With a few exceptions, damn few exceptions, when people think survival, they think of things they need to buy, survival thingies. And the survival thingie (Pack or Bag) to put the other thingies in. And yes yet another survival thingie (Bug'out vehicle) to put all the other thingies in. People post with great pride all their new thingies complete with photos of thingies, and detailed list of their thingies. There is ONE thing you never see posted here, Never......

Well, maybe it was and I missed it: What is your work-out program.....? Do you run 5 miles per day....? or do you hike five miles twice per year....? Do you lift weights.....(the TV remote thingie does not count as weight lifting)???? Do you swim twice per year or daily......?

One thing I tell "Big" guys with there new "Personal Defense" handgun, if you lost 65 Pounds you would be a smaller target......:innocent::innocent::innocent:

Physical fitness should not be a "survival" consideration. It should come long before you ever start looking at "survival", as part of your daily routine, as important as eating or sleeping. Otherwise you can't perform the necessary actions to save your butt. I don't do a complete 5 miles every day, but a 5k fun run is about average for the cardio, 4-5 times a week with longer runs when I can find time. It's not all about distance though. You gotta change it up. Throw in some sprints (fartlik), stairs, big hills. Otherwsie your just gonna burn body fat and never get any faster.

I lift some, but I don't go for bulk, I go for strength, medium weight, more reps. As for a 'routine', to keep in interesting and to avoid "growth plateau's" it varies constantly. To continue to make gains you have to "shock your body". Otherwise your muscles get used to the same movements and unless you increase your resistance or do different exercises you stagnate.

But more than than lifting, I do martial arts. It accomplishes two goals, keeps you in "fighting fit" condition, and prepares you to deal with physical security threats. Lately I've been exploring parkour, and trying to shift one or two runs a week over to a parkour-esque exercise, just because it makes it more enjoyable, but it's also something that could come in useful for those of you in an urban environment.

I run 4 miles a day. Two in the morning when I wake up and then two more after the sun has gone down. I have a lake near my house that has a 1 mile track around it. Nice little man made lake near my housing addition.

I use to work-out with weights 3 times a week aswell, but I havn't been to the gym for 2 months nearly. I can run 3 miles which is the Marine PFT run between 19:45 and 20:20 depending on the day/weather and possibly the circumstances of the day before. I'll usually run a timed run like this once every month or so to 'keep track' of my progress. I'm trying to get under 18 minutes flat. I know I should be doing much longer 5-6 mile runs to accomplish a faster 3 mile time..

Protein powder and creatine every day along with vitamins. I do push-ups, pull-ups, and sit-ups every day.

With those I set a number for example. I'm going to do 100 pull-ups. I'll hop on the bar put out my max which is somewhere around 16-18. Jump down do sit-ups for 30 seconds to let my arms rest. I'll jump back on the bar put out whatever my max is on the second set.. which is significantly lower than the first time. Like 12-14 reps. Jump back down 30 seconds sit-ups.. back to the bar... until I hit my goal of 100 pull-ups.

This usually takes over 10 sets but believe me it's one hell of a workout. This I do every other day with push-ups on the "off days"

I'm not in great shape, and am in no way a big guy.. I only weigh 183 and i'm 6'0" tall. I've done martial arts training mainly Krav Maga and Tai Kwan Do. I boxed from the time I was 15 until I was 20 at a local gym in Oklahoma.. Nothing ever more than regional fights every now and then when I was feeling confident.

I'd like to get back into boxing, or well actually MMA would be fun to train in. There's a MMA training center here in OKC i've been looking into this past week. There's one called Redline Jui Jitsu and the one i'm looking into called OKC Octagon. It hasn't officially opened yet though. I think training MMA would be more practical in a real life situation than training strictly traditional martial arts.

It's all in how you train. While the combination of Muay Thai/BJJ is effective on the street, most gyms train you for competition, not combat. You hear that a LOT from the traditional guys now, but a lot of that is them trying to keep students. It's EXTREMELY hard to find, but muay boran was the actual militant branch of the muay thai tree, before it became ring oriented years ago. Regardless, the main benefit from MMA training over traditional training is that you train at all three ranges of H2H combat, but mos tof the traditional camps are now offering "seminars" or cross training to compensate for an inherent lack of grappling, or wherever their style is lacking.

