View Full Version : Car kits and heat?
I've seen on the threads that quite a few of you have BOB's for your car, as well as inside your house. Makes perfect sense, but I've got a question for you all:
What are some required essentials all kits should have, but you wouldn't keep in the car for heat reasons? In Texas, during the summer time, cars can easily reach 100+ degrees, before noon. For instance, I would never leave bottled water in my car. The heat can leach chemicals from the plastic.
The purpose of the car kit, I suppose, is for when you're traveling, so do you all just add in those heat sensitive items when making long treks you know about?
Any insight is appreciated.
Max - A vehicle kit can serve a number of purposes. It's designed to do specifically what you want it to but most folks use it either as a break down kit so stay safe and healthy until help arrives or a "get home" kit in case some event happens while they are at work, for example.
Remember that some of the members live literally miles from the nearest neighbor so being stuck or broke down during a blizzard could be a life threatening event. Others want to make certain they can make it back to their families no matter what happens.
The first question you want to answer is what do you need yours for?
Since I live in a suburban environment and am seldom for than a dozen miles from home my kit is pretty basic. Things like you'd find in any break down kit, jumper cables, a fire extinguisher, a blanket, and that type of thing. I also have a canteen of water, a GI cup, water purification tablets, a knife and a few other essentials. A break down for me isn't that big of a deal even in winter.
Now to your question. It gets pretty hot here as well. Sometimes in triple digits so those items that melt, like a candle, are not included. That's about it, though. I just keep a close eye on things when the temperatures are extreme to make certain nothing is being adversely affected.

Max - I do keep water in my vehicles, but it gets rotated often, as my wife and I drink a lot of water. In the heat (or freezing) temperatures something to consider is that if you are going to keep food in your vehicle, make sure it is not affected by the extreme temps. Canned food plus freezing = bad. MRE shelf life will be dramatically shortened in high heat (from up to seven years down to one). I believe the key to vehicle storage is to ensure you rotate your supplies as appropriate.

No batteries. I made the mistake once of keeping a 24 pack of batteries in my car. After two weeks they had no charge. That sucked.
I have a big 4 "D" cell Mag lite in the truck. It's been in there for years. The batteries last forever in it. I check them every month because I don't want one to pop and ruin the light but, so far, they've done well and the light has worked every time I needed it. I do keep it in the center console so it's not in direct sunlight.
Interesting that your batteries went bad. Are they AAA or AA batteries?

I keep D, AA, and AAA in the glove compartment of my truck, along with 5 different flashlights (specific lights for work related stuff) in the vehicle as well and have never had an issue with them. My 4-D Mag light (with LED) has been going strong for several years without a battery change, as has a 3-AAA Streamlight (LED).

They were AA. It was a new pack of batteries, I can't remember if they were Duracell or Energizer. I kept them in my center console, out of the light and in the package. Maybe I had a bad batch.
Ever since then , I never kept anything that required batteries in my car.
I used to have a 3 Dcell Maglite until corrosion set in. I took it apart three times and used steel wool every inch of the inside. It kept coming back, so I gave up and threw it away.
I recommend keeping a decent supply of Mainstay Ration Bars in the car as well. They're really not affected by heat or cold all that much.

You can also store the "life boat bars" they keep well in most ant temps. are mylar sealed so they won't gather moisture ( coast guard approved) plus they are non-thirst enhanced so eating one won't make you thirsty. good idea when you have limited water supply. There are also water packs out there that are packaged kinda like the juice pacs both in box and foil bags. They are supposed to take temps from -30 to 150 degree temps. and be good for 5+ years I have not used them But I know people who have and swear by them.

I have some of the water pouches in the car as well. The crummy thing about them is that they hold just a little over 4 oz. of water.

