i am sure this topic has been done already, but i have not seen it done in the way i am about to propose.
so at dinner the other night i was talking with several seasoned hunters, they like spring bear and detest fall bear, same as a road kill deer that ones wife hit the other night(nell i thought of you darlin) but i asked if he kept the meat, he asked if i ever had spring deer, elk, moose, i says no, he tells me it tastes like wood, good to know i think
so my question is-------it is now mid march(or whatever spring day you like) and you must leave immediatley you cannot grab your freezer full of wild game that you plan to live on, you do however have all your dry goods in your bug out vehicle, how do you hunt or eat? i guess you can still eat some small game but you have a family to feed. so what are your suggestions?

Fish. Storing a large cache of meat during the up-coming summer is difficult anyway. Fish on the other hand can be caught daily with typical meat fishing techniques (jug, trot line, yo-yos) while your doing other work. Lastly, in a survival situation "Beggars can't be choosers" if your living off the fat of the land, you cant be picky sometimes. A little tough, musty deer meat, tastes alot better than an air-sandwich.

We could survive on that alone as long as the fish stocks remain stable.

Some other thoughts. Its interesting that "spring bear" is better than "fall bear". In the sping bears are just coming out of hibernation and really are at their leanest of the year. Also, they are eating plants and winter killed carrion in spring- which doesnt seem so flavorful. In Fall, they are at their fattest because they are mega calorie loading before hibernation. In late summer they are usually eating tons of berries, and then moving on to pine bark and other things to make them constapated for the winter and create their "bear plugs". It seems to be fall bear would be more flavorful, because of their diet and their high fat content.
Growing up, my Dad told me we didnt eat much wild meat in the summer, because of parasites that animals have during the warmer months, and because their hides arent as nice for other uses.

i do not know i am just going by what i am told by the hunters here they say bear fat is terrible and alot of bears , because of human habitation get into garbage and ruins the taste

ken maybe you missed the point i was asking about the edibility of the meat as spring for some and even warm weather animals taste like swill

Wareagle, the taste would be irrelevent. I can make venison taste like almost anything you'd like. And even without spices, it can't be any worse than one of my ex-girlfriend's cooking.
You like Mexican food, right? You show up with some venison tenderloin. I'll fix up the best tacos, chimichanga, and chili you've ever had. And I'll supply the Conoras, Dos Equis, or Modelo - your choice.

WE69- By the way I was not talking from personal experience about eating bear. Although I have had it several times- never a big fan, be it fall or spring. I havent had it enough to know the seasonal differnces in taste. I was theorizing- I am sure your friends no better than I, if they are active bear hunters and eaters.

you know i never thought about meat before, i just ate it, but as cattle be it free graze or big corp tastes different, i guess it makes sense that game would be different during the seasons

I have given this one some thought and for those of us in the South hunting is an option with plenty of wild game. Deer have ticks and Squirrels have wolves during this time year. Ticks can cause a lifetime of pain as carriers of Limes Disease. Wolves are just hard to have to look at when dressing a squirrel. Rabbits are a potential for "Blue Bonnet Plague". Lice on flying critters would be worse than it is in fall and winter. Red Bugs or Chiggers will eat you alive in the woods. Having said that all are still palatable options, it will just require some discretion. Fishing is sounding better already. Let us not forget the wonderful world of reptiles I have enjoyed many a rattlesnake. I like a fresh kill you can cut into sausage size links and they will turn themselves on the grill!

Under your scenario if it wiggles, crawls, swims, walks or flies it's fair game.
Squirrel Wolves or Warbles. They are Bot Fly larvae. I think it must be a Southern thing. I've cleaned a LOT of squirrels and I've never seen it in the Midwest.
By the by. If you stick in one place after you vamoose then a fish weir will be a lot more productive.

Squirrels definately have them in spring and summer in SC however I never saw them in MS.

Yeah they are just under the hide, actually they will be breathing through a hole in the hide. When you pull the hide back they fall out and well just not very pleasant when your fixin' supper.
August to January here in Indiana.

Yup, just yuckie! You can stll eat'em just discard the warbles as you call'em.
I guess in a survival situation it would be some additional protein.

Warbles are very common in the arctic, we encounter them mainly on Caribou.
I once harvested a Mt. Goat that had a huge greenish/yellow puss pocket about 10" in Dia. and about 2 1/2" thick on one back quarter. I called F&G biologist and asked about eating the meat. He said, "If it was dead when I found it, don't eat it. However if it was alive when I killed it, all of the meat is edible, including the area around the infection. We ate it and it was good. We did cut out the puss pocket.
I have never had bad tasting Black Bear or Grizzly Bear Meat, harvested spring-summer-or fall. Cubed Grizzly meat fried, and used in Stroganoff thats as good or better than fine beef. The main reason people turn up their nose to game meat, is someone "Miss-handled it in the field dress process, and got oils from the hide on the meat, or musk from the scent glands on the meat. There are exceptions like moose in rut, when they do not eat any food, and only drink cow urine for 30 to 35 days. Still if your hungry it would taste fine.

Good point Hopeak,
Our deer archery and muzzleloader opens in August. It is still really hot and if your willing to brave the snakes and redbugs it is prime time to kill a great buck in full velvet. There is one thing were keenly aware of after a kill. You got him down now you gotta get him dressed and cooled down quick. I don't mean field dress him and ride him around on the truck hood I mean fully dressed and in the freezer. Otherwise the taste will be severly affected. Here is one for you old pros! Yeah I am an avid sportsman but still a youngster to most of you! answer me this why do "yankees" dress a deer hanging from it's neck? We hang'em upside down down here. Serious question.

Skinning was easier that way because once you hit the head out came the carpenters saw and you were done. What I could never figure out is why some people wait a couple of days to skin the deer. I don't know, to each their own. One nice thing is that back home we were always huntinig in cooler weather. Bow season was Oct. 15 and shotgun was Mid november.

Hopefully I didn't offend anyone saying "yankee" it is in fun. Yeah they do that out west you'll see'em hang a deer in the front yard fo several days. I was seriously asking about this opposite way of hanging a deer. Not that I would change the way I do it, I am stuck in my ways? Just wondering if there was an advantage I can see maybe if it was gutshot you might have better luck keep "stuff" off of the meat which is how this got in this post.

In Michigan, we have botflies for squirrels and rabbits, but they don't affect humans. I have seen both a squirrel (live) and rabbit (dead) infected with buboes (bumps containing the larva). I went to Belize one summer and they have botflies for humans.
These are fly maggots which grow under the skin and are quite large and painful.