A lot of it boils down to personal preference as to how you would prefer your dojo/gym to be and how you want to accomplish the end goal, but the key is to remember that no style is superior to any other, that a style is just a style, and it's the fighter/warrior that is truly going to make the difference. The "art" comes from the self expression of you, so try not to get hung up on the branches of the tree and focus on the root instead.

my daughter trains MMA Freestyle (Kajukenbo)...I merely have a measley green belt in Kenpo....I wouldn't want to get into it with my daughter.

I live near one of the only schools in Thailand which teaches muay boran. Actually muay boran just means ancient fighting and back when it was taught it was not called muay boran. This is a modern term. It is true though that there were more combat oriented styles before muay thai or thai boxing was developed. I am 55 years old and although I have been in martial arts most of my life and had my own school in US as well as teaching unarmed defense tactics in department I worked for , I have never studied muay thai and feel I am past the age to start now, although I know guys my age that do. I work out 6 days a week on elliptical trainer at gym and lift weights 3 times a week. Gym membership here is only about 12 dollars a month in US money. I also ride a bike and a horse, swim and work farm and trek alot in jungle, so I am pretty active. I am also on the mountain rescue team here. I used to lift heavy weights but I had high blood pressure and now I concentrate more on cardiovascular exercise and losing weight. I lost about 30 pounds this year and also gave up alcohol, which was not easy.

I can't run anymore, but am finally doing something about that. Once my surgery is done and I recover, I should be able to walk more. After that, the running starts back up. There may be some physical therepy involved, but I will be finishing up my last 80 miles of the PCT next summer (At least the last 80 miles in Oregon that I need to finish up).

Seriously. Talk to your surgeon about the running. I think you posted about some ortho problems earlier (?). If that's true then you really need to talk to him/her.

Very true. Back then it was probably just called "fighting" or something similar. It was a way to keep your *** alive on the battlefield if you were disarmed and facing several opponents. Muay Boran is a term that is used to distinguish the combat art from "Muay Thai" the sport. Many years ago when the thai's fighting art changed there needed a way to distinguish the two. This has happened to just about any art you can name. (Not the namechange, but the whitewashing) Most of the "ichigeki, hissatsu" style movements were no longer taught because training those types of movements, while vital in the past for survival, are a liability when fighting in the ring. A split second of losing control and "snap", and you're on your way to court, but in the middle of a melee battle, those movements could mean life or death.

Which was my point, that it's hard to find anyone to teach you the lethal aspect of most arts, even TaeKwonDo. It's just to much of a liability. I just used the Thai's art as an example because we were talking about MMA. But the whitewashed crap you get here in the states in just about any school you go to is NOT the original "style". Not only are the truly lethal aspects of the art removed, as each instructor in the lineage adapts the style to their own way it morphs into something different. Most have dropped the "jutsu" mindset and moved into a more sport, or physical fitness, oriented "style". The few that are teaching true combat arts still tend to have a hard time keeping the doors open because there just aren't enough hard mother****ers willing to show up and work out.

I see it all the time. Bob shows up on Wed. night to work out, goes through class, and like the Bowling on Tuesday and Poker on Thursday, he forgets about it afterwards unless he has bragging rights for something. Next Wednesday he'll show up, huff and puff through his workout, and not think about any of it until next week. If he ever has to *use* what he's learning in class, when he gets his *** handed to him by someone who fights on the street all the time, he'll think "this is bull****! I've been wasting my money for x weeks/months and they haven't taught me anything!" Martial arts requires training, training, training. Once a week for years is going to get you there SLOOOOOWLY, whereas if you make it a part of your lifestyle and train everyday you can quicly become a lethal dangerous mf'er.

I taunt really tough guys, then when they charge...I start running. Sometimes involves dodging through traffic, hopping fences, up and down flights of stairs. It's great.

Parkour was created by David Belle...a young Frenchman.
The philosophy behind it is "always go forward". Few know this, but Parkour was actually inspired by David's grand-father, who was a fire fighter, and would train new recruits in odd fashions...

