i don't know maybe i'm having an off week, i've chewed on this over and over and tell myself not to post this, but i just can't let it go, if i offend some with this, then get over it.
maybe i've been reading hopeaks posts to much or maybe i am turning out to think like him but
WTF is with all the posts about going into the bush for a year, why a year what is the magical number with a year, be realistic try two weeks or 30 days first, i mean you have folks here that spend what a week at the most with 40 lb rucksacks on and they all of a sudden want to do it for a year, seems like maybe you should first be able to handle the cold or humidity or rain or the discomforts that acompany an extended stay in the bush, i just shake my head because maybe 1percent here have spent any amount of real time in the bush and understand it, but when i read about forlks wanting to spend a year i ask why cuz then i read that folks can't spend the night out cuz its too hot or cold or wet or humid do you think that a bug out or a year in the bush with be all fluffy clouds, get over yourself people get realistic and spend as pops say "boots in the feild time"
maybe after two years i snapped but it is what it is
peace out, time for me to back to the bush

See? Now you feel all better. I'm kinda like you, though.

It's sort of like, "I could be a plumber. - Have you ever done plumbing? - No, but how tough can it be? - It ain't tough but there are a lot of things you have to know.

I could do a year in the wild with just a knife - Have you ever done a year in the wild with just a knife? No, but........

I understand what you're saying, and I think you know that I agree with you on it - but really - we haven't had a lot of people coming here saying they were going to do that lately. Maybe they will with summer around the corner, but there really have not been a lot of requests for the how to primer on surviving for a year in the bush lately.

A valid rant, Wareagle.

My longest stretch living out of a backpack was about 3 weeks. In the summer. About 1 week in the winter. The older you get, the more comfortable your own little crib gets. Do I have the skills to make it for a year? I believe I do. Do I have the desire or inclination to try it? Nope. That's why I think of it as "survival" (as recently defined so well by Mac/Pict) http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7385 and not something I want as a lifestyle. Doing something for a year IS a lifestyle.

Well said WE, my adventures in the "wilds" for any extended time were not voluntary. And I can assure you that I have no intentions of doing it voluntarily for any extended period again. Can I do a full year? Mmmm maybe, but to be honest probably not. To Paraphrase Ken a bit. I like my "crib" and being able to go to the store whenever I can get a kitchen pass from the Mrs. It takes a different critter like you and Hope (and several others here) to do it, hats off to you guys and gals, you keep it real for those that seem to think it is a lark to "just go wild" for a year. Thank but no thanks for me.

I just go for the fun of it and to leave all the BS home, if an emergency situation occurs I'll be alright but hopefully not more than a couple of months let alone a year

I just got back last month from a 3 week camping trip up @ Cottonwood,Colorado.
We where 25 Miles from Buena Vista,Co. and 8 Miles from main road.
Me and friend went up there to just to go camping for few weeks(trip got cut short due to his Mom falling and breaking her Wrist and Ankle! 79 years old)
We took a few MRE's with us and few other food items,Tents,Sleeping Bags, and Cooking ware. Was fun.
25-32 in mornings
60-70 in afternoon.
Will I due it again for the hell of it?
HELL YEAH!
For a year?Well that depends.
I guess it would really have to depend on my situation at the time when was asked to go?

Not me. Could I make a summer? Maybe. Let the snow start falling and the food sources dwindle to nothing and I'm a goner. If I lasted that long.

I play pretty strong chess & every so often someone comes up to me & wants me to bring them up to my level in a matter of minutes. I explain that it took me many years & games to learn what I know now & that there's no way I can do that. They get angry & stomp off! BTW, I like the woods, but I'm also a 21st Century boy! Give me the best of both worlds!:sneaky2:

Great post WE, and like Ken I don't want to spend a year in the bush if I don't have to. I would like to be as self sufficient as possible, and live farther from "town" than I do. Boots in the field time is what it's all about. If you don't have the experience, don't try to gain it all at once. Moderation is the key.

