Am I the only one here who has truly survived being lost? Why then is it callled wilderness survival? I am really curious. If you plan a trip out to the woods, it is one thing. If you are lost, another. You all talk about what you need to survive. You need your head, your wits. Nature really does provide.
Don't take this wrong, I am just wondering. . ..the attorney nature in me.
My goal is to NOT get lost. NOT have to survive in the wild. Never put myself in a survival situation. But if I do, then I want the knowledge and some tools to help me get back in one piece. I would never intentionally place myself in a survival situation just to test my skills.
I don't agree that nature provides. Those tarps you found were not because nature put them there. I think you were incredibly lucky to have survived your ordeal. I don't want to go through it and find out it just happened to be my unlucky day.
Amy, I think that the very essence of this forum is largely based on there's plenty more that can go wrong besides being lost. I was lost once briefly and found my way out of it and home again when I was nine years old, but I grew up spending all my time out in the bush. In fact, even at that age I remember more than anything that I was surprised that I'd got myself lost and I knew to not panic.
I agree, nature does provide, but there are a lot of people who haven't had the opportunities some of us have had to learn the ways of nature and know how nature will provide for them. It can be a scenario as simple as a turned ankle on a hiking trip, or a swamped canoe. There are places where I go canoeing where I know there will be no human contact. I choose that. So, simple preparation for things that might go wrong will certainly save me a lot of trouble if something does go wrong. And, as for being lost, learning simple navigation by the sun and stars can make a world of difference if a person is trying to get home, or knowing that you left a travel and timeline itinerary with someone so the right thing to do is stay put, again is simple preparation.
I also have found, having been on this forum for some time especially, that there are a lot of myths and a lot of misinformation out there. People think they'll be able to hunt or trap their food when they have no clue how to go about that kind of work in real life. They're believing in some Hollywood claptrap, or too often with young men, just listening to the testosterone rush in their ears. So I, for one, and many others here, attempt to dispel the nonsense and offer some of our real world experience. If I don't have the knowledge (wild plant edibles is a good example of one of my weaknesses, but I've picked up some good info just coming here) I don't pretend that I have. It's a pretty good system all around, except often...wayyyyy too often in my opinion, we'll get a newbie who asks for opinions on some subject and then throw a hissy fit when the opinions don't meet the preconceived notions. I love the outdoors, I try to remain realistic about my own levels of expertise and I'd like to see other people who maybe haven't had those chances come to love time in nature as much as I do.

You are right Rick, that I was incrdeilbly lucky. The tarps were not from nature, although I tihnk I would have survived anyway. My real curiousity is that all the planning won't do anything. You find yourself in the situation, and you have to rely on yourself. No one wants to find themselves in the situation I was in, but then again. . .I still love it. It is really weird.

Wow, Trax, I don't erven know where to go with that. You are so right. I am just going on my experience that you get there and you are there. I love you all, and am so happy I found this place. I just want you all to know what happens if you really find yourself there.
Um, yeah, the food thing, there really isn't that much, and it isn't that easy. swallow flies, eat plants that aren't red. . .. best advice I can give.

Amy - I agree with both Rick and Trax. Being lost just means you are lost. It may or may not turn into a true survival situation. The actions that you take after becoming lost will dictate whether or not it is. The rafting trip that Jason discussed yesterday most certainly could have become a survival situation. While they may not have had all the gear they wished they had, they had their experiences with them to get them through it. Years ago while camping in high altitudes with a roomate we got about two or three feet of snow on our last night. We had a blast. On the way down the mountain we passed a group of rangers. Apparently many that hike at that altitude late in the season are not prepared for such things. Rangers said they were coming to look for the bodies. It is my fervent belief that your situation turned into a survival situation because you were unprepared for what happened. It's great that you kept your wits and came through it to retell your story. Of the many things I enjoy about this forum, passing along information and ideas that might prevent a survival situation is near the top of the list.
And one other thought. None of the folks that did NOT make it are on this forum. Only the ones that survived are on here.

Amen to that. I do agree with being prepared, but I am still curious. But at the moment, I am in a telecofernce that is boring the crap out of me. I hate being a corporate tool. Maybe that is the problem.

