Emergency Situation

Here’s another scenario that is a bit different than some of the others.

You are stopped at a traffic light. There are two vehicles stopped in front of you, and several stopped behind you. You are in your work truck. In addition to the work supplies and tools, you are carrying a small first aid kit, one dry chemical fire extinguisher and your daily personal carry items (cell phone, knife, flashlight, handgun…..what ever you have with you on a routine basis.)

You hear a loud noise from behind you, glance in your side view mirror just as you feel the impact from behind. You quickly assess that you are not seriously injured. Your door is difficult to open, but you are able to open it. You are in vehicle four. As you do, you see people running toward you asking if you are OK. Upon signaling that you are, you look back to see several vehicles piled up behind you and you smell the strong odor of gasoline. Behind you are three smashed vehicles along with yours and the one in front of you. There is an unconscious man in vehicle two. Gasoline is pouring from the ruptured fuel tank of vehicle two. Vehicle one – that caused the accident has a hysterical woman in it along with three screaming toddlers. Vehicle three has two passengers, both injured but ambulatory. In vehicle five the driver is complaining of severe neck and back pain and numbness in his legs. The passenger is not injured.

What do you do?

Step One: Neutralize the "Hysterical" Women. She is no help, and a distraction......:):):) Do it in a nice way.:innocent: Could try out your new taser and see if it works.

I'm assuming I'm well enough to assist. Organize. I'm really good at organizing and barking orders. You, yeah you. Help that lady and those kids. You two see if you can help him.

I'd try to start at the vehicle leaking fuel and work my way away from that vehicle removing those that could be removed and stabilizing the guy that appears to have a neck injury.

Post person or persons to warn on coming traffic ( making scene as safe as possible).
Make sure it is called in.
Post a fire watch with all available fire extinguishers at gas leak.
Assess toddlers and remove them in their seats with mom to safe location (I have a soft spot for kids)
Assess occupant of vehicle two (gas leaker) and move victim (consistent with injuries) He is in most immediate danger.
Vehicle three have them move (with appropriate assistance) to same location as kids.
Vehicle 5, farthest from immediate danger (gas leak) leave in place with someone watching him.
Then standby for professional assistance.

Fast answer: I will assume that the leaking gasoline poses a threat for both fire and explosion. This factor completely changes the action to be taken.

Have someone call 911.

Have everyone turn off any running vehicles and quickly move a safe distance away.

Have others remove unconscious man IMMEDIATELY as a risk of fire/explosion exists.

Me and others: Improvise a half-board and full-board backboard for man with spinal injuries and improvise a cervical collar as well. Apply cervical collar, strap man to half board, with seat as far back as possible, slide him onto the full board, and remove him from immediate area. Seatbelts may be cut and used as straps.*

* I have been trained to do this and have trained first responders as well. If you don't have training for this, leave man in last vehicle in place with half board and move only if gasoline ignites.

* The rear seat of a vehicle is easily removed and will suffice as a full board once a half-board is in place.

Here’s what I did. Grabbed my fire extinguisher and headed to the vehicle with the unconscious man. The fuel tank was ruptured. A couple of people rushed to the vehicle that caused it all. The driver got out and was screaming about her kids. There was plenty of help there. Myself and five others were trying to get one of the door open to the vehicle with the unconscious man – the motor was racing. I grabbed the drive shaft of the vehicle (lying on the road) and broke the passenger side window, climbed in and turned off the motor. Six of us grabbed whatever tools we could to try and get one of the doors open. We bent down the window frames, broke several tools (I bent a tire iron about 90 degrees and didn’t even realize it). One guy wanted to pull the man through the window because of the gasoline everywhere. I would not let him do it. There was a lot of blood on the guy and did not want to move him unless there was more risk of fire (all six of us are standing in gasoline, and I’m half in the vehicle trying to make sure he is stable. Fire and rescue got there pretty quick and we all backed off. They brought in members of the county EOC as well. All in all there were six fire trucks, five ambulances, and about twenty other rescue and law enforcement vehicles there. After the injured had been transported I was interviewed by officials. The evening news just aired a story about it. No update on the man that was most seriously injured – still in critical condition. You just never know when you are going to be placed in a situation where you have to do something.