I've had batteries go bad on me before, too, if left in the car for too long. However, my father keeps a Mag light in his truck religiously (I need to copy that), and he's never had any issues, even when it gets triple digits. Wonder if that has to do with brand, or being out instead of within something?
@Rick- Good advice. Most often, my kit would be intended to get me home, so the basics are there, such as jumper cables. However, I do travel frequently on highways, but once I leave where I live, until I reach Austin, they're fairly small towns and mainly country areas. I suppose the secondary purpose for this would be safety/defense. A few years ago, I had the misfortune of ruining my engine in the middle of January on one of these roads. Car died in a bad way, and I had the luck to have broken down not too far off the road from a home that I walked to and asked for help. Several people, men and women, stopped to assist, but I'm always wary about the wrong type of person stopping.
@crashdive123- Never thought about that, but you make a great point about food. If I decide that something like that is needed, I will certainly check the product for their susceptibility to temperature changes.
@Ken and oldsoldier- I'll definitely look into the Main Stay bars.
I'd like to throw out my own tiny experience about the smallest of things- bandaids. I'm not sure if it had to do with the heat, or the quality (they were generic from a local grocer), but when I went to use a bandaid from my little backseat first aid kit, the thing literally crumbled to pieces. Luckily, I had a papertowel and some tape and the cut wasn't too bad.
Thanks for not making me feel dumb for asking questions, even if they are! You guys have a plethora of knowledge and I'm soaking it up.

Well, maybe it's not so much the question but rather the reaction when they are told what folks think of it.
Weeeellll, I have a feeling that it is sometimes the person, I mean the question, that is stupid.
And because I'm new and people haven't had the chance to figure out if I've got a sense of humor, I'll say that I didn't actually buy the Rambo Survival knife, if only because it wasn't on sale for $5.98 anymore.

Funny, Crash & Max! Crash knows that's the one question that drives me right up the wall!:sneaky2: Anyway you've just gotten a bunch of great advice here. You analyze the geographical area that you'll be traveling in, make a list of everything you might possibly need for that area, & put it in a pack of some kind. We all differ in many ways when it comes to this sort of thing. I live in a small town, but have 4 lane freeways radiating out like spokes from a wheel. We have a State Police H.Q. on the North side of town & the Illinois National Guard on the South. We also have family & friends in the area, & we all carry cell phones with car chargers so if push comes to shove we'd probably see some sort of response in an hour. I don't go out of town very much, & never if there's an extreme weather alert. That's what the "Weather Channel" is for. (using the "mind", remember?) I do have an emergency supply kit, 5 gallons of gas, 2 quarts of oil, a gallon of anti-freeze, several quarts of Transmission Fluid, 1 Qt. of Power Steering Fluid, A working spare tire & heavy-duty jack along with jumper cables. Last but not least I have an emergency tire repair kit and one of those small air compressors that runs off of a cigarette lighter socket. I don't smoke and the big old LTD I drive has 3 of things! In case anybody thinks I'm over-reacting about what might befall me just let me say that I'm also in a position to help others as well. Too true, though. And the way I see it, everyone will criticize you as over-prepared, until it's absolutely needed, and then you're somehow "lucky," as if you had no forethought. It's like that old fable, where the ant stores up for winter while the grasshopper says he'll worry later. It's always later right up until it's now.

You may also consider alternate commo to a cell phone as well ham radio/C,B./ or something you can get either of the mentioned in walkie talkie form with internal batteries as well as car cord. usually they'll work if cell is dead or your in a "dead signal" area where your cell won't work

On the bandaid issue: You might consider the kind of medical tape that sticks to itself. The 3M brand is Coban. There is no adhesive to get yucky in the heat. Apply a non-stick gauze pad and wrap. Of course, duct tape is always the old standby.

Absolutely agree. I have a commercial radio set-up. 480 mhz range with a portable (suitcase) repeater and mobiles/portables all linked to a SERIOUS commercial system (300' tower) owned by a very close friend. Range is generally about 75 miles on repeat / 5 - 10 miles on direct. Main repeater is hooked up to a 50 kw diesel generator, which also serves a number of cell phone carriers using the same tower. The system is redundant and will survive almost anything except EMP and major solar activity. If one frequency (repeater) goes down, we can simply switch channels and use another repeater or site as the hub.

Yep they are boxes I thought they were pouches. I have to agree the boxes would likely crush or leak easier.