David developed Parkour on a massive concrete structure built for rock-climbing purposes. The main philosophy consists of surmounting any obstacle in life, by creating momentum and always going forward no matter what this obstacle may be...hence he is always running.

Parkour has always been very interesting to me. The french art of movement. There are some awesome videos on Youtube of people practicing parkour. It's something I'd like to get into to. I just don't know if I could jump off buildings and stuff.

I put thingies in my bov
I put thingies in my backpack
I put thingies in my shoulder bag
Heck I even put thingies in my pockets
then each season I take all the thingies out and repair and/replace and put all the thingies back and that is called the thingie work-out

I have knee and back problems also. But this hernia is what really keeps me from running. My knees are due for a replacement, no matter what I do. My back will hurt, but it hurts when I sit on my butt also.
I don't plan on running a marathon, just get my heart rate up a few times a week. If it starts to hurt much more than normal, I will back-off. I am walking a few miles a week, but it is not enough. I need to get my heart rate up, and this hernia is the limiting factor at the moment. Little steps, and I will get there.
I do have a date with an 80 mile streach of the Oregon PCT next summer, that I intend to keep. It may only be a few miles at a time, but I will do it.

See if you have a gym or rehab facility with a pool. Running in the water is a good cardiac workout without shattering your joints. The water cushions them. Just a thought.

Thanks, that is on the list. There is a 1 credit low impact water aerobics class the second part of the summer. Doc says that I should be recovered enough to do it by then.
When I run, I mainly run on the track or cross-country. Its less jarring than the roadwork. The Doc is also looking at prescribing me some shoes that help with the jarring.
She is not pushing me on this, and I will be recieving regular check-ups for more joint damage (MRI and X-ray).

Good luck! Pole climbing can be heck on the knees. Add any injury and arthritis and just getting out of bed some mornings is an achievement.

Generally I'm in top physical condition and expert after expert will say that fitness dramatically increases your odds of survival, but that doesn't mean you can't be into survivalism if you can't work out. What about the 65 year old with diabetes and early congestive heart failure? Should he ignore prepping altogether and just accept his death when Katrina arrives? Or would it be prudent for him to store as much of his medications as practical so he can get through an event that might disrupt normal supply, like a severe storm?

While I think there's plenty of overweight, out of shape gun nuts who run around calling themselves survivalists when they're more gun collectors with 4XL BDUs and an unusually large cache of ammo that won't survive; there are also others who have health problems that prevent being in olympic fitness that are wise to prep all the more since their mobility may be limited. If you can be fit, great. You just improved your odds, but that doesn't mean you should roll over and die if you're insulin dependent or unable to do an elite level workout routine. We all share the common will to survive, endure, and do whatever it take to not be dependent on "the man" when the ice cream turns to $#!t.

Actually parkour was originally created right here in Southeast Asia, in Vietnam specifically, by French soldiers who figured they might have to learn how to get away quickly, and it turns out they did. There is a Frenchman here who thinks it is good to practice this to help escape from the numerous forest fires in the dry season and floods in the rainy season, which is right now, so he has been showing me a few things, but I am not ready to flip over walls or jump off of roofs yet.

You are guaranteed arthritis as you get older. Back problems are a given, as with the knees. Except for the back I can do what I want and a little more. I can still climb(trimmed trees this week) and work daily. Winter is a killer because I don't get out that much walking. Take it easy but keep moving. I still surprise my Doc who goes riding with me, can't stop or you will freeze up, been there and all those problems come with the job.

I drive a tractor trailer delivering large stacks of bread to stores like wally world and grocery stores like schnucks ( our local chain) so I walk about 2-3 miles a day running up and down a ramp in/out of trailer with heavy stacks of bread or stacks of empty trays. On my off days or short days I work out for an hour or so on my bowflex machine, hike when i can and swim ( have a pool) when weather permits.

In the military, we call the "parcours du combattant"..."parcours" for short, and this may be why you would think the two are one and the same.

We always just called it an obstacle course....

I walk 4-8 miles (sometimes 10, depending upon the dogs mood) 4-6 days a week. I do a mile in < 15 minutes. I'd love to run, I'm not a runner, try as I may.