Wareagle, I know what you are talking about, and I agree with you. My wife and I just came back from a 10 day campout here in the mountains of West Virginia and although we had a good time, believe me we had all that we wanted. I was ready for a little home life and she was too. We are getting ready to go back for another week at the Spruce Knob area over the 4th of July. It is primitive camping with only a outhouse for accomodations.
Most folks who talk this living for a year or so in the bush usually haven't spent any time at all in the outdoors to amount to anything, or they have stayed in some campground with electric, running water and a bath house on site. They have never really roughed it.
So I understand your frustration with all of this and I think that you got your point across.

WE - I wish I were as tough as you or Hopeak. I wish as I was as tough as my dad or grandfather. But I don't see myself in that role. Not that I'm a weeny. I'm just realistic. I haven't had to live that kind of life so I haven't been "tested". I no longer have the body for it either. To many problems along the way. The two things in my favor are my mental attitude and my knowledge. My brain is tough as nails. But a year? I seriously doubt it. And the season would dictate just how short a life it would be.

I have stayed out several times for two weeks at a time, (mostly because of work.) Doing a year? I don't know. I would give myself a 70% chance of making it a year.

There's too many factors that will be constantly against you. wildlife being the first 20% failure. Between harvesting enough food to accidentally coming across the wrong snake or bear. The last 10% being terrain and dumb luck. Most months it only takes one night of exposure to rain and cold to lay the foundation of your death. Or stepping the wrong way to fracture a bone from falling. While most of us can survive breaking an ankle, we still rely on making it back to civilization to finish the medical process.

Could I make it a year... I like to think I can...

Hopeak is a was'it and OK with that. There was a time that Hopeak was bad to the bone, but those days are over. My current lifestyle has what others would call hardships, but I now live indoors. I still haul the water, sleep in a sleeping bag, and bath in a 1 qt. sauce pan, the outhouse is a total none issue for a healthy male. My longest non-stop living in a tent in the Alaska Peninsula Wildlife Refuge was 77 days, and that was about nine years ago. So, I am a was'it.

I can afford to live softer lifestyle, but I choose to live what Henry David Thoreau said, "I went to the woods to live deliberately". I no longer see it as romantic, or every adventuress. There is a intimacy with the essence of existence that is nurturing, when one lives simply, splitting firewood & hauling water.

I have a neighbor about 1/2 mile away she is getting so she she has trouble with this lifestyle, she is about 91, but she still get's out and hikes her miles, even if she does stay on the road. She is one of the last of the Alaska Pioneers.

35 days was my longest. But it was not in "survival mode". We had packs and resupply. It was a NOLS mountaineering course.

My thought its that in 90% of "survival" situations you would be out for a week at the most. Honestly (FOR ME) the most likely situation is that I was on a mountain bike or a trail and got lost. If I have done my job then my wife would know roughly where I was. co-workers, friends, family etc... I would be missed by someone (WOULDN'T I?). So it would come down to this... Can I get a fire going, can I make shelter, can I collect water, can I ration my food, or gather more. I wouldn't be building a fortress or anything.

If you are forced from your home for a year, something has gone very VERY wrong... and most likley 75% of the people out there are not going to make it.

(Im thinking disaster, martial law, etc etc...)

Wait... I guess my main question is, WOULD my wife start the search?? Hmm... I need to check my life insurance numbers again... LOL

For me, this is all more a desire to return to self reliance. Id love to say Its a lifestyle. And it would be if I lived in the boonies.. But come on, although my home is remote, there is a Starbucks and a Publix 15 minutes car drive away. LOL.

I wanna do 364 days in the bush..... well it ain't a year at least. :) But seriously I have no desire to do that. My wife and I just got back from a 4 day, 3 night camping trip up near Hatchers Pass and that was long enough for me. Tent camping with my wife and dog is not all that comfortable or pleasant to say the least. So all those "rambo" guys can have it I have nothing to proove.

Trufleshufle13 - Typically I invite folks to go to the Introduction Section and tell us about themselves, but you probably knew that since you've been reading through the threads. You are obviously not thrilled with some of the post here and have gone to lengths to let us know of your disapproval on your first post. That's cool - I don't care for some of the posts here either. You, like I have the choice of reading them or not. Search around, find the information you are seeking. Ask a specific question if you have one, but really - if you are going to insult the members of the forum with comments or questions like
All im trying to say is, can someone direct me to a thread on this forum that isn't filled with so much human emotion but a little more knowledge keeping in theme with this forum. Half of the oh so important "stickies" are threads about bashing the new guys. I'm not sure that any direction you recieve would be worthwhile to you.

yes, if i dont like what im seeing, turn it off. i know that, but it just gets to you when you think ."yes! i finally found the exact type of forum i was looking for" and it turns out to be good info buried underneath piles of insults and ego contests.

