During my college years, one of my sociology class reads was a book about Eskimo life that I believe was titled “Top of the World.” I know that I still have the book – somewhere………. Anyway, one of the most memorable passages was about an ingenious method used by Eskimos to kill polar bears on the ice. I did a little web search lately, and came upon a different book with this passage describing the same method:

“In hunting the polar bear, one method is to freeze a coiled spring made of bone into a piece of meat and leave it on the ice. The bear swallows it, the heat of the stomach melts the meat, and the spring flies out and tears the stomach of the bear so that it dies.” (ETHNOGRAPHY, page 154)

I skimmed through several other sections of the book as well. It was written 90 years age and provides a sociological description of various races in the world, including ingenious methods used to survive and make use of the resources in their environments.

The book, ETHNOGRAPHY, A Partial and Preliminary Description of the Races of Man, by Loomis Havemeyer, Ph. D (New Haven, 1919) is next on my reading list. You can find it online, in its entirety, here:

ouch! that sounds cruel and inhumane. I'd rather just take it out quickly with a shot to the head.

I thought you were gonna give us the low down on "how to catch a polar bear":
1. cut a hole in the ice
2. sprinkle sweet peas around the hole
3. when the bear comes up to take a pea, kick him in the icehole

One of the unfortunate realities of survival, is the need sometimes to use methods that we today consider inhumane or unsporting. However if forced to feed my family , I think I would use this method. Remember, the bear would have no compunctions eating you:)

And I'll bet the bear wouldn't take you out quickly with a shot to the head first, either. I've been told that they really conserve their ammo. :innocent:

And to think, the Inuit can’t even legally spear a polar bear anymore! A lot of the old hunting skills have been watered down to harvesting with snowmobiles and rifles.

I think I would use this method.

When I first read of this method a few years back :innocent: the description given was more detailed than the one posted above.

The Eskimo would shave a seal rib bone so that it was very thin, with points on both ends and razor sharp edges along the sides. He would then (very carefully, if I remember) coil the rib bone tightly, and then pack it into warm seal blubber which was kept inside of his clothing and next to his body (to remain pliable) until needed. The blubber would be formed into the shape of a ball around the rib, and then slowly exposed to the cold, where it would freeze quickly. The "ball" shape would allow the Eskimo to roll it a great distance over the ice in the direction of a polar bear. The polar bear would consume the blubber ball, and the rib would spring open when warmed in the bear's stomach, literally slicing up the bear's stomach and internal organs.

Quite frequently, the bear would take over a day to die in spite of it's injuries, and would stagger along the ice while the Eskimo followed. While this happened, the bear would often defecate pieces of his organs onto the ice. The Eskimo would pick up and eat these droppings as he followed the bear until it died.

My dad used to be a taxidermist and when I would go on hunts with him, I would have to stay back at base camp with the ladies. No other children to play with. No toys. So, I made my own toys, generally out of elk parts. Eye balls were the best. One day the wife of one of Halliburton's big wigs came up and asked to see what I was playing with. I showed her. She fainted. One of the guys who worked for my dad took the eyeball from me, threw it up in the air, whipped out his knife and the eyeball landed right on the tip of the blade coming down. It splattered everywhere. That I could stomach....This, not so much.

When in a survival situation use any and all methods to get food. However, a bear could travel a long distance after ingesting the meat/spring. It is possible that the animal could travel so far as to be unrecoverable. Dead falls, snares or even the labor intensive pit trap would be a better means of harvesting large animals.

Ken, the book your talking about maybe, "Top of the World" its a 3 volume collection of ethnographies and explorers journals compiled, and edited by Farley Mowat, I think its from the early 60's. It was required reading in alot of Anthroplogy courses prior to Mowat losing some of his scientific crediblity after publishing "Never Cry Wolf" . "Top of the World", was not his own field work, but a collaboration of others work and adventures trying to create an accurate portrayal of historical and current lifeways of arctic cultures and early contacts with them by explorers.

I'd love to locate a copy of this book. I don't have it.
But, I have a collection of many books (about 50 titles) on the Eskimo/Arctic , including many rare limited additions ethonographies from the early 1900's- some with actual drawings and maps by the author (not copies- but handwritten inserts!) that he referenced in that work.

Its a real hobby of mine to locate and find this stuff. My entire recreational life is sort of based off Inuit culture- kayaking and dogsledding. I have a degree in Anthropology and my main area of interest was Arctic cultures. I actually got accepted into the University of Alaska/ Fairbanks masters program for Arctic studies, but decided I'd had enough formal education for awhile and decided to go guide sheep hunters that Fall instead of going to grad school. Sadly, I never went. Maybe some day...
Anyway, thanks for sharing that link...it is incredibly rare to find folks who share an interest in old etnographic studies about the Eskimo- thanks

I see what your saying, but...
How much time have you spent in the Arctic, and around giant bears?
Snaring a polar bear...I'd like to see that. Also, what are you supposed to create a dead fall with in the barren landscape of the Arctic tundra, next have you ever tried to dig through the arctic ice and into permafrost? The Inuit culture has been a survival based hunting culture eeking out an existence in one of the harshest climates in the world for thousands of years. I think we have alot to learn from them about wilderness survival. I'm not sure your ways are a "better means of harvesting large animals" in that environment. One of my rules when traveling is learn from the locals- their culture has evolved around surviving in that environment and when it comes to meat hunting- locals usually have pretty solid reasons as to why they do something a particular way.

As far as the methodology goes, I'm sure that if the Inuit had something more expedient, they would have used it. From what I've seen of their culture, you can look pretty far and wide to try to find a group that has done a better job of adapting whatever they can use from their environment to survive in that environment.

Zero time in the Arctic 7 weeks around central Saskatchewan. I was thinking more about black bears in the lower 48. The Inuits have learned all the tricks to survive in that environment and I did not mean to detract from their skills or ingenuity.
