So... If you had to survive in the wilderness for one night in temperatures of 30 degrees (talking farenheit here) and you could only bring 7 objects, and please be rational i.e. no "I would bring a mansion, ha ha :online2long: ".

My question is... what would you bring?

Mine:

Hatchet (for firewood)
Lighters/matches
Sleeping bag + wool blanket (you can count this as one if you're wondering)
a dog (having someonething living and loyal with you is both comforting and toasty warm)
RICE!!!! - it lasts forever
cooking pan

Do you see any flaws.... please elaborate.

I can't answer your question ,within those constraints, honestly. I'd never Just have seven items. I have more than that in my pockets right now. I'd trade the dog for a good knife tho. 30 ain't that cold with a fire and a sleeping bag/wool blanket.

uhhhh if I am only spending one night, why would it matter if rice lasts forever?

Rick
04-23-2009, 05:43 AM
Is it raining or snowing? A wet 30 degrees is a whole other ball game than a dry 30 degrees. Is it windy? Same thing. You have to be more finite on your scenario. You've left too many variables. If it's raining I'd probably have a tarp or tent as one of my items and I'd change the matches to flint and steel or lighter or something more suited to wet conditions.

For just one night, I don't need the dog, don't need the rice and don't need the pan. As Tennecedar said, I have more than that I always carry in my pocket.

Yes I do. As others have said, you left out information that may help us provide a more meaningful answer. Here's a little check list that may help you in the future. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5477 But as to your list - for one night the last 3 items would not be on my list. Water - water container - bivy or tent would be.

I am not very experienced, But if it were one night in thirty degrees Dry weather I would bring:
sleeping bag ( at most a 15 degree bag.)
Flint and steel (more reliable than a lighter or matches)
homemade tinder ( in case I cant find any.)
tarp or space blanket (block wind and rain and damp ground.)
knife ( because you always need a knife)
full water carrying device ( water bottle, canteen or preferably something to boil in.)
either fodd, snare wire, or fishing supplies ( I cant decide)
I knd of went in order by priorities (knife should be first) but other than that I went shelter/fire, water, food.

Do you see any flaws.... please elaborate. This was flawed from the very beginning. It shows me that you haven't studied much about being in the outdoors. Why would an experienced outdoors person limit themselves to just 7 items? They wouldn't! My small survival kit that I always carry has more items than that! I would add to that if I felt that there was any chance at all of me having to spend the night in the woods. contents would vary due to locale, season, weather, etc. The hatchet only works if you're in an area where you are allowed campfires & my knife can chop wood just as easy & still be used for other things.

Anybody who's been out in the wilds starts building their "nessesities" from the skin out! Forget the dog if you're in certain areas where they're restricted or it's bear country! Otherwise an excellent source of emergency food in case you run out of rice. :cool2:

1 snow mobile siut;

lol, I DID! ha ha, I could have sworn I counted seven... I even counted twice.
:online2long:... wierd.

to answer other questions and make more sense:

1. I'm talking "as if", kind of like a what-if game... so when I say seven Items that's the whole point; this is a challenge... like a survivor game?

2. The 30 degrees is a dry thirty degrees, and the ground is covered in frozen snow... the wind? Well it's a little windy but not too bad, and it fluctuates, sometimes there's no wind sometimes there's a bit more.

3. I didn't put water down because the ground is covered in snow and you could melt it.

4. I've spent plenty of time out doors but the "outdoors" is different everywhere and it depends on where you are.

lol... ALL you guys did was point out flaws but no one answered the question...

a means of resting or sleeping in a heated space is probably the most benefitial and useful tool in winter. a tarp and a snow suit to put on aver adequet clothing, backed up by an oil fire keeps you inside of your shelter, oil fire is smoke free compact (Never wood). 7 items is enough if those items block wind, cold, and keep you in a shelter for the nite, trips to get more wood poen your shelter to the cold taking away your effort.
burn oil under a stone and use it like a heater. all you carry is the oil and wick.

Quite a few people answered you question. No offense, but I didn't answer the question because I'm kind of in the camp that says this scenario is not really plausible. If you look, I haven't answered any of the previous "If you could take only x amount of items for x situation..." questions either. How can I answer it? Unless you say "there is a pile in front of you containing x,y,z. You have x situation ahead of you. What do you take?"