The guy that was in critical condition had an air compressor int the back of the vehicle. It appears (not sure) that his head injury was caused as the compressor was thrown forward. This is something that many people don't think about. I learned very quickly in the Navy about missile hazards (flying objects) caused by large angles or sudden stops. It is important to remember this in your vehicle as well. Please make sure that any loads you are transporting are secured.

that was horrific! just one spark or a screaming hot exaust pipe and there would have been toast. and as for what i would do?I would call 911 while geting people away from the gas spill, then I would asses the possibility of rescueing the critticly injured, if that wasnt possible, i would attemp to stableize thier situation by treating them for shock,control any blood loss, and find out about any other injuries(visual inspection).By that time the EMS should be to relieve me with professional medical and rescue procedures.

Nice job, Crash. Utility folks are drilled on missile hazards as well. You might as well stick you head in a blender if you let things lay loose inside you car. If you are involved in a roll over accident your greatest injuries will probably be from the loose items inside the car striking you (assuming you are belted in).

And while we're on the subject, I see tons of folks, mostly women, riding around in the passenger seat with their feet on the dash. Take a moment and think about what is going to happen if you are in a frontal crash.

1. You hips will try to slide under the seat belt.
2. Your head and torso will try to fly over the selt belt.
3. While that is happening, the air bag will force your feet past your head snapping your spine.

In those pictures I only included the last three vehicles. Mine has signage and phone number platered all over it. I should find out this week if it will be repaired or totaled - about $10,000 damage was the quick estimate. Seems a bit high, but we'll see.

Ken, I couldn't add anything to your post. You said the the same thing I would have. Crash, great job. I worked over 400 wrecks in ten years. Every one was unique. You did more than could have been asked of you. Most of all you kept a level head.

Actually pretty good. As soon as I heard it I pressed as hard as I could against the steering wheel, keeping my arms slightly bent. Don't know if that was right or wrong, but it seems to have helped. A while ago I was in a similar accident and did not have a chance to do anything. Large seatbelt bruise that time. The paramedics wanted to check me out, and everything was fine. So far, so good. Took a couple of Advil as a precaution.

A habit that I've developed is to give myself a car length distant between vehicles when I come to a stop. It offers two things. 1. If someone wants to block you in for whatever reason then you have an option to take a curb or the next lane. If you are pulled up too close you have no where to go. 2. If you see a vehicle approaching that you know can't stop in time it also gives you the option of scooting.

Years ago there was road construction going on near my home and a line of traffic had stopped for a flagman. A semi can along and never slowed down. The guy in the last car had left himself room, saw the truck coming, and floored the car into a persons yard. The truck plowed through the remaining cars killing 3 (if I remember correctly) including the truck driver. I talked to the driver of the last car some time later and he was telling me he always leaves himself room just for that reason.

Fast forward a couple of years. I was the last car stopped behind a flat bed truck under a viaduct of all places. I had my car length gap but still no where to go when I saw a Buick due a nose dip at about 40 MPH. I knew she wasn't going to stop. She moved me but had I been pulled up behind the flatbed the bed would have gone through the windshield at head high.

Always leave yourself an out especially if you are stopped on a highway. It just might save your life or keeping you from being slammed into the vehicle in front of you.

My father was in an accident similar to that. He was rear-ended and he hit the car in front of him. His insurance had to pay for the vehicle in front of him. I thought that was a little unfair since the one who hit him cased the whole thing. Glad you are ok crash. Any of the pesticides leak out anywhere? That would be a mess to clean up.

No leaks. I keep all of the containers of pesticides int plastic bins to help prevent leakage. Just heard a little while ago that they are totaling my truck. Seems that the initial $10,000 guess was low.

I liked that one just fine. It's one of those unplanned expenses. Still don't know too much about other insurance involved. We'll see.

Gotta love the insurance companies. Gladly take your money month after month but if the time comes you need it, it's like pulling teeth and they try every way in the book to screw you. Just my opinion of course.

Nobody's trying to stick it to me. My insurance is covering it except for the deductible. It was a 2005 with 60,000 miles on it. I planned on getting at least 250,000 miles out of it. Once things are sorted out the person that caused the accident will have their insurance company "gone after" by the other victims. The problem is that when there are five vehicles involved the minimum required insurance (I don't know if that is what she has yet) runs out before all people are covered. If the state required higher levels of insurance then we would hear how the government and the insurance companies are screwing us.....kind of like now.
