A DSLR portion is a must, but I expect I'll be customizing a fanny portion for that - maybe a clip on bag.
I'm used to Duluth Packs, and have tried on some custom bags from REI - VERY comfortable when set up for the specific user, but not a lot of space.
There is nothing I hate more than gear slapping you in the back of the thigh, so I'd rather it was a thick bag without stuff hanging off of it as much as possible. The problem is, I know - the bigger the bag, the less comfortable it is.

You've thought it out. I've got a Kelty Redcloud 5600 that is super comfortable (internal frame), an ALICE pack with quite a few attachments and a MOLLE pack. Additionally I've got several smaller packs. I love em all, but none of these really fit what you say you're looking for, so I can't give you any recommendations. Good luck.

Its probably more than I need, but an Arc'teryx Bora 95 might be what I am after. Have to stop in and try one on. I'm thinking of going large as I expect buddies from the lower 48 will have smaller packs and not enough room for everything they will want up here.

That pack is extremely over sized for "weekend trips", assuming 2 nights 3 days. Hell, it's even oversized for 4 or 5 nights IMHO, unless you are doing snow hikes/shoeing and camping for that many nights (4+) w/all the gear that goes along.

For a weekend pack you could cut your size requirement in half.

Remember you are HIKING and most likely the sleeping bag you have now will be EXTREMELY over sized as will your tent. You will want new stuff to hike/camp with! Compression sacks, and 'backpacking gear' is much different than car camping gear you may have now.

That packs also weighs 7lbs alone, wowzer!

Once you start checking into light-weight backpack gear you can go crazy shaving off every ounce ;) getting titanium everything, and figuring out exactly what you need.

Yeah, I realize you can go nuts with shaving off ounces, but that aint going to happen tomorrow. I have friends that camp ala LL bean, complete with titanium coffee grinder - crazyness if you ask me. I'd rather have a big pack at first and use my regular camping gear for now, replacing that gear as I work into this - thus the big bag. It would be foolish to drop $5k on all the "right/light" gear and find that my old ankle injury is going to make it less than worthwhile.

The finest back packs in the world are custom made for "Barney's". They are made for the Alaska Professional Big Game Guiding Industry, they are built to last 30 years of packing massive loads of Moose meat. They are special purpose for heavy work, hard work, rugged construction, a real mans pack. They are expensive to buy, however they are cheap in the long run.

I think when I re-did my gear to "light weight" I spent around $1k or less total. That's new everything other than light-weight clothes (which themselves you can spend $1k on :(). Titanium cookware/stove, <2lb sleeping bag, <4lb tent(2person), <4lb bag, etc, it can be done I just pieced it together on the Web for super cheap compared to going retail REI local :smash:

Either way get out there and have some fun :)

And keep in mind if your ankle hurts witha 50lb pack a 30lb may not hurt it ;)

Well, I did a reality check today, took every item of camp/survival gear I own out for a complete re-assessment. Then I started braking it down into 2 piles: Car Camping vs BOB/Hiking pack

That really made it evident what my needs are and what should go where. Bob will be more primitive than car (as it should be) and this is by no means a complete list, but you get the idea:
The 5 lb sleeping bag went to the car
The wool blanket went in a compression sack to BOB
3 man 7lb Tent to car
8 x 12 tarp to BOB
Fillet knife went to car
SF Tactical & Hunting knife to BOB
Sharpening stone to car
small serrated sharpening stone to BOB
etc...

As for bags, I have a 50L dry bag that I could strap on or mount to a frame for a BOB and have tons of extra room for cloths and food yet to be added. It weighs about 20 lbs. I also had another 20L dry bag for misc stuff that went into the 50L along with a spare fanny pack. The car camping equipment went into a cheapo backpack (cooking) and fanny packs (first aid & fishing) and the rest is just getting tossed in the back, but at least now it's finally organized :D (Used to sit in a rubber maid in the back).

So here is my new prioritized list of want items:
Lightweight Camp Stove (Required in some areas)
Hiking Footwear:gimp:
Backpack
Lightweight tent
Lightweight sleeping bag
Bearproof Container (Rentable too)
CPPD (Carriable Personal Protective Device)

BTW, whats with the shortage of ammo up here hopeak?
I cant find a box of 44mag ammo anywhere, lol!
Any suggestions on a bear ready firearm?

I'm a long way from the ideal setup for all scenarios, but ya gotta start somewhere right? If your looking for a tough pack, I have used the same pack since 1986. I use it on 15+ trips a year and i'm 6'3" 320 lbs. I use it for overnighter to 50 milers with my scout troop. I got it from Cabela's. It the alaskan with the freighter frame. I have had up to 165 lbs for a solo 2 week trip to recover from a divorce. I covered any where from 15 to 20 miles a day along the pacific crest trail. I did damage it that trip as the gromets became coned instead of flat. Cabela's does have a few light weight packs in their current catalog that are 5500 cu" and around $125 or so. if packed correctly they will be comfortable. I know a few ultralight packers here that there pack weighs in at 17 pounds minus food a water. For a guy our size 25 pound would be realistic. But that does not include any frills. but it does include pack, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad and cooking supplies, clothes, etc....
Don't let your friends take advantage of your size a strength, everyone carries their fair share. It has amazed me many times at the amount of gear a 12-14 year old scout will carry.

My fireline pack and tool weighs in at 52 lbs, add a 40 lbs hose pack and..... not nearly as comfortable as my back pack. A normal pack for week is around 75 lbs.

After an extended absence, I'm back... :)
Picked up a Gregory Whitney 95 (http://content.backcountry.com/images/items/large/GRE/GRE0067/HUMGN.jpg) pack. Ultimate deciding factor was comfort of fit.
After trying on 10-20 of them, I think each pack is unique, even within each name brand and model. When I bought mine, I checked the online price which was $40 less, but ultimately bought the one I had in my hand because I knew that particular one was comfortable. Now the real challenge begins, where to cut off weight, (off me and the pack). The gear I started out trying to accomodate has changed drastically:
1. Dropped the tent for 2 military Ponchos, an inflatable matress and 2 colemen replacement tent poles.
2. Dropped the traditional sleeping bag for a wool blanket.:cold:
3. Dropped the propane stove for a home built alcohol burning stove (Sorry, no pics on this one, I think it might be patent-able).:banana:
Waiting for snow to get out and field test this setup on some cross country skiis I picked up this summer for a song.
Anyone recommend some good AK footwear with some ankle support?

Keep your alcohol bottle next to your body to keep it warm. Cold alcohol doesn't like to burn very well.
