With unemployment hitting 10 percent, the United States may be headed into a summer of civil discord not seen since the late 1960s, Jerome Corsi's Red Alert reports.
Unemployment in March and April remained 20 percent higher in states won by Democratic candidate Barack Obama in last fall's presidential election than in states won by Republican presidential candidate John McCain, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
An interactive map maintained at Slate.com shows that the highest levels of unemployment are in Democratic state urban areas, including Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, New York City, Newark and Washington, D.C. all cities that experienced major race riots at the end of the 1960s.
A closer look at BLS statistics shows that unemployment in April 2009 among the white labor force was 8 percent, while unemployment among the black labor force was 15 percent.
"These data maintain a pattern that has been documented since the 1960s, in which African-American unemployment runs at approximately double the rate for white Americans," Corsi wrote. "That 15 percent of African-Americans are currently unemployed should be alarming for all Americans in that unemployment rates this high are typically associated with prolonged economic depressions, not cyclical, typically short recessions."
In evaluating whether this exceptionally high level of African-American unemployment increases the risks for urban riots in the coming summer, Corsi said one more factor must be taken into consideration.
In 1968, the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, otherwise known as the Kerner Commission in respect to its chair Gov. Otto Kerner Jr. of Illinois, argued that rising expectations that had gone unfulfilled were a major cause of the 1960s-era urban race riots.
The theory was that President Lyndon Johnson had raised economic expectations in the mid-1960s by passing a series of civil rights bills as cornerstone legislation in his War on Poverty.
When the economic and political expectations went unfulfilled as Lyndon Johnson's presidency became involved in the Vietnam War, racism continued to produce a double-standard of living for white Americans and African-Americans that built black rage to a tinder point in which civil violence became increasingly more likely.
"Whether the same phenomenon will be observed with a black president remains to be seen," Corsi wrote. "The concern is that candidate Barack Obama's presidential campaign themes of "hope and change" permitted African-Americans to expect important differences in their economic wellbeing and political power would be experienced with President Obama in the White House."
In 1968, the U.S. economy was operating then at what was considered a full-employment level, with white unemployment averaging around 4 percent and black unemployment averaging around 8 percent.
If unemployment numbers continue to escalate throughout 2009, conceivably African-American unemployment rates could hit 20 percent before the end of the year, Corsi noted.
Red Alert's author, whose books "The Obama Nation" and "Unfit for Command" have topped the New York Times best-sellers list, also noted that the difference between the 1965 riots and today's circumstances is that the Kennedy-Johnson administrations enjoyed an economic recovery from the Eisenhower years that was generated by a Kennedy supported tax cut.
"Today, the Obama administration is already constrained by trillion dollar deficits," he wrote. "Moreover, President Obama is already contemplating the likelihood of tax increases, certain to further depress economic activity, with Obama remaining determined to expand in the current Congress social welfare benefits with a government-paid universal health insurance plan."

Like I would expect a lawyer to have a broad definition of "Widespread".
Civil Unrest is not that big of a deal, I lived in the wrong part of Rochester, N.Y. in the 60's and even though that part of town was destroyed, I was never in danger......the racial/civil rights/anti-war rioting can be a semi-safe way to release pressure, surely better than some alternatives. Wide spread labor strikes, especially in the food transportation/trucking industry could be painful.
I have been surprised at the lack of outrage at Wall street executives and Bankers. I expected a more violent response.
Like I would expect a lawyer to have a broad definition of "Widespread".

I got better thing to worry about than what might happen tomorrow, it is the situations and life's challenges that I wont to survive and prepare for, or at-least do the best I can weather its financial, city, urban, riots, wilderness, natural or industrial emergencies.

While I do not believe there will be civil unrest as described in the original post, if it is something that an individual has a concern about, then it is something that they should prepare for. The key to any effective preparations is to prepare for the most likely threats in your area. Of course, it does help to be realistic about it.
If anyone bothered to look at the BLS labor statistics they would see that unemployed doubled regardless of race or age. Down business cycle and unemployment is up. Imagine that.