Then my answers are going to be;

dogs
fully stocked Vehicle
fully stocked gun cabinet
fully stocked pantry
fully stocked liquor cabinet
family
And a Uekele.

What is 30F in celsius anyway? Well, for a cold winter night:
1. An army issue guerilla tent.
2. Wood burning stove for the tent.
3. Army issue field shovel.(to remove snow from the tent site and digging rocks off the ground to place around the stove so that they gather the heat and radiate it when I sleep.)
4. A leuku
5. Copper coffee pan filled with cigarettes.(you could make food in it too, but for one day...)
6. Coffee
7. Firemaking kit

That for one day (24h in cold winter enviroment.)

All we did was try to narrow down the scenario. If you have that much experience then you should know there is a lot of difference between wet, dry, windy or calm or any combination.

Now that you've define the scenario, folks will be better able to answer you.

1. Knife
2. Tent
3. Sleeping bag
4. Ground pad
4. Flint and steel
6. Metal canteen cup
7. Backpack to carry everything

Running, I have a few questions.........You claim you are 19 years old and 5'-4" are you a short Male? or are you Female?

In the about ME section you have stated that you are a student, and yet under "BIOGRAPHY" which as a student you should know what that word means. However You have under "BIOGRAPHY" brown hair, brown eyes, 5'-4" tall, Caucasian.

You also state rather Proudly that you are a "TRUE ALASKAN".......what is a "TRUE" Alaskan. Is it someone who was born in Alaska.....?

You claim lots of Alaska wilderness experience, yet you seem to have gaping holes in your wilderness skill set.

My advise is that you came on way to strong in your introduction, and over played your hand.

That said, I applaud your dream, your vision, your quest to spend long periods alone in the Alaska wilderness. I suggest that you get honest with yourself about assessing your skill set, then pick one or two skills to work on. The wilderness is a Master teacher to those who listen.

All I need is the will to make it, and I will make it. How do I know, because of "Boots in The Field". I already did it with a client, 31* above, 45 MPH wind, driving rain and snow, soaking wet, stuck in an Alder thicket on a mountain side, and sitting in rivulets of ice water, in Oct. On the Alaska Peninsula, on the Dog Salmon River. You have to want to be alive in the morning. Note: it was the longest night of my life.

And I certainly didn't so please don't color everyone with the same crayon. I simply asked you to further define your scenario.

This is something that happens from time to time on here. Probably just the mechanics of how a forum works. Someone comes on and asks for information and then doesn't like the answer or the way the answer is worded. Being mentally tough and a bit thick skinned are both attributes in surviving no matter where you are or what the situation is.

You've done some things I don't care to do. I'd never work on a fishing boat. Just too tough for me. I don't want to be stranded in Alaska either. I've been to AK and love the place but wouldn't want to be stranded there...anywhere...well, a bar in Anchorage maybe.

If you want to stay, stay. If you want to leave, leave. That's up to you. Either way, good luck on whatever it is you seek. Life is only sh**ty if you choose to look at it that way. You can change the ground under your feet but never the sky over your head. You attitude, worries, morals and ideas will travel with you no matter where you go.

I don't SUGAR COAT my words either............YOU are "STUPID" and a "FOOL". If you even had to ask how to do it, you lacked the skill to do it. You are stupid and a Fool if you do not heed advise from someone who has been in Alaska wilderness for more than TWICE as long as you have been alive. It sounds like you can just barely survive in a supportive Juneau, Alaska "AREA" city or village environment.

If you want to do something smart, get some counseling, you need to learn to live in the world you have, not the world you wish you had. When you have Mastered the urban environment and can survive there, then gradually get wilderness experience. I am a "OLD" Set-Netter from Cook Inlet, so I know commercial fishing is hard work, but it ain't wilderness lifestyle by a long shot. Good Luck with your life choices.

Heck, I wouldn't even anything. . .oh, been there done that 12 days. I would want water, fleece pants and top (no cotten), easy food (protein bar would suffice), matches, knife. . .probably be enough. A sleeping bag would be a great luxury, too.

Why would you want clothes?:blushing:

Because the worst part of the experience was the cold. If it is going to be 30 degrees, I'd like the clothes. Take it up to the fifties, and we can discuss the necessity of clothing. Especially if there are tarps anywhere to be found.
