there always seems to be those folks who want to quit their jobs and live off the land in alaska, well do a couple of things first
one read wildwomans blog about living off the land
second, go to hope alaska, find the oldman, he will let you stay on his property for a mere 3 thousand dollars, then you can build a cabin all by yourself and grow a garden and all the cool stuff you think would be great and hope will keep his distance and watch, kind of like a lifeguard, so when you need bailed out he will be there(money non refundable) then post what you learned for all the others

Yes,yes, yes I want to go,however, I want to jump over tall piles of bear doo doo,swim in frozen waters,jump from high polar bear rumps,eat rusty spam cans,make primative rope from real rope,have someone look after me in a nice 5 blade hotel when the day is done.

I couldnt stand the cabin fever for the long winter. Vacation yes, sell out and relocate to Alaska? no way.

You don't have to do any of that. Just take a trip up there. Stick your hand down in a glacier fed river and hold it there. Stand on a ridge and look forever across ridge after ridge after ridge after ridge. Walk out in the fog. Watch eagles in the air. Watch a moose munch on willow. Watch a bear pick berries. Watch dall sheep on the side of a mountain so far away they look like moving white dots. So far away your eyes can't focus on them. Watch a whale surface beside you. Watch it's calf surface. Look around and realize you might be the only person in 100 miles.

Then go home and think about if you REALLY want to do that. It may be the only place on earth that makes you realize how meaningless you really are.

rick , you hit it right on the head with that one, i think most people (sometimes even myself) like to think that they matter in life, and as you say alone like that you will realize that you are very insignificant, great thoughts

Stairman, there is a lot to do in the winter. Chop and haul wood, snow to shovel, etc., I don't get cabin fever. A lot of days I go snowshoeing. There's lots to do!! :)

Or you could do what I do and just practice in your backyard.

Start with sustainable gardening. My first year was a disaster, and I bet the large majority of people with a pipe dream that drop anything for Alaska will have a similar experience their first year(s?)

Most people get at least 2 weeks vacation each year. Plan a scenario and then take that time to practice it out. Find out how much work it really is to cut enough wood to keep you warm. If you have a fireplace this can be a practical exercise that you put to good use in the winter.

Imagine ways to supplement your diet, lifestyle, comfort, etc. and research it. Many cities don't have laws barring certain food stock animals that you can raise, such as chickens and rabbits. Mine bars chickens, but allows rabbits (wierd I know).

My view is that you should take a minimum of 5 years to prepare yourself with practice and knowledge. Once you are out 5 years you should have a good idea of what you don't know, and whether or not you could really make it.

The 5 year assessment is a good one. Harvesting goes on throughout the year and when you understand that rhythm it’s hard to understand how a person would go without. Right now I’m busy picking about 30 lbs. of fiddleheads and cutting hardwood. The fiddleheads are the fun part.

You brought up a good point that I didn't mention in my post when you talked about understanding the "rhythm". That is one specificity that my approach does not correctly handle. The Alaska rhythm is most definitely different from the Midwest rhythm.

With that in mind, though, we can still prepare and practice. That is also why I think a minimum of 5 years is necessary. There is a vast amount of detail that needs to be tracked down, researched, practiced, and understood. Otherwise I think you would just become a danger to yourself/family and an IMMENSE burden on your neighbors who probably won't appreciate your lack of preparedness.

This is the best thread yet. We all live in a fanasty life. I have because of my former job live in the woods of tennessee for several weeks at a time. Was able to do some of the wild life experence. Most people on this site need to go back to the TV and injoy it there

Luckyish kinda' reminds me of a secretary a temp agency once sent over to my office.

She was typing the first piece of dictation I had given her, a motion that began with the words, "Now comes the Defendant, John Smith, in the above-captioned matter, ...... "

After reading the first sentence I had dictated, she came into my office and urged me to re-write the sentence because of its "extremely poor grammar."

I tried to explain to her that the sentence was common legalese, a "language" which often barely resembled English. Nonetheless, she insisted that I was WRONG, and she knew better than me because she had just completed a one year secretarial course. She refused to type what I had dictated. After all, SHE was an expert, just like Luckyish.

She lasted less than an hour, probably about as long as Luckyish would, IMHO. :sneaky2:

I did'nt mean to bash members, I have always thought I wanted to experience
the samethings that alot of members do, I just knew that this was for me. I have been to Alaska,recently, been to the mountains of the west and saw enough on TV to realize I maybe was born 200 years to late to enjoy a dream.
I also realize that I have lived a lot longer than the ole mountain men of the
ppast. I can still dream about it, and not sweat or get cold.

A while back, I was in the supermarket and a kid was stomping down the aisle screaming at the top of his lungs. I looked at him, and then I looked at his mother. She just smiled and said, "He's just looking for attention."
