The system I will construct will be self starting with a substantial self-feeding fuel supply and a remote status panel. Translation - I will minimize the necessity to trek outside in the middle of the night during a blizzard to refill the fuel tank - something I didn't mind doing when I was younger.

Example: I tend to "over-engineer" everything I build. I want to do it ONCE and not have to worry about it falling apart - ever. My generator shed will be masonry construction with a dressed up exterior. All of my underground electric lines are UG cable INSIDE UG conduit. If I can get away with a pressure treated 2x4 I'll still use a 4x4. I'll pour 6" of reinforced concrete when just 4" or non-reinforced will do the job.

Example: All home improvements are low/no maintenance. We'll be replacing the exterior face of the house soon. I'm going to use vinyl shingles. Real nice stuff - looks exactly like wooden shingles. No painting ever required. They'll outlast me. That's what I want. I won't feel like doing major renovations if and when I see 80 years old.

Example: I have redundant EVERYTHING. If something breaks and I can't fix it for whatever reason, I have another one - and probably 2 or 3 more. I know I won't be running off to the store to get another one if TSHTF.

Example: Tools. I have the tools to fix almost EVERYTHING I own. No machine shop or anything like that, but I can accomplish 95% of my own repairs with the equipment and supplies on hand. That includes my appliances and vehicles.

Example: Repair Manuals. I've got dozens. Sometimes they even help with the "minor" problems.

Example: I have enough long-term supplies on hand for the kids and mom and brothers' families if TSHTF. If we need to bug-in at my place, the chances are that someone will be able to do whatever needs to be done. A team effort has a much better chance of success than going solo.

I'll spend an entire day designing and building something that will make things easier if TSHTF. I always consider how things will work in a worst-case scenario. I want to AVOID the need to do something I may not be capable of doing.

Self-sufficiecy is the key to my planning. My ultimate goal is to be prepared well enough to comfortably bug-in for an entire year without suffering anything worse than cabin-fever.

Damn! I have to be in court in a half-hour. The above is only the tip of the iceberg of my "planning mentality." I'll post more later.

A perfect example is: When I was a young'buck I bought 100# Propane bottles, which I think full are about 150# and I was man enough to pick them up and put them on the truck. Now I have about 20 of the 5 gal. propane bottles. When I was 22 I split all my wood by hand, now I use a log splitter.

I see what you are saying. I guess we all are compensating for age. I use 60 lb bags of cement rather than the 80's when I was a young buck. I am involving the young ones in the manual tasks and maintenance chores. Granted at various ages they have limited abilities, but by constant exposure they are catching on as my adult children did. They will be the hands and strong backs when or if needed in the future. Hopefully I will have the mental ability to guide them

To try to address the original question appropriately...how does my age affect my survival thinking?

I wake up in the morning, swing legs down to hit the floor (floor's cold, gotta go pee, means the nerves are still working) cough twice, smoker's cough....good-- means the lungs are still working. Cast my eyes heavenward before I toddle off to the potty, say thanks God, I get one more day to survive. Go use the potty and laugh uproariously when I leave thinking of hopeak out there with an outhouse with no door. One more thing to be grateful for--indoor plumbing.

I can still do the things I want or need to do. I can still pack quarters of moose meat out of the bush, track my game, I can still paddle a canoe all day, split firewood with well maybe not the best of 'em, but the rest of 'em....it just all hurts a little more than it used to when I get up the next morning.

I recently turned 39. My age has just made me take less risks, so that will aid in my survival i guess. Also, now having a young son, i think about alot of things other than myself and my surviving, so I think that makes me a little more conservative and responsible and helps in the survival sense

Sure wish I was 62 1/2 again. I still do my own grunt work, split wood with a maul. Planning on breaking in a new chain saw soon as the snakes die down. I've got my workshop complete, making the exterior of the house maintenance free, new windows, roof etc. Can now live on either floor if I can't make the stairs and best of all I don't owe anything to anyone and I can stay here a long long time. No taxes to speak of either. I hope to keep running the hills on an ATV or Jeep if I am going very far, and a great view from a rocker on the front porch. Worked outside and played outside most of my life and I don't plan on rusting.

Hope - I don't think that at 53 I'm planning purchases for their (or my) longevity. I participate in much less risky behavior than I did when younger. I attempt (doesn't always work) to follow the old "work smarter, not harder" saying. Physically I can still do most of what I did, albeit slower. The aches and pains do slow me down from time to time, but they don't stop me. I stay physically active (work and play) which I believe will add to my longevity - if not it's enjoyable while I'm still around.

Just like knowing your immune system is a lot better equipped at age 30 than it was at age 5, I think your life experience innoculates you from some of the things that would have killed you 20 years ago. We all get the same reaction when we hear some 14 or 19 year old say "I know everything (or I know nothing) and I'm going off to live in the woods". We get that viseral feeling in our gut that this is an awful idea because we've learned so much over the course of our lives that we know could never be found in a book. It's that moment you're hiking along the trail with a group and suddenly think, 'it's time to stop and do a headcount'. You don't know why it comes to mind, but it's your experienced unconscious brain that picks up on the environment and recognizes that you only hear two sets of footsteps behind you, that cloud over there looks pretty angry, we're five miles from camp, but only have 90 minutes of daylight, and it's been a while since I've seen Jane and Jim. A novice doesn't even notice-they keep hiking. The dark cloud means nothing to them, the sound of footsteps is enough to reassure them everyone else is there, they're too caught up in staying ahead to slow down or think about how tired the others are.

While there's little doubt that there's things we lose with age, there is so much we gain that it's a pretty good trade off. Do I wish I didn't have so much arthritis in my back so I could swing a pick for more than an hour a day? Sure as heck, but I also know enough now to stop before I'm hurting, not after I've really screwed myself... like I did throughout my 20's... which is probably how I got the arthritis in the first place...

There are many things I have to take into account in Thailand because of my age. I will be 56 next month. I work out in gym six days a week and am physically fit but I know this will not last forever. I lost 40 pounds and quit drinking which believe me was not easy as I love beer. Medical costs are relatively cheap here and is good thing because I have no insurance here. I was overnight in hospital last year with high blood pressure and had 2 ekgs and medications and IVs and whole bill was about 100 dollars. This blood pressure thing was cause of me losing weight and quitting alcohol and I also take medication now. I drive a motorbike which is pretty dangerous here as people drive crazy, but I try to be careful. Basically my survival plan is to take care of my body and not take unnecessary chances. There are some risky things I do which I cannot go into here but there are good reasons for this and actually are the main reasons I am in Thailand but enough about that. Basically I would agree with most of the older guys here. Luckily there are people who treat me as family and would take care of me if I could not do for myself, as they already have done while I was sick. Age is respected here above everything unlike back home.