Idk, maybe i should just keep my mouth(fingers) shut and just keep shuffling through the threads finding all the good info.

for coming off strong, not for coming of insulting. people only insult when they are backed into a corner and have nothing left to grab onto.

Well, let’s take a look at what you did post. You started with a bit of an introduction (thanks for that). You went on to say you’re going camping and have planned so as to make it a good trip. Then you go on to tell us all about the forum that you just joined. How on the surface it looks good, but then go on to say it’s a who knows more contest that bashes the new members. Then your sarcasm kicks in with not posting about “outdoorsy” stuff. Your opinions of SAR are yours and may not be shared by others, but that’s cool. Then the cute analogy with the twelve year old skateboarder and the sarcastic “can someone direct me to a thread on this forum that isn't filled with so much human emotion but a little more knowledge keeping in theme with this forum”. You say that you offered an apology for maybe coming off a little strong, but then go on to say that lengthy rants seem to be all the rage on the forum. Well you may not consider that all condescending and insulting for your first post, but opinions may vary.

You don't owe me anything, and yes, you did come off as a jerk. There are over 126,000 posts on this forum. As you say, some of the responses have been harsh. Were they deservedly so? Often yes, but sometimes probably not. Sometimes folks come here with the romantic idea of living out a fantasy in the wilderness with no practical experience what so ever. When they ask for advice and get answers like try scouting (for the younger ones) or practice some skills in their back yard, or try shorter trips before your longer journey - they often get bent out of shape. That is often when the less than kind words begin. Does it always happen that way? Of course not. We do however get a lot of folks coming here as I just stated that take the advice they're given - or at least the parts that work for them. We've had many, many more come here to seek information to use, get it and use it than have been chased away. Also many of the negativity that happens is when somebody comes trolling with the intent to cause trouble. Seriously, if you look around, I mean really look around you will find a lot of good, useful information. If you have as serious question, rather than a baiting one, there are many folks that may be able to help you.

You are not the only one who sees it I assure you. However, I have chosen to forget it after pointing out some of the same things you have. What you must realize is this place is no different than any other forum. People act differently in front of a computer than they would in person, and others just feel the need to seem superior to others. But then again I'm sure I have faults others don't like too. Just ignore the BS that is so abundant and filter through, there is a lot of good info here.
And welcome to the forum. :)

Truffleshuffle, when you get as old as I am you learn that your emotions belong to you. You can either give up responsibility for them and become angry or you can take responsibility for them and realize that no one can make you angry, you can only allow yourself to become angry. It really is that simple. That's why I rarely get upset. That said, you have let your ire show through in your posts. Really no reason for that any more than some of the posts you've talked about. If you choose to critique the forum then do so and let it go. You've stated your OPINION much like others have (including myself) along the way. Nothing wrong with that. There is just no reason to continue trying to justify your opinion. It is, after all, an opinion.

Crash was spot on when he said some folks ask questions and then don't like the answers. Yes, newbies are sometimes hammered on. But go back and read those posts. I think you'll find they generally (generally) ask some question that belies a dangerous risk, attitude or desire then take offense when folks try to provide a better, safer path. That's when things break down. The effort is to keep folks safe. None of us want to see someone walk away and never return.

The other problem we often encounter are those folks that want the fast way to get there. It just doesn't exist and they don't have the patience to hear that. It takes a lot of practice to perfect wilderness skills. That's why we suggest backyard work and week-end campouts.

Now to you. Are you seeking wisdom, answers to some unasked question or did you just want to offer your critique? Whatever the reason, I'm glad you stopped by.

Re: Biting the hand...

: : What is: Biting the hand that feeds you?

: : It can be a show of ingratitude or meanness towards a kind act such as hiring someone who is down and out on their luck and that person turns around and burgles your home. It could also be what most teenagers do when they get mad and make themselves miserable by not cooperating with their parents.

BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU -- "Be ungrateful; turn against a benefactor. Dogs do it literally sometimes; people do it figuratively. The expression was in use early in the 18th century, as in Joseph Addison's 'The Spectator' (1711): 'He is so wonderfully unlucky6, insomuch that he will bite the Hand that feeds him.'" From "The Dictionary of Cliches" by James Rogers (Ballantine Books, New York, 1985). A second reference states: "This expression, meaning utter ingratitude, first appeared in the writings of Edmund Burke, (1729-1797) one of the greatest British parliamentarians and certainly one of the finest orators of all time. In an essay published after his death, he wrote: 'And having looked to government for bread, on the very first scarcity they will burn and bite the hand that fed them.'" From "Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins" by William and Mary Morris (HarperCollins, New York, 1977, 1988).

Truffleshuffle, your entitled to your opinion on this forum, its neither right or wrong- its just your take on it. Feel free to call things like you see them.

But, your comment on search and rescue units, is wrong for many parts of the USA- specifically in the Rocky Mountains. Most SAR units in the rural/ mountainous west are VOLUNTEERS. They are not paid for coming out and rescueing or finding lost/ hurt people. So, when unprepared people do stupid stuff, a volunteer who works 40 hours a week at his real job, has to leave their family and go search for the lost person- out of the kindness of their own heart. So, around here when someone who is unprepared goes into the wilderness and gets themselves hurt or lost it is a major inconvience for alot of people. People who might otherwise be enjoying some wild places or family time of their own if it wasn't for the foolish unprepared types.

Errrrm, I think TS13 is teaching WareEagle the answer he's looking for and we're missing the point. Why are there so many teens to mid-20 year olds coming to the forum wanting to know how to live in the woods for a year? Because we, as a society, are failing them in one critical way that our ancestors got right without even knowing it: We're not mentoring them, giving them a rite of passage, and welcoming them into the world of men. The only rites of passage young folks get today is the four L's: Licensed, Loaded, Locked up and Laid. The great rites of passage for young adults are getting to drive the car, being able to drink (legally or not), proving they're tough by doing something stupid to impress their peers, and getting their first piece of @$$. Hell, I did that at my Junior Prom.:innocent: Compare that with native culture of Australia and the teaching of traditions, the way of the world, the songs of the outback, and the Walkabout. Many Native American tribes had the Vision Quest.

This isn't a blame game, it's an idea and a possible explanation. Young people want to feel taught, tested and respected to transform their mentors into peers. Instead they get high schools and universities where they're lost in a sea of peers and those that can't prove themselves academically to stand out and receive the laurels and accolades seek some other form of recognition. The lucky one's get an apprenticeship as a Sand Hog, a pipe fitter, a welder, or some other trade that gives them guidance and the opportunity to learn, be tested, and gain the respect of their mentors now peers.

When social skills lack, when communication faulters, when there's no bridge over the generation gap; that's when the solitude of wilderness calls loudest. It's a calling from a primal place within. I had it when I was 19 and got damn lucky I didn't become an earlier version of Chris McLandess. Instead I wandered into a Forest Service office and got offered a volunteer position on a wilderness trail crew. I still can't believe my luck. That said, the same result could have come from walking onto any jobsite where I was given an opportunity to be challenged, prodded, encouraged, and ultimately rewarded for my contributions to the team.

Trufle, welcome. I mean it. I think the internet is a lousy place to try to find what you're looking for, but it's a start. If you're interested in a dialog, drop me a PM. I can certainly understand where you're coming from and where your frustration is coming from, too. Been there, done that, bought the friggin' t-shirt. This is a pretty damn tight knit, semi-disfunctional community with an amazing wealth of collective experience, but they're cautious. They're cautious for a reason; the wilderness isn't very forgiving and wilderness survival isn't a set of skills you can read a single book on and have mastery over. Probably every single one of us has been way closer to death than we'd care to think about and while it can be life-changing, it can just as easily be life-ending. It would be irresponsible to say "it's easy, it's all instinct, and you'll be fine; just go for it". I don't want the consequences on my conscience and I'm sure nobody else does either.