THAT is a dobering thought, Rick. I hate to think about that. I read Into the Wild 6 months after I was lost. The move was good too. I hate thinking how lucky I was, when others weren't. That was really the idea behind the thread. Preventing it.

I've not had the experience of being "lost" like you were. A little while a time or two, but I was either always with someone who know where they were when I was younger or made damn sure I knew how to get out as I got older. I've survived more stuff than most people my age, but 99% of it was in an urban environment, so I don't really go into it here. Besides, most of the stories are not PG-13, and not the type of thing I think the respectable citizens and LEO's on here really want me to be re-telling for the masses.
But yeah, as has been said previously, I came here to learn so that I did not end up a casualty, and since I tend to bring my kids with me when I go into the woods, I had to make 200% sure I could get them back out. If it's just me, *shrug* they'll get the life insurance check eventually, ya know?
Amy - I agree with both Rick and Trax.
And as often as we get to hear that, it never gets tiresome.

Totally different when you have kids. I cried. My sad thoughts were that my mom wouldn't know what happened. Now I have kids. Every day I think that I lived so they could be.

It does'nt worry me to get "lost". I eat just as well as at home.lost out there means that i am somewhere that i havent been before.i am enthusiastic about going to see things that i havent seen.i can provide for my self pretty good out there.i use primative technologies to throw down cold and wet and "cant find any food". for me to enjoy an outdoor experience i have to become lost in the wilderness.

those undisturbed areas are where i get my tools and other equipment like the bracket fungus, javolins and the indian"flying knives" off of fallen adult trees. without those romote places much of the "lure of woods" would not exist. and finding survival equipment would involve using new or other methods.(modern backpacker)

I am very partial to my magnesium flint stick! the other methods are difficult,and not all that reliable. thats right i do need more. alone in the wilderness you do need advantages that counter the "not having any help" delema. my flint stick and a bota bag full of cooking oil does a good job at doing some of that.

WELL, If you are man enough, You can leave your clothes at my cabin, and I drive you up the road and you can jump into Sixmile Creek (Class V and sometimes Class VI river). I'll give you $1,000.00 per day for everyday you are over there after 12 days. But, You have to give me $1,000.00 for any days less than 12 that you are NOT over there. You think you can do what a girl did........Man-up.

I think a lot of guys have been "lost" in Mexico at one time or another. You can make up any age you want. It's your story.

Well I am not ashamed to say I would not do it. Look at those photos on Chugach Outdoor Centers site of that white water on Six Mile Creek. That is the Creek I hike along most days. Well...someone has to do it.....:):):)

yea, things can turn bad for some body out there in a remote area. and if your alone,it must be tough. i fell through the ice of a lake in mich. and i was only 1 mile from home but it seemed so much further. i try to dress well but nature can ruin that fast. even with clothes survival is not much better under some conditions.
Well I hate to say it . But I get lost all the time and I do mean all the time . I even eat better when it happens then I do at home. ...Oh but I did not tail you were I get lost at ... When I go to a big city I get lost all most every time that I go..... I did get lost out in the woods once ... I was out driving the back roads . I came upon a little store , post office ,Dinner , gas pump all in one . Went in and had lunch . One of the locales ask , You look lost , are you lost ? I said. No... This is still Earth right ? He said . Yes . I said. Then I not lost. .....I had only been driving around for 2 or 3 Days ... but I was not lost !!!....LOL..LOL

Never been lost, only slightly confused for a few hours. It happens so you prepare for anything. You must remember you have a guy named Murphy with you all the time and out of nowhere he can screw up a two car funeral. That's why you must always be prepared in the woods or in the streets. Both are not forgiving, so be ready.

I suppose my answer to your question would be that I have always believed that, if you find yourself lost, then somewhere along the line, you have done something wrong.
I don't want to marginalize your experience or negate your apparently high level of personal fortitude, but (based on what little I know of your getting-lost story) it really is more valuable as an example of what not to do than anything else.
Just think how much more comfortable, warm, safe, and perhaps even nourished you might have been if, before finding yourself lost in the wilds of Alaska, you had invested some time and effort into learning some basic firebuilding, foraging, shelter constructing skills, if your vehicle had been properly stocked with a few basic "survival" tools, and if you had known how to choose proper clothing for the environment you were entering.
Nature may provide, but it does so much more abundantly for the person who knows what they are looking for and how to use it once they have found it.

mabe they are hopeak. i have had hypothermia twice, i am causious about wet and cold. I can handle as much as any other, but i tend to over dress and try to stay away from cotton clothes when outdoors.

