I ordered (2) 1/2" Dia. Magnesium rods 12" long off of Ebay last night with plans to makes some homemade firestarters. Anyone ordered any of these. Ebay had every brand made but frankly to me they looked kinda tiny. I have big fingers! Truth I always figure bigger is better!

Thanks Crash! Your link helped me confirm I bought the right material. I found it very confusing being new to these firestarters. I am a smoker so I never considered needing anything other than my trusty Bic. Seems they have an awful lot of names for these little firestarters. some of them were tiny like .250" dia. come'on that might break in my pocket! So if anyone can help me decipher all the different products I am willing to listen. Mostly I would like to know if I bought the right material and if there is better material?

In addition to your magnesium you're probably going to want to include a ferrocium rod. Remember - magnesium = tinder and ferrocium rod = ignition source.

Good link, comparable pricing too! Thanks! for your help as always. While I have your ear a word of caution. I have been studying the hardening process on our knives. One thing I learned is that after quenching we may need to temper meaning reheat to a lower temp and let air cool so the blade isn't brittle. I think your fine if the blade is not abused but i have seen a file shatter like glass so I wanted to make sure you were aware (willing to bet you probably are).

Nah. It won't take you that long. If you're using magnesium shavings for your tinder don't be afraid to use enough. Most folks starting out don't shave enough. You'll get the feel for it as you practice.

I picked up two burners today that should give me some more heat (and faster) than my previous set-up. I'll let you know how it works.

I've used one before, and it's actually not a bad firestarter. It is a little tedious to have to scrape a little pile of it onto your tinder, but it's worth it.

Those Kodiak magnesium rods seem to have a ferrocerium rod glued to them, so it's an all in one deal.

For a variety of sizes of ferrocerium rods, try http://www.firesteel.com. Yummy, sparky goodness! They have 1/2 inch by 5 inches sizes, and grab bags too.

I bought a BUNKER FIRESTEEL (1/2 x 5inches) and love it. I feel guilty if I use anything else to start a fire with.
They have some new ones know that screws in a tube and you can screw the firesteel onto it for a great handle to hold onto.

I have received the magnesium 1/2" rod X 12". I am thinking of cutting it in half and drilling lanyard holes in each half, saving the filings to bag up for my first try at this. How fine do the filings need to be? Anyone have any tips on how I should make these so that they perform the best? I am still waiting on the ferro rod should be in today.

Cowboy - IMO six inches is a bit long. You may want to get a 1/2" dowell and cut it to the length you are planning to see how it feels and fits. You might find that cutting it in four inch lengths works well - and gives you three per rod. As to the size of the shavings - That will sort of be determined by the hardness of your magnesium rod (they are not all created equal). Later today I'll scrape a couple of the different types I have and post a pic to show you what I mean.

I just got my Ferro rod in the mail. How breakable is this stuff, it looks sturdy but I am not sure. Do you think 6" is on the long side for the ferro rod also?

I've never done any machining with them. They can be purchased with holes drilled in them, so don't see why not.

In the pic you can see the small pile of magnesium shavings from the block. I used the hacksaw knife (back) held at a 90 degree angle. I didn't dig out my Kodiak mag rod, but I get a bit bigger shavings when I scrape it. As far as the size of your ferro rod - pictured is a variety - the longest being 3 inches.

I have a bunch of rods and some are better than others.

I`ll have to pull up info on my favorite one, it's mixed with something and doesn't just shower sparks but some of them stay lit/hot when they drop off!

I tested a bunch of tender and lighting sources and I broke a blastmatch, the metal came unglued and it was USELESS. I will never carry a blastmatch! to much weight, and now this... ick!

That is the exact reason that you would carry the magnesium rod along with the ferro rod. Scrape off a small pile of the magnesium into your tinder bundle (wet or dry, it doesn't matter) and use the sparks to catch the magnesium. Works like a champ.

Oops, I left out that I had Magnesium on top of the firestarter I made. Not sure if it was required. I will try to light one without the magnesium this afternoon. I also found that a carbon knife is better than a stainless knife for striking the Ferro rod.

If your damp tinder bundle didn't catch with the magnesium - you may have not scraped enough of it onto your bundle. Oh yeah - stainless steel is just about useless for generating a spark. A small section of hacksaw blade or a P-38 can opener (not the aluminum immitations) work well as strikers.

The only issue I have with magnesium is that if you are cold or losing feeling in your fingers it can be a real chore to scrape enough to make it useful.

I don't disagree with you on that. Mag/ferro fire starters are just one more tool in the tool box. Besides - being that cold really isn't an issue for me in FL.:)

For me the most reliable has always been the firesteel (ferro rod and striker). While natural tinder is abundant (it takes some time to find out what works best for you in your area), I usually carry a variety of man-made tinders with me. I may not need them, but I like to have the option should the need arise.
