I posted on a thread about me, and it was suggested I post here and introduce myself.
I am amy McClish, but I was Amy Headrick, a lost lawyer up in Alaska almost 10 years ago. I was in the woods for 12 days before two miners found me. No skills, no training no equipment. I had instincts, good luck and lack of any panic.

Wow. Thanks for pitching in! There is a family here in NM who have started a foundation to help families of missing adults. Their son died at Wolf Creek ski area a little over a year ago.
To those who think wilderness survival is an extreme sport, they are nuts. It is not a game, nor should it be. It should not be a television event, real or fake. I hate the show survivor, and I hate that they make it look like a game. It is life and death. Normally, it is death. I hate that search and rescue is not performed very well, but I love the people who do it.

Not what I meant. Sorry that sounded so harsh. I meant by the police. When I didn't come home, the Anchorage PD wouldn't file a missing persons report for 3 days. Not a crime to be a missing adult and all. Thank goodness for the troopers taking it seriously.

welcome to the forum, I was lost in the woods for 3 days one time years ago, what you said is right, they wont budge for 3 days, if you are gone longer than that then they will look for you.

04-30-2009, 03:02 PM
Yep, exactly. However, those 3 days are completely wasted. I think a lot of people would survive events if the authorities acted faster. In my case, they did actually start before the 3 days were up. One of the partners at my law firm had connections in the state troopers office and got things going. However, after 3 days, they pretty much abandoned the search. Officially. There were lots of people, hopeak included, who looked for me. My family kept it alive.
And lots of supposed witnesses came forward. I was sighted all over the state. I have copies of the police reports and their notes. Crazy stuff.

This may not have applied in your case, but this points to why most here preach about notifying somebody responsible exactly when you will be back with a deadline that they should notify somebody if you are past due. That may have all happened. If it did and nobody took action that is wrong. But this is your introduction and welcome thread - conversation for another time I suppose.

I'm really impressed that you bothered to come on here and share your story with us. I don't know you other than what you've posted here but you seem to have a clear head on your shoulders. One of the things we talk about on the forum, mostly to the younger and less experienced folks, is that the best tool you can take to the wilderness is your brain. That and the need to control your thoughts and not panic. I think you've supported those concepts very well. Your actions prove that given the right circumstances, environment and luck you can survive by keeping a cool head.

I was in the hospital for 3 days, but my overall condition was pretty good. The worst were all the cuts on my lower body due to my naked bushwhacking. I could have gotten out after a day, probably. my temp was good, bp good, etc. They still performed all the tests. You know what they gave me to eat first thing? A turkey sanwhich. On a LARGE roll. Nothing like having limited water for 12 days and being given a sandwich. I guess it was better than the nutrigrain bar the rescuers gave me!
Yes, I did pass over hungry. Actually, I never really thought that much about food. Except blueberries. I really wanted some blueberries. One day I craved a pizza, and one day I craved butterscotch, but that was it. I had actually been anorexic in high school, so I was pretty sure I could live without food for a while.

Hmm, in retrospect what would I do differntly? Hard to really say, cuz I survived. I would probably have been more careful around the brush and with the slate cliff I slid down to minimize the cuts. Thing is, I didn't really notice how cut up I was until I got to the hospital. I would also have started drinking water sooner. It took me a while to realize I was dehydrating. I sucked some rain off leaves in the beginning, but didn't drink the river water or runoff water. Eventually I started drinking water from the runoff. OH, and I wouldn't have lost the sapphire and diamond ring my grandmother gave me.
You know, once you are in that situation, it is hard to know what you would do. Even for those of you with training, with preparedness, it is hard to know how you would react. I get a lot of people telling me they would die. Why? Why would a person give up? Why not just keep breathing and living, hoping for the best outcome?
Oh, and I would have ditched the cotton clothing even earlier.

I missed the part where you left your car, why did you do that? Wouldn't that have been the best place to stay? Do you wear different clothing now when you go hiking? Any type of bag of things for emergencies? Do you see where I'm going with this. If I ask too many questions just tell me to shut up, I'm married, I can take it!:innocent::sneaky2::cool2:

Ask away, I don't mind at all.
I left my car prior to getting lost. I slept in it one night, and the next morning started walking toward the main road. Some tourists from Minnesota gave me a ride to the main road, but were heading south. I started walking toward Anchorage, but couldn't find another ride or a state trooper. I made it about 5 miles, and decided it would be best to go back to the car. The way I got lost was by taking what I thought was a shortcut to the car. Stupid, really, but hey, I wasn't thinking that clearly in the moment. I was way too tired.
If I plan on going hiking, I try to normally wear non cotten clothing. Although here in NM, rain isn't that much of a problem. My clothes were a problem then, because I hadn't planned on being outdoors.
I typically carry water with me. You know the movie cast away? At the end, when he takes the package back to the lady in Texas, they show a shot of his front seat with all kinds of water bottles. That's me. Other than that, believe it or not, I don't carry a lot. I do have a car cell phone charger now. That was part of the problem.
If I go for any extended hikes, I take a few extra things. Extra socks, a jacket, etc. I have grown up a little and have 3 small kids now, so going out doesn't happen as much. I try to learn a lot about the area where I'll be.
The best thing you can have with you, and I think Rick said it early, or maybe you Sarge, is your wits and your brain. I had also been studying bears, due to hiking, so I sort of thought like a bear while I was out there. It might not make sense, but it seemed to help.
We have another saying on the forum. It's Crash's but I steal it all the time. "If it works for you, then it works for me." If thinking like a bear kept you alive then who am I to say it's silly?
Sourdough
04-30-2009, 08:21 PM
Amy, this may sound strange, but were you fearful of grizzly bears, black bears, wolves..??? How did you sleep at night, did you sleep the first nights....? the nights are very short that time of year, Did you nap during the day....????
amy headrick
04-30-2009, 08:22 PM
Yeah. It may not have helped, but it seemed to at the time. Each time I got cold and wanted to try to sleep (that was by far the scariest part), I thought, what would a bear use? Probably stupid to think a bear would build itself a leaf blanket, but it made sense at the time.
I entertained myself with stupid jokes. Want to hear one? You know why a llama spits? Because he's thirsty.
Then there was the day I couldn't stop speaking like Dr. Suess. Anything to keep me occupied.

Wayne Fears book about panic, & using your wits! The 1st mistake that I see that you made was leaving your car. It's a shelter from the elements & being on a road will be spotted a lot easier. Sarge, not leaving my car would have avoided the whole thing, yes. Problem was, I had no clue how I would get back to Anchorage from the Hope cutoff. I had no idea if people lived down that way or not (do now), so I figured the Seward Hwy would be a better choice. I got a ride so fast from the Minnesotans, that I figured it would be a piece of cake. But, when it didn't work, yes, I figured the car was the best place for me, which is why I headed back!

I didn't know any of that. I turned down the cutoff because I saw the little gas sign. I didn't know the station was closed, and I ran out of gas before I got there, anyway. I probably should have started walking toward Hope, instead of back the highway.

You are kind. And when I realized I was lost, that is pretty much what I did. I had a few words with God when it started raining. I mean it was my fault I got lost, but heck, the rain was unecessary! I napped quickly and when I woke, I sat for a long while, thought about what to do, watched an artic ground squirrel play (little guy seemed more amused by me), and then tried to make whatever plan I could.

That's where I moved from Amy. I lived both in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. Use to sell Real Estate while there. You've got to love the Balloon Feista and the food. Sandias are beautiful also.

I died once and wound up in Hell. The devil told me I would have to spend the rest of my life making love with Christie Brinkley.
I said, "Now let me get this straight. I HAVE to make love to Christie Brinkley for eternity? She's some kind of hell."
The Devil said, "You don't understand. She isn't your Hell. You are hers."
Figures.

Sarge, I'm getting the feeling you are the resident match maker. . . .Ken used to look for women for Hopeak, but he's tied up in court cases being a lawyer & all...besides, he's running Hopeak for Prez in 2012! So someone's got to take the job. See, most of us here are already married, yet Hopeak is single. Why should he not have to suffer...uh...I mean...be blessed like the rest of us? Okay, it's a toss-up on Rick's avatar & Crash's 2nd one, strangely enough, I find myself drawn to that person in the photo for some reason; if only he has a Twinkie suit....:blushing::innocent::sneaky2::cool2:

Nice of you to step for the silly lawyer. Why is he still lawyering? Heck, that was one of my revelations in the woods. . .
Anyway. . .I know this thread has taken a turn from my general introduction, but I did want to say thank you to all of you for welcoming me here and letting me hang out with you. It has been almost 10 years, and most "normal" people don't want to hear too much about what happened to me, are too freaked out by it, or just don't get it. It is nice to have a group who actually likes this stuff. So, again, thank you.

NOPE, No need for a door......... by late fall or early winter the Deluxe Outhouse will become a Standby Generator building, and the building will have been moved, and the hole filled. The septic system is in and the water well is in, by Aug 15th the water line and foundation will be done, for a building.
