View Full Version : Your thoughts on a Brits BOB?

Following on from Welderguys thread, I've been giving some thought to a BOB.
My situation is this, I live in a teeny tiny village, no shops for 6miles, no very close neighbours etc. The only real concerns I have are housefire, and burglary/ home invasion. This latter being of concern because the village has a large population of wealthy folk,(I'm the only person in the village who rents). Only 6 weeks ago my nearest neighbour was attacked and robbed in his home.
I have a pretty good siege mentality and usually have at least a months worth of food/candles/cooking fuel in.
BUT what if I was in a GET OUT NOW situation?
So far, I've put on the list
Wind up torch/radio
Small first aid kit, with a small burns kit included.
Change of clothes
My old mobile phone and wind up mobile phone charger
Bottled water.
Energy bars.
Dried cat food:blushing:(got to think of that Bob too)

Have I missed anything out that you might consider essential?

I'm also making plans to put some of my stored food in another place, so not all my supplies are in the house.
Any thoughts appreciated.

You look to be on the right road. Have you made provisions for getting your important papers out (passport,birth cert, copies of bank documents etc)? Perhaps at least a photo copy of each? Also perhaps a map of your area with several routes plotted to your alternate destination? Just a couple suggestions.

I think your first step might be wise to develope a plan. Prioritize the possible threats to you. and then plan accordingly. If you have to leave in a hurry due to one of these threats where are you going. Are you staying with friends nearby or is the situation that cauxed you to leave also affecting them? Do you have a back up location? Will you be sheltering down in a motel? Do you have money or a spare credit card in you bag? If you have to spend a night or two in the elements do you have something to make a shelter? There are so many variables that can "force" the direction (not compass direction) that you take. Starting with a plan will help determine what things you will need to get you through the situations you may face.

Once you do that then you can formulate a plan that is targeted to your specific concerns. With that plan in hand it is much easier for you to look at it and say "if I'm going to do x, y or z then I better have these particular items in my bag"

Very good suggestion from Pal - photocopies of important documents and maps. I know you said you rent - do you have renters insurance for your possessions in the home? If so make sure you include a copy of the insurance paper work as well along with a list of phone numbers that you may need.

You may want to check out this web site www.majorsurplus.com they have a neat backpack set up with tent, sleeping bag,cook set, tarp some dehyd's etc. not the best gear out there but decent gear I have a friend who ordered one. In their current catalog it's item # 11-5940 $ 149.95 is the cost. Plus i know crash,Ken,rick can help a lot more than I can. Also www.beprepared.com has a lot of good gear as well.

Wow! Hadn't thought of the paperwork! I'd be really stuffed without copies of that. I'll also get onto the plan. Money sounds like a good idea too. Sounds like I've got a lot of thinking to do yet before I'm prepared. Thankyou.

Thanks O.S trouble is I'm in England and postage from companies in U.S is prohibitive, I'd love to order a few things but simply can't afford the postage. However there are similar companies over here that I'm going to look at. I'm gutted that so many companies don't ship to UK or if they do postage is HUGE as there's a lot of things I'd like, but can't afford to get them here!

Wychwood - I can certainly relate to being on a budget. If you search around sometimes it gets overwhelming. Here's a thread where we talked about ways to save a few dollars (or pounds). Wychwood - If you are in trades work (electrical, carpentry, plumbing, etc.) You need to include any licenses (or copies) in your BOB. In a worse case scenario, if you had to make a new home somewhere else you want to make certain your trade is protected by retaining the necessary documents to start work again.

As for money, I don't know your financial situation but you might consider keeping 60 pounds or so in small denominations. Remember that if electricity is out your local ATM may not work and any businesses that are open may not be able to process credit cards. Any business that's open might not be able to make change of a large denomination bill so it's always a good idea to have cash in small denominations available.

Finally, you will need to have a communication plan in place. Do you have a family? What happens if you are NOT together when an event occurs. How to you get back together? How about relatives in other locations? Friends that you NEED to stay in touch with for one reason or another? How will you contact them if local phone service is interrupted? How will they contact YOU should they need to bug out?

One of the lessons we learned with Katrina in the New Orleans area was even though local phone service was interrupted, long distance still worked in many areas. The ideal communication plan would include someone (or a group) of folks at some geographical distance. Not only are you more likely to be able to contact them but it becomes UN-likely that both of you would be impacted by the same event. It doesn't have to be elaborate but a conversation with them explaining your concerns and your plan would be helpful.

The site Crash posted has a communication plan that you can look at or you can google for examples. Here's one that you can view although, personally, I think it should be a little more substantial that this example. However, ANY plan you have in place is much better than no plan. Just scroll down on their site until you see communication plan.

Once you have your stuff together and you think you are very close to being prepared, exercise your plan and see what is missing, what worked well that you can capitalize on and what needs to be improved. You can't do it overnight but you've started and that puts you kilometers ahead in the game!!

Well that's something else I hadn't thought of Rick, my degree certs and elctroplating certs are very important.
I knew My girlie brain would forget the important stuff. My son has also had a few ideas for when he's not here(he regularly leaves home, then comes back. I can't get rid of him!)

A Topographical map of your specific area, a compass, & a book on how to use them is very important. Remember, the most important part of any survival kit/BOB is what doesn't go into it...your brain! Study & practice are there right along side of it! Read books, read blogs & threads here, like this one...

You might try this, list all the items you wish to put in your bag, then check off what you already have. Number all the items left, now look at the list and rearrange by priorty, for example, I don't know what books you have on this subject but one or two wouldn't be bad, make sure they're "germane" to your area. (Even an old copy of the English version of the "Boy Scout Handbook" would be a good start.) Now buy one item per week, bi-weekly,(Fort-night?) monthly, what ever works best for you. Don't forget the all-important container for your equipment. Hope this helps.:cool2:

The list is coming along and some of the things I've considered as important are now in a holdall, so I'm getting there. If I never need to use it I'll be a happy bunny, but as the Girl Guides/Scouts motto goes... Be prepared!

Exactly! That is the goal. No one ever wants to use it but if you ever need it, then your life will be a bit easier by having it. Your preparations might even save your life.

Also we all need to watch out for the language barrier here as we Americans quit speaking "English" a long time ago. For the uniformed, when a Brit says "torch", that translates to "flashlight". Whatever you do, be careful with the term "fanny-pack" as that means something a whole lot different to our English cousins. By the way, W.W., here in the colonies the term "fanny" means "butt" or "arse"; not the portion of anatomy that it means in England.:cool2:
