We haven't had a test posted for a while so I thought I'd ask a few less common or not so common questions for your thinking. Some you may know. Some you may not. I'll let it run for a day or two to give folks a chance to see/think about it then post the answers. Knowing some of the answers just might save your life!

8. How can you determine the distance and speed of an approaching lightening storm? From the time of the lightning flash count how many seconds it takes until you hear the boom...(Can't remember the actual formula offhand for computing to miles, feet etc...
9. How can you tell direction by looking at the moon?Doesn't the moon follow the same path as the sun across the sky? East to West?
10. How can you determine the number of hours to sunset without a watch? Holding your hand up at arms length and seeing how many finger widths the sun is from the horizon. each fingers width is 20-25 minutes?
I am trying to remember all of these from memory so if I am wrong I would like to know so I can reread and memorize some of them.

Okay, I'm stumped. Tell me how.

2. If you are carrying a pliant plastic bottle for water how can you fill it so freezing wont rupture the bottle? Fill the bottle about 3/4 full and squeeze it before capping to remove the air space.
3. On a sunny, snowy day the sun will melt the snow around any dark object protruding out of the snow such as a leaf or stick. The melt will form a half moon in the snow. How can you determine directions by this half circle? Hmmmm, not sure on that.

9. How can you tell direction by looking at the moon? Depends on when the moon is first seen. If you see it before sunset (I would still use the sun in this case) the moon is in the east. See it after sunset, moon is in the west. Hope I don't have that backwards.
10. How can you determine the number of hours to sunset without a watch? Hold hand at arms length with index finger at bottom edge of sun, each finger = 15 minutes. (3 hands or 12 fingers = 3 hours)

Actually, there are several precautions to take. Never fill to the extreme top - 95% full will do the trick - water doesn't expand more than that when frozen - but here, we are trying to prevent freeing, right? You can insulate with an old woolen sock or more modern reflective sleeve. Activate and secure a hand/foot warmer to the bottle. Carry the bottle INSIDE your clothing and place it in your sleeping bag over night. Add a tiny bit of salt (or drinking alcohol :innocent:) to the water. Carry the bottle upside down to prevent the sloshing water from freezing the tube and around the lid. If using a Camelbak or other bladder, blow air back into the tube to clear it of water, which will freeze quicker than the bladder will. Want me to keep going?

I'll stand by my answer here. However, you can increase your ability to produce heat by staying hydrated and consuming sufficient calories (carbs in the short term) to maintain metabolism.

Yeah, the moon travels east to west. Rises much further south in the winter (Northern Hemisphere, that is) but still east to west. Refer to my answer No. 3, above. Apply the same logic.

Wanna' buy it? It's an LG Voyager and I HATE the thing.
The sun is "South" at high noon. If you have a general idea of the date, you should have a general idea of how many hours of sunight there should be. Divide the remaining 90* into equal segments for the hours remaining,and you've got it. Can't most of us tell how much daylight is left just by the position of the sun, anyway?

While your answer is correct it's not what I'm looking for.

(3 hands or 12 fingers = 3 hours) It got dark a little unexpectedly early on you. The rule of thumb is 15 minutes but it's just a bit off.
An observation on Question 8. Sound (in "average" sea level atmospheric conditions) travels at 1,125 fps. Light travels at 186,300 miles per second.
Therefore, the time it takes to see the lightning is negligible. You know the distance of the storm by multiplying the time in seconds it takes to hear the thunder by 1,125'.

There's a cool link to a map showing current lightning strikes. As you can see if you look at it now, we've got a tad bit of stormy weather right now.
Okay, I'll back away from my answer to Qusestion 7 just a bit. (Yeah, I dug out some old notes.....)
Metabolism stays.
I'll drop Radiative Heat Absorption from my answer - It's not really necessarily heat that you yourself produce, although it could be yours reflected back to you. Nonetheless, even getting it back doesn't count because you can only take credit for producing it once.
Now, my answer, "Activity" was meant to include both voluntary and involuntary activity - i.e. I lumped shivering and exercise into the same category. It seems that the literature disagrees with me, and divides it into two separate "methods."
Therefore, it's (1) Metabolism (2) Involuntary Muscle Activity (shivering) and (3) Voluntary Muscle Activity (exercise and movement) which increases metabolism and generates friction. You got it! 1. Metabolism or "Basal" heat. The basic production of heat by a sedentary person. Partly controlled by the thyroid gland. 2. Thermoregulatory (shivering) increases heat production about three times the basal rate and 3. exercise.

Funny, me too. Except for the number "3." I can divide any number by 3, or multiply it by 1/3, in a fraction of a second. Hmmmmmmm. Wonder why? :innocent:

d. Convection – From movement of air over exposed parts of the body. Think windchill.
e. Transmission – heat that is lost through contact with the cold ground.
7. Name the three ways your body produces heat.
a. Basal Heat – The basic production of heat by a sedentary person. This heat production is partly controlled by the thyroid gland.
b. Thermoregulatory (Shivering) - Shivering is an involuntary reaction to heat loss. It can increase heat production up to three times the basal rate.

8. How can you determine the distance and speed of an approaching lightening storm?
To calculate your distance from the lightening, count how many seconds there are between the flash and the thunder and divide the seconds by 5. The answer will be the distance in miles (divide by 3 to determine kilometers). By counting a few times you will know the direction and speed of the storm.
9. How can you tell direction by looking at the moon?
Draw an imaginary line along the points of the crescent of the moon and extend it down to the horizon. This point on the horizon is the direction South of your position. Obviously, this is not possible with a full moon. You can also use a compass stick on moonlit nights the same way you would it with the sun. The shadow of the moon will move from west to east just like the sun.
10. How can you determine the number of hours to sunset without a watch?
The width of each of your fingers represents 2.5 degrees. The sun moves 15 degrees per hour. So each finger represents 10 minutes. By extending your hand so the width of your fingers measure the distance between the sun and the horizon you can determine how long before the sun reaches the horizon. If six fingers can fit between the sun and the horizon, the sun will set in 60 minutes (10 minutes X 6 fingers).
Man, I missed the test completely. I don't think I would have got number 3 and I think number 1 should have said sources rather than directions. I guess directions was used to throw people off intentionally. The other stuff I was pretty ok with.

One variation on this that I was taught. Have light tinder loosely held with the match. That way when the match flares up, it has a better chance of catching.
I normally do this and have a smallish piece of bark in my hand that I can rotate the flaming match/tinder onto. (Helps lessen scorched fingers).
