Hi all! I'm a bit of a newbie here, but I'm doing some research for a personal project about hiking / trekking poles and opinions about them. If you could take a quick minute to complete this short survey I'd really appreciate the help:

If I just pickup a stick instead of purchasing high tec. trekking poles, does that make me look something like a 300lbs man wearing a speedo at the beach?

I'd actually be interested to hear some of you guys weigh in on this. I don't yet own any, but I have heard that hiking poles are good to have, because they are strong but light weight, often collapsible, and allow you to carry significantly more weight and maintain stability. I don't have any personal experience with them, though.

So what do you guys think? Are hiking poles worth getting? Or should someone just pick up a couple of sticks, like oly says?

Sgt Draino - If I am backpacking I will use my trekking poles. In addition to stability, I find that using them helps to position my body with a slight forward lean which (for me anyway) helps to eliminate fatigue. If I am not hiking longer distances, I might make a walking staff. I find that the older I get, the less stable my gyros are keeping me, so in large part it's a stabilty thing.

Previously, I had to use a cane to get around because of amputations due to the flesh eating disease. But this past winter I bought a sleeping bag from Cabelas and got a hiking staff for free whenever I bought the bag. All I can say is that I really like the staff so much that I don't even use the cane anymore. I have a lot better stability with the hiking staff.

i usually just grab a stick, every now and again I come across a particularly good one that I keep for a while.

I prefer more of a staff than a hiking pole. I use the upper half differently, like to push through brush and bust apart spider webs instead of my face

Glad you brought this us sgt I have a bad back and refuse to just lay down and dwindle away so I just grab a stick for support, I'll have to look into them now.

I like to hike around the Quaking aspen trees (poplar) for free aspirin when needed

I'm "old school", a student of the late Colin Fletcher,(The Complete Walker I, II, III, & IV.) so my personal choice is to make my own staff if it comes to that. I've seen the new "Trekking Poles" & they all seem pretty flimsy to me. (I weigh about 220 lbs.) The fiber-glass that they're usually made out of looks to be the same that is used in the making of golf clubs, & I've heard some nasty stories of what can happen when those things break! :cool2:

I own two collapsable treking poles. I never use them when ascending, but they sure save wear and tear on my knees descending.

I do a lot of backpacking and can say 100% that my $120 pair of trekking poles are the best investment I've ever made. They do allow you to carry more weight and be more stable, but the main difference is the lack of fatigue you will experience after a long hike. Definitely go with two instead of just one. You are able to use your arms to pull yourself "over" your poles going uphill and therefor save your back a lot of strain; and you are able to "brace" on them going downhill, saving a lot of pain on the knees. You won't have to make all the minor corrections in shiffting your ballance from your pack load that occurs step after step; and that adds up at the end of the day.

As far as durability: You wouldn't believe what those things will take. I have seen several times my 200+ lbs. buddy trip going down a rocky slope and have his pole tip catch in a crack and have his full weight (plus pack weight)pull or hang on the pole as it bent over 45 degrees or more without breaking. I thought for sure it was going to snap in two or the tip snap off, but it didn't. We all use Leiki poles; they are lightweight and durable and I've never seen one wear-out. The little carbide tip is also excellent for sticking to rocks, they bite really well and don't slip giving you the confidence to not have to worry about pole placement all the time; so much so that they quickly become second nature to use.

I was sceptical for a long time until I used a friends once. Now I wouldn't even consider carrying a heavy load without them.

Yes it's steep but if you hike a lot they will pay for themselves in Advil alone. Mine were actually a Christmas present I gave myself with some gift cards I got. It's funny you said that though because I was deciding on either the poles or a good knife, and I went with the poles. The next year I got the knife with some more gift cards. :clap:

Well I found this old twisted stick on the ground and picked it up, that became my "hiking pole" those things are a rip off to me, nature provides us with everything we need. Plus those things look alot like ski poles to me. I found the stick in the woods, it was twisted towards the top and about 4 feet long and 3 inches in diameter, that night at the camp fire I shaped it up and whaaa-la a hicking/trekking pole was born.
Has served me well ever since, and the cost was awesome, free!

thats is what the poles are for; just as you said... a spare pair of legs that work!:smash: and they do help they do make a difference. they do reduce fatigue,they improve posture and balance, heavier packs are less burdensome with treking poles. rough or steep terrain is more manageable. so they get a good review from me.

bear Grylls uses a pole to descend steep mountain sides. and the speed in which he does that is amazing.without the pole.. mud slide over jagged turf. using a pole to drop 15 feet with every vault is a time saver (try it on foot) the pole puts you right where you want to be. modify how you use for what you need.