I don't see it happening, at least anything "widespread". Sheeple will put up with almost anything as long as they have their American Idol and McDonalds. Look at the last few months - the government tossed trillions of dollars at the financial and auto industry, now most of the same companies that begged for money to stay afloat have gone into bankruptcy! Apparently, it will require some truly massive collapse to even get anyone to pay attention. That being said, if Mickey D's closes, I am buggin out before the riots start.

No. But if there's one thing that is predictable, it's that things are unpredictable.
But I think there's a greater chance of anti-war protests, and that is about as likely as an ice cube's chance under Rush Limbaugh's butt cheeks.
The 60s were the 60s. You had the juxtaposition of several years history of the civil rights movement, you had the Vietnam war, and everybody's economic expectations were rising. But you also had the JF Kennedy, ML King, and RF Kennedy assassinations, which really dashed a lot of expectations. A perfect storm, if you will.
Now, I think many people, despite Obama winning the job, have expectations of decline. Sure, they hope that the economy will turn around and that they can at least make ends meet, but many people feel in their gut that our gluttonous lifestyle cannot continue, even if things improve late this year.
Now, if Obama were to be assassinated, all bets are off. There are some mighty looney and PO'd people out there and some very serious political divisions in the US right now and something of that nature...hate to think of it.
There could be some incidents to be sure. Things were pretty dicey in Oakland recently when a cop grabbed his gun and shot a black kid in the back, saying he thought it was his taser.
This is getting dangerously close to a political discussion. And to use The "A" word in the same sentence as "O's" name could bring some unnecessary attention to all of us here......

Back to the OP, one should be prepared, come what may, predictable or not. And I think the trick is to be prepared for what no one can see coming.

I agree, if the unemployment rate keeps climbing, there will be civil unrest and here's my simple equation to prove it.
unemployed = stress = lack of sleep = unrest :)
civil unrest = civilians are sleepy

I happened to be in DC in the '60s and spent 3 days in a building I blocked with 3/4" ply over the doors, only 2 and no windows were on the first floor. It had squat to do with Vietnam, those "protests" were by idiots who wouldn't get drafted because the ole man kept them in "college" and now they are our leaders. It got hot in the day King was assassinated. I was working on 12th St., NW when I got a call to get out if I could from my boss about 9pm. I walked over to 11th and waited for a bus just watching windows breaking, looting pawn shops & liquor stores. I was "bothered" once by 4 young men and when the "leader" got in my face I stomped his instep, other knee to the groin and heel of hand to his chin. He went to sleep and his friends picked him up and went on merrily looting. Caught a bus and made it to VA, just bricks thru the windows, next day it started again and everyone went crazy mainly the LEOs were told NOT to do anything, just observe. The thing began with a mad crowd on 14th St over King's killing and threw a few bricks. It hit the fan because LEOs were told to stand and watch but don't touch. I have a video (old super 8) of the place burning and looting I took from the corner of 12th & H NW from the roof. It wasn't civil unrest, just people who took everything that wasn't nailed down because they saw they could without reprisal. The "Weathermen" tried to kill the city by stopping traffic on May 1 by blocking streets, opening hoods and pulling coil wires out. I drove from K St. to Constitution Ave on the sidewalk and drove "gently" thru their locked arm road blocks and I did get out and made a couple go "nite-nite" that one was the war, after Fonda & Kerry whipped them into shape. Ain't gonna happen again on that level.

WV Coot makes a good point.
Unlike the military or even union demonstrations, most protests if planned at all are done so by a coalition of groups, often with little agreement other than the general cause, the place, and the time. What actually happens is anyone's guess.
And people do things in groups that they would never do as an individual. Crowd dynamics.
There are always those that will take advantage of the situation: some to loot, some to just get violent.
And there are those that will attach themselves to any cause if it gives them the opportunity to express their rage.