I've always been an avid outdoors person. But that being said I am well aware of the dangers out there. I was also a member of the Maine search and rescue, and have seen the results of being unprepared in the woods when you get lost. Very sobering. You tend to get very tired of recoveries instead of rescues. As a SERE Instructor, I can't tell you how many of our students had little or no experience in the woods. Yes it is called wilderness survival but let me tell you, there are different kinds of wilderness's. And i'm not talking about the woodsy kind.

Ive never been lost in the woods. Turned around ? yes. Years ago I shot a deer with my bow right at dark. The deer ran off and I waited about 20 minutes before trailing it. It got real thick real quick and while I could easly walk from stand to truck with a flashlight I was in the swamp with little blood to start then none and the mosquitos! I did find the doe and without a compass would have been screwwed. The direction I thought I needed to go was the opposite of what my compass said. Dark woods will turn you around like that and forget the sky it was overcast. I drug the deer through some ruff terrain sweating profusely. Thank God for Shannons Bug tamer suits. I finally came to a road but no truck or tire tracks, and left the deer there. Following it it curved around and I saw the reflectors on the truck. Thats a sweet feeling. I was out of water and batteries were going dim in the light. I now have a small GPS and wouldnt hunt without one, or venture into the bush for that matter but map and compass backup. Oh a cell phone too.Looking back a water filter or halzone tabs and a net hammock might have kept me there till morning. I can always make fire but didnt need it.

you were fortunate. the places that i go to here you cant walk more than10 miles without crossing a road.just walk any direction. i have tried to get lost in ocala forest.cant do it. roads run like spider webs.cant get lost but i get tired of walking. i do need some frontier in my back yard.

I was lost just the other day.. Me and my girlfriend took this outing in Dallas.. Well long story short was she called me asked me where I was.. After looking around for a sign I realized I was in Dillards right.. well she was all the way over at the Bath and Body shop.. I swear.. I walked around that mall for 4 hours trying to find her. The place was so big I had no idea which direction to even start. I should have brought some powerbars and gatorade.

I think the fact that I haven't been lost in the wilderness yet means that I survived all of my outings thus far without incident. Like everyone else, my goal is NOT to have to be in a survival situation in the first place, but if I were in one to at least be as prepared as possible for whatever may come. Hopefully, I will have learned enough vicariously and through personal practice in non-survival situations that I don't leave my vehicle, I always keep a minimum of necessary items with me at all times (just in case) and know how to use them, I wear appropriate clothing for the climate and weather so that I don't have to strip down to prevent hypothermia, and I keep my bearings so I don't have hundreds of others putting their lives in jeopardy searching for me.
I'm shocked no one has answered this yet. Okay, I will....3129.

Ive been all over Ocala Forest myself so I know what you mean. Those roads are sandy too so they wear you down walking em. Lots of 4 wheelers tearin it up but I finally found some decent areas to hunt. Only bowhunting there so far. Juniper Creek is an excellent kayak stream with lots of wilderness around there for sure. I would always hit salt or Silver Glen springs to cool down midday before the evening setup. If I draw no quotas for bow Ill be back down in Sep.
Never been lost.
Been turned around, once for two days in Panama. On the second day popped a smoke to get picked up.
Once in the Western Md. mountains, spoke of this here before, did lose my way in the universe. But because I'm no dumb sheot and know how to use a compass, common sense, and sitting down and taking a few breaths and realizing the situation, managed to make the right decissions.

the boils at silver glen are cool. i caught the biggest mullet ive ever caugh just out side of silver glen inlet. lake george is an exelent place to survive.that reminds me of a time that me and two of my friends had built a raft out of reeds on lake george. we were paddeling to silver glen from 9 mile road (navy test range) and in the middle of the lake a police boat stopped us and made us get out of the raft! it was hilarious, i still laugh about it today, lake george is great!
